Doing the Nielsen thing - Any shows you want me to help save? (1 Viewer)

The Nielsen people talked me into doing a couple of months of reporting what shows I watch. If there's a show you like that's getting poor ratings, post it in here and I'll give it a view and mark it down as a "watch".

FBG's helping FBG's.

Watch whatever re-runs are on across American Idol. See if you can generate enough interest to spark a hit piece on AI on USA Today.

Seriously, don't watch any major network dramas, they're all terrible. TV needs more good dramas like the kind you get on AMC and the premium channels. The world needs more Breaking Bads, Sopranos, and Mad Men, not more Law and Order: SUV's and Lost's.

I only watch one network drama (Parenthood) at the moment, but being on a network doesn't eliminate a show from being great. The hit rate is obviously far lower, but networks can still put out nice dramas.

Speaking of BB and MM, it's not like AMC is a shoe in for quality anymore either.

Truly great drama is hard to pull off, for any channel.

And what the hell are you talking about with LOST? That was a great show.

A good drama can't have the boundaries placed on it like the networks do.

I'm surprised how much violence NBC's The Blacklist gets away with. But it would be nice if they could show more boobies.

Agree with the Community and Parks & Rec mentions.

To add one to the list, I'll mention Suburgatory. Nothing original or groundbreaking about it, but I enjoy it anyway.

Tune into the Science Channel, and leave it there. :-) Only switching channels to catch the Gold Rush/Bering Sea Gold block on Fridays, a good movie on AMC/TNT/IFC, or Adult Swim to catch American Dad and Family Guy reruns.

I'm surprised this is still a thing. I assumed they got all the data they need from digital boxes and whatnot.
I was thinking the same thing. I was also surprised they didn't have a way for me to enter in the information online. They sent these goofy "diaries" that I mail back once the week is up. Seems very inefficient.

A friend of mine is part a Nielson family and they have a box, they don't diary. I thought the diary was for radio ratings only. I guess they collect data multiple ways.

I don't agree. Especially, if we're talking "good" drama, as opposed to great or all-time great drama.

The boundaries make it more difficult, but outside of the need to appeal to a broader audience, I don't see the boundaries being insurmountable.

Am I missing something, or couldn't Justified be shown on network TV? Maybe with a slight modification of some language, if that.

Couldn't "Walking Dead" be shown on a network?

What about Mad Men? Though, that's moot because Mad Men would've been cancelled quickly if on a network.

LOST was great drama. 24 was too, at times. Parenthood definitely qualifies as good drama. I hear the The Good Wife could certainly be classified as "good drama" even by prestige drama snob standards (I haven't seen because I'm biased against network dramas, but I plan to get to it someday).

Anyway, it's rare and maybe they can't fully compete with cable or streaming, you can make pretty good drama within the FCC restrictions. Shorter seasons would help, but networks have started looking at that more.

As AMC and Showtime are demonstrating at the moment, it's hard to put out good drama whether you're a network or not.

what world are people living on where Lost is considered good? It started out good, but turned to #### pretty quickly.

I feel like Lost was a good show, with some great characters, that missed it's chance to be a great show. It got too convoluted, too many story lines that went nowhere. Overall though, I look back on Lost fondly, and am happy that I watched the entire thing. It had some great writing, great acting, one of the few network shows I have ever watched that didn't make me feel like I needed to put my brain on auto-pilot in order to watch it without shaking my head. While the plot wandered, the actors and their dialogue was always top notch I thought.

Please watch the Bachelor. I enjoy the 2 hours I get to myself every Monday and the show is looking to be on a huge decline. Gotta keep it going.

I'm not sure what you mean by "pretty quickly", but I think most would agree that the show ranged from good to great and highly entertaining for the at least the first 3 seasons (up to "Though the Looking Glass"). That's 72 freaking episodes.

I enjoyed the rest, but after that, there were clearly some issues. Entertaining, but I could see how some would find that later seasons disappointing.

Still, it was an insanely ambitious show that was executed well. I'm not sure how it happened, but I can't imagine anyone else trying to pull off a drama with so many characters, and devoting entire episodes to single characters. An amazing feat to do that and still be very entertaining. For at least 72 episodes.

Please don't mark down Neighbors. I want it to be cancelled but for some reason continue to watch it.
