MLB fires umpire Pat Hoberg for shared betting accounts

After a lengthy appeals process, Major League Baseball on Monday has fired umpire Pat Hoberg for "sharing" legal sports betting accounts with a friend who bet on baseball and for intentionally deleting messages key to the investigation into his conduct.

MLB said Hoberg "adamantly denied betting on baseball directly or indirectly," with commissioner Rob Manfred saying there was "no evidence" that Hoberg directly bet on games or manipulated the outcomes of any games "in any way."

In its statement, MLB said it fired Hoberg for failing to "uphold the integrity of the game" and that he "should have known" that his friend -- a professional poker player -- had bet on baseball from the shared account.

As much gambling that is going on in sports I don’t think NFL referees are immune from it.

It just hasn’t surfaced yet.
Every time I see a penalty called that was a figment of the officials imagination, I think “check his account”.

And this is why we know the NFL doesn't have the refs intentionally tilt games, it is too costly if it is ever found out that even a rogue official may have tainted the outcome of a game. Same reason Pete Rose aint sniffing the MLB hof.

We haven’t had refs get caught but the NFL had players betting on their own games. JohnnyU should know. Isaiah Rodgers, I think his name was. Played for the Colts.

The MLB story is worse than they’d have you believe. Hoberg and his friend deleted their Trlegram threads that documented their bets once they found out they were under investigation, so we’ll never know if the guy bet on baseball.

He should be banned for life. Simple as that.

I think there is a huge difference between individual refs going rouge....and the "league" or whoever telling refs to slant games....which is the narrative all the crybabies want you to believe when it comes to the chiefs....

I'm not sure why you'd think the nfl would punish anyone when they themselves are on the take.

They've handed out substantial suspensions to players and others for gambling, including multiple "indefinite suspensions" despite earing billions directly from promoting gambling in connection with NFL football. They would absolutely suspend a ref for this because the NFL hypocrisy knows no limitations when it comes to its gambling interests.

I just hope that those who think everything is fixed aren't still betting on these games. Because to put it kindly, that wouldn't seem to be very smart.
