At this point, my wife and I usually watch shows through Netflix and DVR a few others. When they were first available, she asked to put the subtitles on as it was easier to follow along with some of the shows. I hated it at first but now have grown accustomed to using them and prefer them myself. We now watch most movies with them on as well.

I'm curious if we're in the minority or if others use them frequently as well.

 
Only subtitles I have ever used was for Snatch and they only had it as Pikey to English.

 
Watching Sons of Anarchy, we started using subtitles so we could understand Chibs and the Irish. Now I kinda like having them on for other shows. :oldfart:

 
Yes, and my wife hates it because she has picked up on the fact that I only ever do it while she is talking :unsure:

 
I normally don't, but was in the company of a friend who does and I may have picked up on a few things which I otherwise would have missed. I'm not sure whether reading the subtitles took away from the visual for me.

This is why I was against it at first but I don't think it does at all. The only thing it ever does is occasionally give away something that is said with a good delivery. But the benefit of not missing those little things outweighs that for me now.
 
Only when the wife and I are in bed and she's sleeping. Quite often it distracts from what is being shown (say on a Science channel show) but overall I can follow without any problems.

 
Started out doing so when I felt I was missing key dialogue, but I've gotten used to it and kind of prefer it these days. My husband hates it though, so I mostly use them when watching shows on my own.

 
My wife has a brain injury and, with that some central auditory processing issues, so I've grown accustomed to them. I like them.

This :thumbup: I get up early and have them on when everyone else is sleeping. Normally Mrs. DM asks me to shut them off. She and I were watching Masters and Commanders last night and after the first few lines, she asked me to put them back on. No, she doesn't know how to use that function. :mellow:
 
My grandpa was really hard of hearing, basically deaf (genetics combined with being an airplane radio office in WWII). So, when I was growing up we'd always have them on when he came over to watch a movie. The whole family got used to them being there and now everybody in my family watches everything but live TV with them on. I sometimes miss them when I'm watching a movie at the theater and can't quite understand a line.

Usually this is the case with me, although once in a while I watch something where I find it easier just to go with subtitles the whole way.I really don't find it distracting or annoying after the first few seconds.

we do on occasion. My great room isn't very good acoustically, tough to get the speakers to be as crystal clear as I think they should be...too many hard surfaces for sound to reflect off of. Plus, the kids bedroom opens up to the great room, so after bed time, I don't really have the luxury of cranking it up for dialogue...not until they are fully asleep, anyways.

 
Wait. If I come over to your house to watch tv you have subtitles on? I've never heard of anyone doing this.

Maybe I'm too young.

 
I do for movies. I started about a year ago I think. My daughters like them on for their movies and I just left it when I was watching. I was somewhat amazed at how many details in the dialogue I missed so I kept it.

It would have seemed really strange if someone suggested it before I started, but you get used to it over time.

Exactly. They also usually tell you the name of the song that's playing and the lyrics.
 
Watched a show a couple days ago with some friends that were over. They actually requested we turn them off.

Since I gladly obliged, I realized how used to them I became. I don't know if it's because of that or not, but there would be an occasional word I'd miss and it would bug the hell out of me.

 
Very rarely. I did it for the UK version of The Office. There are a lot of cultural references that I couldn't figure out what the hell they were saying. Occasionally, if I can't figure out something after rewinding, I'll turn it on to hear the line. I'll usually turn it off right away because it's too much of a distraction to me. Oh yeah, I'll do it sometimes on a rewatch of Game of Thrones because they throw out a lot of names and I like to look them up online for a little more backstory.

 
I like to use them occasionally for 2 reasons, I don't hear as well and I have a house full of kids. I don't use them sometimes when I should out of stubborn pride, but having the TV cranked so you can hear it in the next house is just as "old man" as turning subtitles on.

 
When my mother-in-law comes to visit, I turn it on so her husband can watch TV at night without keeping everyone awake with the volume.

Other than that, when I watch Doctor Who. Darn English/Scottish accents.

 
I'm feeling really old, because I would turn on the subtitles if only I could figure out how to do that.

I will do this when I am watching TV by myself, and if after replaying a line a couple times I can't get it.

Would be nice if you could program a key to do it on and off, instead of having to dig thru the several menus that it takes to get to the CC switch on FiOS.

 
I used them for Peaky Blinders after the first couple of episodes. Most of the main characters are understandable but some of the secondary ones are tough. Especially the IRA guy that comes to the bar, looking for the guns.

They should have an additional subtitle option that doesn't show [door opens] [crowd murmurs] etc.
