Man, why in the world would the Orioles want to deal Bedard? I think Broxton is a stud closer in waiting and Kemp is very good, but it is tough to find a lefty starter like Bedard. The Orioles starters would become even more putrid.
Bedard already told Baltimore he won't sign an extension. Can you blame him? The Orioles franchise has become a laughing stock... they've failed, yet again, to build a contender. I don't blame Bedard... and if the Orioles are smart, now is the time to move him with so many teams needing to trade for a pitcher since the free agent market is so bad.
It's true that Bedard said he would not sign an extension. He still has two years left on his current contract and is coming into his prime. The Orioles have two options. Trade him now while his value is very high and get some prospects that will help the team in the future when they are more prepared to compete. Or keep him for the final two years and watch him go to NY for nothing in return like Mussina did.Can you blame him? That depends. He is loved by all the fans in Baltimore despite his approach with the media and town. Never heard him open up after a start, before a game etc. Never heard of him making appearences around town or doing anything for the fans. He could easily be the anchor of a team, along with Markakis, that finally turns this club into a winning ball team. It's not like the Orioles are looking for a home town discount, they'll pay him at or above market value. I guess you have to say "what's the point"? You could always make as much money playing for BOS and NYY with a better chance of winning. Taking the easy way out seems to be the thing to do these days.Btw, I'll agree that the O's have had a bad stretch over the past ten years. But when you play BOS and NYY so many times a year and compete with them in your division for the playoffs, you already have an uphill battle. Angelos is by far the biggest problem we have currently. But his plan was to drop revenue and market share to avoid bringing a team to Washington. Well, that didn't work out, but he was able to set up a network called MASN that owns the rights to both the O's and Nats. This situation is similar to the YES network for NYY and NESN for BOS. We should begin to see the revenue from that in another year or two and that will hopefully allow us to better compete.Sorry for the rant. But if you ask me or any other Orioles fan, we would love to see Bedard stay. Unfortunately, he wants out, and if that is the way he feels, get rid of him now while we can get something in return. I don't want someone here who openly says he doesn't want to be here. And for God's sake, send him outside the AL East.
