I see all kinds of tattoos and weird piercings on a pretty regular basis and don't think much of it. It's kind of a hipster thing I think.

Neck tattoos are a bit different though. I don't see too many of those on professional people.
My best paralegal has a neck tattoo. As professional a woman as you'll find. She's Puerto Rican, and I'm told it's more common in their culture.
That's racist!!
She is fast.

If they are a musician, drug dealer, or gangster sure. Otherwise they just look like they are trying too hard.

I agree with this. Tattoo dudes are the new posers.

It's also near the point where hot chicks that don't have lower back tattoos are more rare.

After the Hernandez fiasco I won't draft fantasy NFL players with blatant tattoos, so it would be hypocritical of me to take people in the general population with blatant tatoos seriously. Nothing personal, there are probably a few good players/people with tattoos that I am avoiding, but its part of my overall "avoid the busts" life strategy.

If they're in a creative field and are good at what they do- yes.

If they're in a non-creative field and good at what they do- maybe.

If they're in any field and not good at what they do- no.

There was this dude who had "Dirty Deeds" on the back of his neck. He was implicated in a murder in the area where I live. The story behind him was that he just got out of prison a few months before, was a hit man for the Aryan Brotherhood, and most likely did a job for them.

So yeah, I would take that dude very seriously.

I am not getting the :"If they are in a creative field" argument. Seems to me that in such fields this is actually conformist, and it is certainly derivative and banal. It is saying, "Hello, I am a walking cliché`". What could be less creative? It is people who do not have to wear a uniform putting one on permanently.

I do not care what people do with their bodies. They can tattoo or pierce anything they want. However, they are not going to get hired for many jobs due to their appearance.

I find neck tattoos goofy- the currency of "I don't give a ####, look at me" types of people.

But yes- they're part of an accepted uniform for creative types, so for me- they're less goofy there... and considering the work done, the personality I assign to it is more appropriate in those fields. If was interviewing financial advisers, and one of them showed up with a neck tat, I'd seriously doubt his judgement and wouldn't want him investing my money.

oh #### it.

really- if I knew somebody was good at their job... I don't give a crap what they had on their neck.

Any tatoo that's visibile while wearing business attire essentially moves the bearer into the unemployable arena IMO. I draw the conclusion that the person exercised terrible judgement.

and if s/he comes into the meeting with stunning background/resume/work-achievements?

Agreed. Some consider this unfair, but this opinion is going to be common for quite a while - I plead with my son (17) about the regret and potential consequences of tatoos.

I have one on the back of my neck. It only counts as "visible" sometimes. I try not to take myself too seriously so I voted "no".

Maybe if they were world class at something but most people I see have stunning resumes and almost none have visible tats. The issue is also that some clients don't want to deal with people with tats so it makes the decision even easier.

Oh

After some player got in a scrap with Kenyon Martin, Charles Barkley offered the sage advice that you never mess wiith a guy with a neck tattoo.

I'm thinking of getting one that looks like a bow tie. That way I get all the advantages of a bow tie without having to learn how to tie one.
