Downtown LA Stadium Will be called Farmers Field (1 Viewer)

Because when I think of Los Angeles, the first thing that comes to mind is.....farming. :blackdot:
Actually, Los Angeles and Farmers sounds like a good fit. When I first heard "Farmers", it made me think of Vin Scully pitching radio ads during Dodger games for "Farmer John" link sausages. To this day, I when I think "Farmers", I think of Vin's voice talking "Dodger Dogs". But that's just me...

It's probably better for the company that bought the naming rights if you stop and think about the name for a second. Farmers Insurance wants you to be thinking about Farmers Field and why it's called that.

Every time we say the name of the stadium, do we have to follow it with that "Bum-da-dum, ba-dum-da-dum!" jingle?

Farmers insurance. It would probably have the LA Vikings or Jaguars somewhere in the name as well.

:lmao: Vin Scully is a treasure. I feel blessed to have grown up listening to him and Chick.

I too grew up listening to Dodger games and the short wave broadcasts would reach Northern California fairly clear at night. Vin is the best baseball announcer there ever was.

Agreed. Some of my best memories of Los Angeles were going into Dodger Stadium and just kicking back with the game on the radio head phones and Scully calling the action. Some peanuts and Dodger Dogs as you were coming out of a beer fog from ShortStops across the way...good times.

When I think of San Diego, I think of...Priests or Electricity? WAT?

When I think of Green Bay, Wisconsin, I think of  - wait, that should be San Francisco...no, they're Giant...49ers.

*head explodes*

You are insane, Scully is the best that ever was. But i guess that comes with being a bay area guy and prob an anti-dodger.Only announcer that knows when to talk and when to let the view speak for itself. Doesnt need a color man as he does it all. And he has the stories to go with everything. Also, doesnt miss a pitch like other announcers do when they are in story mode.

Anyway, why would JAx need to change names? Unless Jacksonville believes they would get another team and pulls a CLE on the team to keep the name and history, I think LA Jaguars would stay (for better or worse)

Seems like a good move by Farmer's. I'm assuming they are on the hook for very little or no money until the stadium is built and an NFL team is in place. But for future years, they will get free publicity out having their name tied to an imaginary stadium in a frequently discussed topic that will never fall out of the news until a team actually shows up in LA.

On the flip side, $0.7 Billion for 30 year naming rights seems outrageously high.

The Raiders don't count? You have to ask Raiders fan.
Just my $.02The Raiders will always belong to Oakland
When the Raiders moved back to Oakland for 1995, they signed a 16-year lease which was set to expire in 2011. That lease got extended in 2009 and now is set to expire at the end of the 2013 season. Al Davis can then pick up and move the Raiders anywhere for the 2014 season. Farmers Field is scheduled to be ready by 2015. So Al Davis has the option of moving the Raiders to the LA Coliseum for 1 season in 2014 and then moving into Farmers Field the following year.

LA would have to want the Raiders..... I'm not sure they would after Crazy al's last departure.Farmers Insurance huh? I thought they named it after the LA Times' own Sam Farmer.

Do football fans in LA really want a NFL team?

Wouldn’t having at team in LA limit what games are actually shown on TV in the LA market?

The few times that I have been to LA during football season they seem to get the “best” games of the week on the local channels.

Here in NC you are forced to watch the Panthers (if you don’t have the Sunday ticket).

It all depends on what the payment structure looks like. If Farmers doesn't start paying until the stadium is actually built AND pays an annual amount (rather than upfront fee): a. they get the immediate advertising benefit even though the field isn't built yet

b. that $700M will be worth a lot less in present-value terms

So until we know more, it could be a brilliant deal that is basically the equivalent of paying something like $15M a year in present-value terms.

It is not a big priority for those of us in LA, however (contrary to popular belief) if a competative team is fielded, the market is here. The Rams had something like 54,000 season ticket holders (in the Coliseum) the year before Carroll Rosenbloom moved to the team to Anaheim in the late 70s. Attendance steadily declined after Georgia Frontiere took over, mainly because the teams in later years were awful and also because the Rams never caught the fancy of the folks in Orange County as they had in LA.As you noted the big downside for NFL fans is that the viewing options are limited when there is a local team.

 living in the OC....(in case you dont know its the area just south of LA where the baseball team known as the Angels play and try to milk the LA name since the rest of the country doesnt seem to know or care that there are places south of LA called Orange County and San Diego... but thats a topic for the FFA)....i am happy that LA doesnt have a team so we do get the best games on reg TV. It also means I usually get the Chargers games, which i am also happy about.

it's kind of a fitting to america today that there's no farms anywhere near "farmer's field"
