Do You Keep an Emergency Bag? (1 Viewer)

Ok, on my way to getting things put together. I got a small first aid kit for my truck. I am going to buy one of the kits linked earlier (I think by fish) for my wife's car. (though I do have some questions about that kit) and I started getting the house kit ready to go. I got a $20 bag from Marshall's (a nice 24" sport duffle Eddie Bauer one of good quality) and went to Target and got some supplies. Still need to get a few more things for it though.

Thanks, this rounds off some things I can not get at Target and was either going to hit a Army/Navy surplus and/or look online for. Question- for food, which is more cost effective, an MRE or a food bar like on the survival goods link?
Always bet on the Army. Cockroaches and MRE's will survive, you might not but there will be a ready supply of food at any Army base. I'd be willing to bet there D rations out there from WWII that just as tasty as they were the day they were made.Colonel Logan had four requirements for the D ration Bar. The bar must:1. Weigh 4 ounces2. Be high in food energy value3. Be able to withstand high temperatures4. Taste "a little better than a boiled potato" :lmao:

Maybe an earthquake in someplace you typically would not expect to see one.... will awaken the goofballs that think an emergency bag is silly. Prob not. But still for those with any ounce of common sense you would think it was a slam dunk.

I guess listening to those crazy people that list reasons like this is just too out there. Or others like crazies, whackos, nutjobs, and looney toons!

Then there are also those other extreme people that want you to prepare like this guys and these ones over here.

72 Hours

Yea, I agree, investing a small amount of money and time to best help you and your family in a time of an emergency is just insane and only the most silly of people would do such things.

couple of flash bangs and 2 tasers, and a tranq gun. Figure if #### goes down I'm just gonna take a few trunks from :tinfoilhat: s like Icon who you know will be well stocked.

This is very important. 'Eddie Bauer' gear is a MUST when preparing for the apocalypse...

 Only bag that Marshall's had that would fit the size I needed and at a good price.

Emergency bag for what? Running from the law? Nuclear war? Environmental challenge? Quick vacation? Leaving your significant other?

Answer: Duct tape.
LOL--seeing the thread title my first thought was bladder misfunction! :lmao: As always--duct tape's the answer.

All the haters in here will be the first whiners when the gov't doesn't come rescue them from the big bad storms that knocked out their power.

Good point. Emergency bags must have saved thousands of lives during yesterdays disaster.

You are not this much of a moron. The point is that disasters happen and they do so without warning or expectation. Who would have expected an earthquake in Virginia? I am pretty confident most of the people that live there never would have. Now, what if that was a 7.8 instead of a 5.8? The first responders and infrastructure would have been devastated. Many people would be without access to the basics of life and medical care for days. Why do you ignore FEMA, pretty much all the states emergency agencies, the Red Cross, and common sense?

If everyone in New Orleans had put together a bag- how many lives would have been saved? How much suffering would have been avoided? It is just mind boggling the fools that not only refuse to take any steps to be prepared but mock those who do.

Big difference between preparing an emergency bag in N'Orleans with Katrina on the way and preparing a bag living in the Chicago suburbs. I'll take the $2-300 you're spending and invest it in a mutual fund instead. We'll compare notes in 2040.

I never thought of you as an idiot but this thread is proving to me otherwise.

3 Cases of MRE's. 6 Blankets. 30 Gallons of water. Radio. Flashlights. Lots of batteries. Lighters. Ammo. Rolls of plastic. Medic Trauma Bag. Duct Tape. $500 in cash. some other stuff.... but yeah. I've got a "Trunk" in the corner of a storage room.
Military "Meals Ready to Eat"Essentially a full 1500ish calories day's worth of food. Each case has 12 packs. Every pack a different meal. They include everything from the entree/sides to snacks (peanut butter / crackers... M&M's...etc)... to silverware, napkins, heating element for cooking....even breath mints.

Each case will feed 2 people (GF and I) for at least a week at a very healthy level and far longer in an emergency scenario. There are 24 different options so only 12 of the means would be redundant. The food itself is actually quite good all things considered too..... I've tested them while camping (4th case).... make for a pretty solid day's eating.
Looking to pack a bit of food up for a rainy day. These still a good option?

Actually saw a boxed set of 'food for a month' at Costco (I found it funny that they had it... I think the "Doomsday Preppers" show must bave increased sales for this type of stuff). I didn't really look at it too much because my wife shot me down before I even got to the box... at least until we buy a house... but it was about $120 or so. I think the month was for a family. Not sure what was in the box at all. But, if you don't care for the idea of MRE's then this might be a good option to get and then more easy to rotate when close to expiration.

O-kee do-kee.

I might put together something when I move to Florida, and we need to get a better ditch bag put together for the boat, but if the apocalypse happens, I'm just going to be toast, most likely. I'm fine with that.

An emergency bag is more about being prepared for a large scale emergency situation (earthquake, hurricane, tornado, floods, fires, terrorist attack, etc) where normal services are interrupted (both private and governmental) and you have the ability to be self-sufficient for a couple of days whether you need to move or stay put. If an apocalypse scenario happens- it is nearly impossible to really prepare for any eventuality. Many of these- most likely you will die anyways being the nature of an apocalyptical event. Even if you fully prepare with stockpiles of large amounts of food and so forth, the chances of successfully navigating an apocalyptical world for a long period are slim.

Enough Food/supplies for a good 2-3 weeks still only taking up 4sq ft in my guest bedroom closet. Was glad it was there a year ago when MS River hit historic flooding levels and took out tons of homes, roads, etc. I know that certain items were getting pretty hard to find around town... was kinda nice to not have to get out into the crowds during panic time.

Don't worry about it tGunz, remember, you are white and in a good neighborhood- the government will come with filet mignon, aspargus and garlic mashed potatoes delivered by white glove to your door in any emergency.

They were delicious. Then again, I suppose if I lived in a shoebox, then 4sq feet of closet space would be a lot tougher to part with for me too.

Interesting. I've never heard good things about MREs.

They'll surprise you actually. I cycle out older ones and use them out camping. Not bad at all. For a days worth of food that sits in a ziploc freezer bag sized pouch for eternity, it's actually very good.

My 3 bdrm, 3 bth townhouse has ~ 1600 sq ft. But yeah, even 4sq ft is too much to waste for me on the .000000000000000001% chance I'd ever need it.

After living through Loma Prieta, a 100+ inch string of blizzards, five cat 3 or higher hurricanes, 9/11 (not in the buildings), too many extended power outages to count, the Manhattan/NE blackout of '03, and a couple anthrax scares, I've concluded that there is only one necessity and that is Xanax. And that's only if the event is a bit tough to digest. Otherwise...meh. You either have time to grab what you need or you figure it out. We're resourceful creatures.

in icon's defense, i used to live in a shoebox, but I wanted to clarify that I'm not neglecting an emergency bag due to space these days. I don't have one b/c I think it's insane for 99% of the population to have one.

Living in the northeast, don't really need anything major- sure the occasional Nor'easter and power outages happen.. I keep non-perishable food and bottled water (and alcohol - lots and lots of alcohol) stocked normally, so I don;t worry about it much.. If I lived in hurricane or earthquake zones, I'd probably be more serious about a true emergency supply..
