Does anyone here have an elevator in their house? (1 Viewer)

Considering installing an elevator in my house since it may be helpful as my parents are getting older.

Most of the ones I've seen are really small and really only fit one person. They don't seem that useful.

Any FBGs have experience with this?

Stair lift instead?

ETA:  They only fit one person, but they have ones where you leave remotes on each floor to recall the chair to where you want.

And self install-able if handy

I've worked on a few homes (city town-houses and a couple suburban houses) with elevators- but havent designed one yet. you can get them bigger than 1-person.

IIRC there are two types- hydraulic or ... I think... hoist.. each with it's own requirements for the motor/drive and required clearances.

you'd be essentially making new rooms at each floor (where the elevator will go) so that vertical slice of spice needs to be clear of infrastructure... best is having closets stacked above each other.

how many floors do you need this to go?

Just two floors. From the little research I've done, it seems hydraulic is much more expensive. Ideally, I would get some use out of it in addition to hoisting my parents. Like being able to bring heavy stuff upstairs.

No, but I knew a guy with escalators in his house.
I'd be scared to climb into one of these Acme erector set elevators.

This escalator might be a better option since escalators can never be "out of order" ... when they're not working they just become stairs.

I know a guy who has one.  Not only is it useful to bring heavy stuff upstairs, you can also bring heavy stuff downstairs.  Not sure if you've considered that.

We will be putting an elevator into the home we are building next spring. Dimensions are 3 by 6.  Architect we hired had some difficulty fitting into the house plan as he had not previously incorporated one into a plan before. Big thing is that you need to be able to fit a wheelchair in. Also less expensive to put in your house as new construction.

You need to also have room for the mechanicals, ideally in the basement.

I'm 67, wife is 65. This is going to be out last house so we want it to be as accessible as possible as we age.

Family member moved into a home that had one already.  It ended up not so reliable, getting stuck a few times, which can be scary for older folks.  In looking at costs to put a new one in, the estimate came in at 20K.  3 floors, approximately 3x4, with the mechanicals on the rooftop (if that matters).
