I don't use the crock pot when I am away at work even though people slow cook with those. I would be paranoid all day that my place will set on fire.

Dryer- HELL NO. I dont even goto sleep with Dryer running. The other two, sure. Technically you should always shut the water on you washing machine when not in use. I doubt anyone does that though.
Who ever told you that it's a lie.  Your more likely to ruin the valve by constantly turning it on and off.  Than you are by having the hose break.

Yes I leave the house whenever I want because those choices are women's work.    She is going to be home of course so she can empty the dishwasher, and do the laundry while I go about my manly duties.

Man, there is nothing better than the crock pot cooking all day and walking into a house that smells like pot roast at 5:00.

Crock pot is safer than the others, and probably safer than other things you leave on all the time.

Exactly!!  One of major causes of house fires is dryers and built up lint (something like 2,900 fires a year are cause by this.) I never take that risk with my dryer.

As far as the washer, I know there is the paranoia of the water line breaking, but I do not leave it running because I don't want my clothes stuck in there all wet.

The dish washer I really don't care about.

We have smart appliances so I can view their status when I am out, so that also buys piece of mind, but I don't think my dryer would send me an update saying "I am on fire!!" Our home alarm system would, I guess.

If you know zero about the dryer vents then I suppose it could be dangerous.

However, some basic knowledge and maintenance there will knock those odds down about 99.9999999%

< 3K fires a year coming from something that every household in America uses at least once a week (and some use every day) has to be damn near infinitesimal odds. Especially if you perform basic maintenance.

I do basic maintenance on it, but why take a chance if it can be avoided? You can't claim "I HAVE to do my laundry while I am gone." I just dry my laundry while I am there and don't take a chance if gone and my wife and I have two teenage girls.

I mean I pay for homeowners insurance at a big chunk of $$ per year. I have filed one claim in 17 years--that claim amounted to $130K due to hail damage and over a month in a hotel for my family. Things happen....Ounce of prevention for things I can control is how I look at it.

You have a good recipe for this? I'm getting hungry!

I personally don't like my clothes sitting in the washer wet, or wrinkling in the dryer.. Can't even recall the last time I had to iron.. Dryer stops and clothes are out..
Same here. Also in case someone else wants to do a load your stuff isn't in their way.

They make medications for this.

My wife doesn't like my answer.

"Would you rather the house catch on fire while we are out or while we are at home?"
Am I weird for answering I would definitely rather be at home? I have an extinguisher and could put a dryer fire out in a minute. I'm pretty sure I'd prefer that over loosing everything.

I have no problem leaving any of them running. I have no problem with a crockpot or the oven on either. I will go to sleep or work with any running.

The toaster is plugged in. Anyone else rub the stick of butter on the toast vs using a knife? It annoys the wife, I tell her the knife gets crumbs on the butter too when you're doing several pieces for the family. We will often have 2 sticks open, one for toast one for everything else.

What annoys me is the wife leaving the TV on when she falls asleep. I always turn off the TV when I leave or go to sleep.

sometimes for the hell of it i will just start all three up and head out for a walk in your face iraq take that to the bank bromigos
Steven Wright likes to run his humidifier and dehumidifier at the same time,  just to let them fight it out.

No... No... No!!!!

We use to.. until one day the front panel on the dishwasher started sparking and smoking..

had we not been home at the time we would have lost everything..

None of those run unless we are home and awake..
This happened to friends of ours with their dishwasher ...and they weren't home.  Massive damage (mostly smoke) to their home that took months to repair.  So no, we'll never leave the house when the dishwasher is running.

Fair point.  i know what I would do, but I'm definitely not in charge regarding this issue.  The other day, I had three or four of my son's clothing items in the dryer, and left for the day with my wife home.  She called after she left the house an hour later realizing that the dryer was on, asking me to return home to turn the dryer off (10 minutes away).  I put my foot down on that one, as i told her that by the time i came home it would be off already.

My wife definitely has me unplug the toaster when going out for the whole day.
Dont ever let her see the flames inside your furnace.

Sure there is a chance the dishwasher could fry out when running, but aren't those probabilities ridiculously small?  To all those who shut these appliances off when not around, are you this risk averse in other areas of your life?  swimming in the ocean?  riding on a plane?  investing money?  Just curious if this unwillingness to risk appliance catastrophe is a general characteristic trait in your life.

What sort of dishwashers we talkin about here?  40 years old?  The cheapest walmart brand?

Yes to all.  If my house were to burn down while we weren't home it would be a blessing in disguise as all the crap my wife saves over the years would be gone.  I keep telling her that all these things she saves that are in totes under the house are just things the kids are going to throw away when we are dead.
