For those voting yes, I'd be curious to know why.

Is it part of a "bundle" with TV and internet, and they basically throw it in for free?

We have VOIP...at one point had spotty cell reception in the house. But its not so bad any more.

Wife seems to like the security blanket of having a home phone...but I really don't use it much.

Most of the time when it rings its some solicitation or telemarketing or political BS anyway so we don't answer unless its a number we know.

I have a 12 year old and a 9 year old. I don't feel like paying for two more cell phones, but at the same time I don't want their friends pestering the #### out of me by calling my cell to talk to them.

Yeah we barely use ours. As a matter of fact i never pick it up or even listen to the messages. Have a full inbox right now.

Sure. Fairly worthless, but included in the cable package.

Does serve a small purpose for my daughter to occasionally call her friends with it and not bug me to use my phone, or if we leave her home alone to run to the store or whatever she can all us, and we can call her. Or she can call 911 when the scary burglar breaks in

Got a Triple Play buy-back deal from Verizon FIOS. I told them that I didn't need a home phone, but the offer they presented was actually cheaper than any cable/internet only package that they had at the time. So, we have the service and technically have a home telephone number, but don't have a home phone hooked up.

I voted No.

I have a phone on my desk. It's VOIP, used strictly for business. Haven't had a traditional land line in probably 15 years.

We have a Verizon "house" phone for our three kids. Uses the same cell service as our cell phones, and is just an add on to our Verizon bill. It's really only there for an emergency. Wouldn't even miss it if it was gone (until an emergency arises). They prefer facetime when talking to their friends.

Haven't had a land line for around 10 years now. Reminds me that our landline service use to be Sprint, and they really sucked. Was really happy to say goodbye to them when we did. I think local service in our area was taken over by CenturyLink. Never had the pleasure of being a customer of theirs.

Had one while wife was teleworking. Once work took that away, I cancelled the phone. With alarm systems running just fine using cell signals, I have no need for one any longer.

I have VoIP. Makes it easy for both my wife and I to be on the phone at the same time so we can talk to family together.

Yes and I hate the cell phone ringing every hour with some dumb#### trying to sell me something so I give out the home number and not the cell number. Cell is only for people I know.

Even then, I still say, 'who the #### is calling me' when it rings.

We don't have one but i've been looking for one. Kids are 4 and 2.....if there's an emergency i want them to be able to dial 911 and have the dispatch immediately know the location without the kids trying to convey that info. Currently we have a spare cell phone that stays at the house in case of emergency.

Just switched over to MagicJack this week. We have cell phones but they are rarely used. We just use the simple Go Phone types.

Last time I had a land line was the late 90s

ETA: Have a microcell and perfect cell reception all around the house

Of course. That is the number I give out. Also if power goes out in a huge emergency I can still make a call and not worry about cell towers

If you are using an iphone or android phones magicjack has an app that allows you to use your cell phone to make calls over wifi. Just discovered this a few days ago when our MJ power supply crapped out. This could also be handy for traveling or any time you are away from your home. Good way to save cell minutes.

That is cool, thanks! We only have simple cell phones though, just Go Phone disposable types, not a smart phone.

Yes, kids.

As an aside, I also have a bundle. We called to try to cancel our landline as the kids are about old enough to have their own cell phones as part of family plan and we were told it would be an extra $5/month to cancel, as the package we have includes home phone, and they don't offer an internet/cable only deal at lower pricing :loco:

We have an Ooma that uses VoIP over our Internet connection, so I voted yes. Our cell phone coverage is ok in the house, but I prefer the quality of the landline, both the volume and clarity. Plus the kids can use it to call friends or 911 in an emergency, they don't have cell phones yet.

No, but we do have a secondary Google Voice number that rings both of our cell phones (and my office) that we use as the "Home Phone" when filling out contact info for school, and the kids doctors and stuff like that.

I had one as part of my internet/TV package.

The only people that would ever call it were telemarketers so I had it disconnected.

yes
Yes, part of a bundle. and I have a wife that never answers her cell or thinks about it. If it wasn't practically free with the wireless and tv I'd have no need for it. The joke amongst the kids and I is that you could be dying or in jail and she wouldn't answer her cell.

You can pick up some cheap android phones on Ebay and swap out your Go Phone sim. Anything with wifi capability would work.

I'n not giving up my 212, guy. Old school Manhattanite.

If it rings, it's either a grandparent or one of the kids doctors. Or the doorman. Might get 15 calls in a busy month.

Yes. Terrible cell reception in my house.

These. And actually leave it unplugged most of the time due to the last part.

We have one, but i am more convinced I don't need it (yes, I realize I should have come to that conclusion years ago). For a long time we've had it because I didn't want to have to put down my cell phone number on application forms, registrations, etc, all those forms they ask for a phone number. However, more and more often lately I'll have someone try to reach me on the home phone for something. I'll look at caller ID and see there was someone who would be calling me so I check voice mail. I then have to listen to approximately 20 voice mails for solicitations, 3 urgent messages for my wife, 2 kids calling one of my kids, and then finally get to my message. It doesn't really seem to offer the efficiency it used to of "if they are calling the home phone I know I can ignore it."

when you say swap out my go phone sim, does that mean all the money on the go phone will transfer over to the new phone? (I think I have over $300 dollars on go phone since I almost never use it but we have to add $100 a year to keep the phone active for emergencies).

We have one, but it is VOIP so perhaps not a "land-line" as such. I'm an old codger and don't like carrying my phone around with me when I'm at home. I put it on a shelf just inside the door when I get home, and will usually go all evening or an entire weekend without looking at it. Pisses off my friends.

Yes, but only because my wife doesn't want to get rid of it for some reason. I only answer if its my parents calling. Trying to get them to only call my cell. Guess its pretty hard to re-program speed dial #1.

You guys know that the same way you don't answer every call that comes to your home phone, you have the same option with your cell, right?

I don't have one. I got rid of it when I streamlined a few month ago, getting rid of cable TV and the land line while increasing my internet speed and saving 150 bucks a month.

I felt a bit of nostalgic pain as the number was my parents number for close to 30 years, and while I am pretty sure I was able to contact everyone they knew about their passing, I wonder if anyone is still trying to call that number as the only way to reach my parents. I didn't think to have it transferred to another number before getting rid of it.

That is a number I haven't dialed in years, but will never forget what it is.
