Dolphins finalizing hiring of Jeff Ireland as GM

The Dolphins are currently in the process of finalizing the hiring of Jeff Ireland as their new general manager.

Club owner Wayne Huizenga flew to the team's training facility at 12:20 -- yes, I said flew as in aboard his helicopter -- to meet the man who will work hand in hand with football czar Bill Parcells.

Although the deal is not yet final, it is believed very little can get in the way of this becoming official. Only a glitch on contract negotiations, or a glitch with the Dallas Cowboys who currently employ Ireland, or perhaps Ireland insults Huizenga's family (kidding) could keep the hiring from happening.

Parcells had dinner with Ireland last night and showed up to the training facility with the guy at around 8 a.m.

What's not getting discussed here is what will be an interesting offshoot of this hiring: how smart will Jerry Jones look in this coming year's draft now that both Parcells and Parcells' lieutenant aren't around anymore to counsel him?

I thought Parcell's lieutenant was BB?

On 1310 out of Dallas(no link), a note was mentioned that Jones will try to block Ireland from going anywere until after the draft since this is when Ireland's contract officially runs out.

I heard about this down here too which makes the timing of Mueller's firing even more interesting. Wouldn't the fins want to keep him around through the draft if Ireland can't be hired until after the draft? I guess Parcells thinks he can do a better job than Mueller.

I don't see the point of having a guy involved in the draft that you have no confidence in...when you decide someone needs to be let go, you do it then and there (this is true of any field, not just professional sports, IMHO).

This was part of a discussion with Rick Gosselin of The Dallas Morning News.Jerry wants to keep Ireland around til after the draft, while Parcells would obviously like to have him for the draft as well.Compensation may come into play. Possibly swapping draft positions in the third round was mentioned. Parcells deems his second round pick as far too valuable in that this will be his best opportunity to trade to help stockpile picks, which is what he needs and wants to do. Far better chance here than the first rounder.

As I asked in the other thread, isn't there a rule that gives a staff member the absolute right to interview and be hired for a better position (i.e. get a promotion) regardless of his contractual obligations to his current team? Ireland would be a GM for the Dolphins, so that would be a promotion, right?

Rotoworld just mentioned that the Doplhins might have to surrender a late round pick for the services of Ireland - pre-draft.The raid of the Dallas front office/coaching staff has begun.

Honestly, I thought the same until this morning, and with the announcement I just read there is no mention of compensation to the dolphins, so could have just been Dallas talk radio fodder.

Dolphins hire of Jeff Ireland as GM (updated)

The Miami Herald is reporting that Jeff Ireland has been hired as the Dolphins general manager and the Dolphins are confirming our report with a news release.

No press conference has been scheduled yet but Ireland has already finalized the details of his new contract with Miami.

"I am excited about joining the Dolphins as their general manager," Ireland said in a statement. "I know the great tradition of the team, and in my mind [it] is one of the flagship franchises in the NFL."

Club owner Wayne Huizenga flew to the team's training facility at 12:20 -- yes, I said flew as in aboard his helicopter -- to meet the man who will work hand in hand with football czar Bill Parcells. Huizenga left sometime in the 2 o'clock hour.

Ireland will begin working for the Dolphins, "immediately," according to the Dolphins which ends speculation whether he would have to wait until after the April draft when his old contract with the Dallas Cowboys was scheduled to expire.

Let me give you an example of how certain this hiring was: When the Falcons were thinking they had landed Parcells, he practically made Ireland's hiring part of the deal. He wanted Ireland in and Rich McKay out. So Arthur Blank agreed to hire Ireland, sight unseen, assuming Parcells was coming.

Parcells and Ireland worked together for four seasons in Dallas and Ireland was in his current position for three of those. The two had dinner last night and showed up to the training facility at around 8 a.m.

This became official around 3:15 p.m.

The Texans did this by keeping Casserly around until the draft was over.

More from Rotoworld. Apparanty Jerry Jones let Ireland out of his contract . . .

"The Dolphins' hiring of former Cowboys' director of scouting Jeff Ireland as general manager took effect immediately.

Apparently Cowboys owner Jerry Jones let Ireland out of his contract without pursuing any compensation. Jones initially indicated that Ireland would have to stay with the team until after April's draft. Ireland's first order of business is probably to fire Cam Cameron.

Now we'll see whether Jerruh knows anything about drafting on his own, which has been what he's wanted all along. I'd suggest that he ought to be careful what he wishes for.

That hasn't been a very impressive offense of late. Regardless, they'd have to pay compensation for him for what would be a lateral move, unless you mean for them to hire him as the head coach, which seems awfully premature for Garrett IMHO.

:lmao: Bill Parcells -- the king at rebuilding franchises... and then tearing them down once he gets a new job.
i hope the patriots beat the fat ******* into a bloody pulp  now he's going to steal sparano tooand ireland wasn't even a bill guy, he was hired by jerry before bill even came along. bill said he wanted to give ireland his eyes so he could continue when he left, what a crock.interesting factoid. last season the patriots and cowboys let each other scout one another. ireland visited them and pioli visited the cowboys.

Why do you keep saying this? Jerry has always relied on his scouts.

Owner Jerry Jones had the chance to squash the move but didn't, partly because he appreciated the Dolphins allowing him to hire Jason Garrett away from them last offseason.

The twist is that Garrett, the offensive coordinator, might be the next one out of town -- unless he's beaten out the door by assistant head coach Tony Sparano, who could also end up in Miami with Ireland and another familiar face, former Cowboys coach Bill Parcells.

Jones said the Dolphins don't have to give any draft picks or other compensation to the Cowboys for hiring Ireland, just like Dallas didn't have to give Miami anything for hiring Garrett. They did clear up one key sticking point: The draft preparations that Jones paid Ireland to compile, and the secrets he doesn't want the Dolphins to know.

"We've got that worked out to my satisfaction," Jones said. "That was a concern, but it's not a concern any more."

Mueller was fired since Parcells wants to be the decision maker. Ireland must be a guy willing to let Parcells do what he wants.

Please, please tell me which draft and which players. Please, I'm begging! :thumbup:ETA: I'll save you some time on the 03' draft Bill had nothing to do with that one except he made a case for drafting Witten and he didn't want TNew, as he watched the Cowboys put up their drafting board which he had absolutely nothing to do with. So start with 04 please.

We've been through this exercise before I believe. Look at all of the 1st rounders dating back to Jimmy's first tenure, and you tell me if there aren't trends based around Jimmy's and Bill's presence versus absence.

No we have not and the draft goes much longer than just one round. Jimmy was indeed in charge, but Bill was not. Even with Bill here there were former coaches that Jerry trusted and consulted before the draft including Jimmy.

Success in Dallas tied to Ireland

By EDGAR THOMPSON

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Bill Parcells gets much of the credit for the Dallas Cowboys' recent renaissance.

But behind the scenes, Jeff Ireland made many of the personnel decisions that have made the Cowboys the favorite to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

So it makes sense that Parcells, the Dolphins' executive vice president of football operations, would want to reunite with Ireland, who is expected in South Florida today to interview to be Miami's new general manager.

The Dolphins fired GM Randy Mueller on Monday.

Some agents who know the work of Ireland - Dallas' vice president of college and pro scouting - believe he would be perfect for Miami.

"He's probably the best person out there," said Lance Riddle, who represents Cowboys running back Tyson Thompson. "He did a great job in Dallas. He orchestrated most of the turnaround."

In three seasons overseeing the Cowboys' drafts, Ireland exhibited a rare ability to find quality players in the later rounds, as well as players who weren't drafted at all.

Thompson was an undrafted free agent in 2005 who has been the Cowboys' primary kick returner.

Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo and big-play wide receiver Patrick Crayton also were undrafted rookies identified by Ireland. And defensive end Jay Ratliff, a key backup, was a seventh-round pick out of Auburn in 2005.

Ireland also flashed his eye for talent in the early rounds. With four of the team's first five picks, he landed three starting defenders - linebacker DeMarcus Ware and ends Marcus Spears and Chris Canty - as well as running back Marion Barber.

Ratliff's agent, Southern California-based Mark Slough, said Ireland has been a shrewd talent evaluator for years. Slough met him almost a decade ago when Ireland was an area scout for the Kansas City Chiefs. Ireland's stepfather, E.J. Holub, was a star for the Chiefs' Super Bowl teams in the 1960s.

"His roots are in scouting," Slough said of Ireland. "That serves him well. ... He treats everyone fairly. People like to work with him."

The feeling league-wide is that Ireland will bring his golden touch to Miami, where he and Parcells would face a monumental rebuilding job.

"It will leave a void with the Cowboys organization, but it will be a coup for the Dolphins to have him," Slough said. "He deserves it."
Just saying, don't see too much Parcells there............do we?
I guess you think Larry Lacewell is full of it then (from May 2007):
"It's been off and on," said Larry Lacewell, the Cowboys' retired scouting director, who worked with Parcells in his first two seasons in Dallas. "Under Parcells, it was him. Before, it was scouts and whoever. ... We got Jerry and Stephen [Jones] to take him out and made him mad and told him we're going to take Newman."

Coaches wanting one player and scouts wanting another is a common occurrence in NFL draft rooms.

Under new coach Wade Phillips, scouts and personnel men will have more say than ever.
The whole lobbying story about Newman, for example, only reinforces that it was Parcells who had the final say, and that they had to convince him to get Newman. Link

BTW, this same article says that Ireland was hired in 2005, after Parcells was hired of course.

Success in Dallas tied to Ireland

Parcells DID NOT WANT Newman, lol. You got it twisted.

Ireland joined the Cowboys scouting department in 2001 as a national scout. He made a quick impression on the organization, and with a strong approval from Parcells, Jones hired him in 2005 as the team's vice president of college and pro scouting, replacing the retired Larry Lacewell.

Jones pointed out that he still has a good relationship with Parcells, as well as Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga, who did a favor for them this spring.

Last January, the Dolphins allowed Jason Garrett, who was under contract in Miami as the quarterbacks coach, to interview with the Cowboys for the head coach and offensive coordinator positions. Although he didn't land the head coaching job, the Cowboys hired Garrett shortly after. The Dolphins could've easily balked, stopping the Cowboys from hiring a coach under contract and giving him an assistant-to-assistant job.

Jones said the Cowboys will not receive any draft-pick compensation for losing Ireland.

"No, I didn't have to give one for Jason Garrett," Jones added.

Now the Cowboys are hoping to keep Garrett around, too.

The Cowboys offensive coordinator is expected to meet with the Falcons on Friday regarding Atlanta's vacant head coaching position. Cowboys assistant head coach Tony Sparano also is expected to speak with Atlanta, according to reports.

With the Cowboys practicing this week in preparation for the divisional playoff game on Sunday, Jan. 13, Falcons officials will travel to Dallas to conduct the interviews.

But Jones said he is not worried about potentially losing a top assistant and stated he expects his coaches to get this kind of attention when the team is winning.

"I'm just proud that we're having that kind of success," said Jones, who declined to answer if any other teams have contacted him for permission to speak with Garrett or any other assistant. "When we're competing for Super Bowls, it's always there. I don't worry about it at all. I think Jason is doing a good job. And I'm fully aware that if we do good jobs around here, we're going to have people come after our personnel, on and off the field."

Sparano, who also coaches the Cowboys offensive line, has received interest from other clubs in each of the past two years regarding an offensive coordinator position. Jones has given Sparano a pay raise and improved his job title in order to keep him before.

But other than a pay raise, the Cowboys won't be able to offer much to entice Sparano or Garrett if a head coaching position is offered.

And that's what it came down to with Ireland as well. Since Jones bought the team in 1989, he has been the team's general manager.

Even head coach Wade Phillips cracked a joke Wednesday in his press conference that Ireland was smart to take the opportunity presented to him by the Dolphins.

"The promotion was the key thing. I don't think he was going to be moved up to general manager," Phillips said, playfully hinting that Jones wouldn't be giving up his title. "But Jeff was an important part of the organization. We're happy for him and the opportunities he's getting now. I know he'll do a great job for them. He did a great job for us."

Ireland has orchestrated the last three draft days for the Cowboys that have produced talented players such as DeMarcus Ware, Marcus Spears, Marion Barber and Jay Ratliff. He also helped work a trade with Cleveland last season that moved the Cowboys down only four spots in the first round, where they drafted Anthony Spencer, and managed to get the Browns' first-round draft pick in 2008, which likely will be the No. 22 overall pick but could be as high as No. 21.

In Miami, Ireland is expected to be in charge of not only overseeing the draft but player personnel, including free agency.

So what's next for the Cowboys in the scouting department?

Jones said he doesn't plan on adding another scout to the staff before the draft.

It appears college scouting director Tom Ciskowski will be in charge of handling the draft.

"Tom has always been very valued," Jones said. "We don't have a concern because we have Tom Ciskowski, and he's going to be doing what he's been doing and we have him under contract right now. That made this possible, too. We just hit the ground running on the draft and what we need to do this spring. I haven't sat down and talked with him. Right now, Tom is basically in charge of the college scouting."

In fact, Jones said he doesn't necessarily have to replace Ireland at all.

"I don't know," Jones said. "We have a director in college scouting (Ciskowski) and we have a director in pro scouting (Brian Gaine). I don't know that we need to replace Jeff.

"Again, this is a great opportunity for Jeff. It's a good opportunity for us. I want people to see if they come in here and if they come in here and get an opportunity, they can advance."

Ireland has advanced. Now the Cowboys must wait and see if Garrett and/or Sparano will be leaving as well.

BT, reread what I wrote. The point is that Parcells had to be lobbied into drafting Newman, which reinforced his primacy when he was there as far as draft decisions went.

Yes Sir, I did. About two weeks ago on the Randy Galloway Show (ESPN 1310). Randy was running his mouth (nothing new really) about what a great eye for talent Parcells was and that he was responsible for rebuilding the Cowboys.Well, Bryan Broaddus was listening to the show and called in. Bryan Broaddus was with the Cowboys before Parcells and was heavily involved with their drafting. He said that Parcells was giving too much credit for not only the drafting but the rebuilding. He went on to name which guys were Parcells guys and which were Jerry's. TNew was Jerry's nough said. He said that Bill wanted no part of Newman and this was obvious during the time that Bill was here but the he was the highest on the board and the Cowboys were drafting to the board. Bill didn't have to be lobbied they were going to do it anyway so he backed off.Bryan went on to say that Parcell sat and watched for the most part but he lobbied very hard for Witten. He said (which I believe is true) that Bill has an eye for TEs but not for linemen. Bottom line: You say, Bill had to be lobbied. I say, Bill is stubborn and believes everything should go his way. Was not there during the scouting (hired later) and was forced to take Newman. With all due respect, I know for a fact it's the latter. They were drafting Newman regardless of Parcells input and they did. See T.O.Bryan also said that Ireland should be the one given FULL credit for the turnaround in Dallas not Parcells. Parcells knows what he's doing by the hire, Miami will be more than happy to have Ireland. That team is going to see a complete turnaround. Rejoice Miami, rejoice.ETA: It was Bryan called the show not Robert.

Good read on Ireland . . .

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/hashmarks/0-5-5...-nice-hire.html

"Over the last few years, I've had the pleasure of getting to know the Dolphins' new GM, Jeff Ireland. We actually went to college together at Baylor, but I only knew him as the kicker for our No. 7 ranked football team in 1991. (We did not finish at No. 7, but that's irrelevant)

Jeff was destined for a career in NFL personnel ever since he started spending summers with his grandfather Jim Parmer, a legendary scout who helped build the Bears' 1985 championship team. He joined the Cowboys as a national scout in 2001, and was promoted to vice president of college and pro scouting for the club before the 2005 draft.

At 38, he's already earned respect around the league for his relentless work ethic and organizational skills. From the start, Bill Parcells and Ireland's predecessor, Larry Lacewell, were not on the same page. And that's why owner Jerry Jones had to force one of his closest friends into early retirement.

Parcells immediately tapped Ireland to run the scouting department, although he waited a couple of months before making it official. Recently, I had the rare opportunity to watch a college football game with Ireland. When a Baylor defensive back intercepted Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, I turned to Ireland to say something about how great the play was.

"The kid doesn't have any straight-line speed," Ireland shot back.

He admits that he's no longer capable of watching a game for pure enjoyment, and that's what makes him so appealing to Parcells. When the legendary former coach watches college games on TV, he's always trying to envision how he would use certain players.

Earlier today I called the Cowboys' former assistant director of pro scouting, Bryan Broaddus, for some background on Ireland.

"Jeff is very, very articulate," Broaddus said. "He's able to paint a picture of a player that everybody in the room can understand. He can quickly think of a couple of players to compare a prospect to, and that's a great trait. And I think one of the most admirable things about him is that he's not afraid to go against the group.

"He'll respectfully disagree without beating you over the head. And when we went a different direction, he was able to move on to the next battle. He'll be a GM who works shoulder to shoulder with his scouts, and those guys will enjoy that."

I'm told Ireland tried to talk Parcells out of drafting USC left tackle Jacob Rogers before the 2004 draft, but was overruled. The Cowboys drafted Rogers as the No. 52 overall pick, and to my knowledge, he never played an offensive snap.

Now I don't believe for a second that Ireland will have final say on football decisions, but at least he won't rubber-stamp everything Parcells wants to do. I think the first order of business for the Dolphins will be deciding what direction to go at quarterback.

That is, after they hire Cowboys assistant head coach Tony Sparano to replace Cam Cameron.

For Hashmarks, I'm Matt Mosley."

So Cowboy fans - how much of the Cowboy turnaround can be attributed to Ireland & Parcells? 25%? 50%? 100%

I'm not sure on percentages but I think most here in Dallas would agree: Ireland>>>>>>>>>>>>Parcells.

Jerry did give Parcells some power but when it came to the draft, the organization relied on their scouts. I remember Jerry commenting on this some time ago. He said he paid his scouts to scout and put together their drafting board and unless something came up they went by that board.

IMHO Ireland is not given nearly enough credit and Parcells way too much. If I had to give a percentage it would be something in the range: Jeff (75-65%)-Bill (25-35%).

Dude, Jeff is a stud!

If he's that much of a stud, why wouldn't Jerry step aside as a GM in favor of promoting this guy? That seems like a pretty glaring error on Jerry's part given that that allowed him to get away.

I'm take a stab at answering this question - EGO?

I agree, letting him get away was a mistake, but Jerry owed Miami and they are cashing in.
