Any Jag fans want to share thoughts on needs and rumors? They've added Brian Williams and Stockar McDougle, both needs. Not sure McDougle is the answer, and the secondary could still use more talent. Ayodele left and no one shed a tear, but OLB needs to be replaced. Are Taylor and his backups satisfactory? What about TE here?

I voted Marcedes Lewis. The Jags only use their TEs to block(almost) and Lewis would be the perfect fit. He can receive AND block. IMO, he's the second best TE in this draft by far and I think he will be effective in the NFL. The Jags have a good defence, a young WR corp and Lewis would be a perfect fit.

I don't believe Howard will still be on the board at this point...but score one for Del Rio's D if he is...
I put three OLBs in because I have heard Del Rio is in love with one. The OLB depth is pretty much gone for 4-3s with the guys on this list. I like Ryans ALOT more than Howard and I voted for him.

JDR likes Howard. If the draft breaks like this I'd expect them to try and trade down a few spots and get Howard, if they find no takers I think they'll take Howard at 28. I'm not in love with the pick, but oh well, the keep refusing to hire me. :D

I heard he loved an OLB. If it's come out that it's Howard, that's fine, but I doubt he expects Ryans to be available here.

The votes so far are actually in line with what I'm hearing locally. Ryans/Howard/Mangold/Pope/Lewis are the names most mentioned if nobody big falls. Ryans is a fine pick, but Howard is the name I keep hearing from people in contact with the Jags front office types. It could of course be a smoke screen, but Howard's name just keeps popping up.

Yep, I just went to a Jags draft forum to ask, and didn't have to, because what you just posted is pretty much the same thing I read. I like JDR and I have no idea if Howard is the right pick here. He is one of the best interviews and character guys I've listened to, but I don't think he's instinctive like Ryans. A better decathlete? No doubt. A better LB? Doubtful.

Yeah, most of the talk has been LB. A lot of the national folks have the Jags taking CB here, but not the locals. They need a guard but I think they'll wait until later the first day.

The only offensive position I could see them here is RB and I don't think they go for Addai. I would think Maroney would be their guy.

There's a lot of talk about Maroney as well. Some fans seem to think that it would be good to get him and it would be good to take him so the colts don't get him. As silly as that sounds, I've heard it said multiple times by fans. I think the colts want Addai anyways. Fred Taylor's recent absense from Jacksonville during voluntary work outs has added fuel to the Maroney crowd.

Jason Allen is the guy left most likely to make the Jags say "oops!". If his hip holds up, he could be a force for a long time. I'd be tempted to pick him at this point if it was my call.

Well I voted Maroney because

A) There's a heck of a lot of LB depth

B) Most of the free agent help has been on the defensive side.

C) The Jags problem last year was scoring points.

Agree with b and c, but for a 4-3 team the OLB depth is three deep here. Take one now or forever hold your peace. Or enjoy Spencer Havner. Us Bruin fans just loved have the worst run defense in the history of the world.

In hindsight, I think there should have been some DEs on the list. Spicer is 31 years old and his back up, Bobby McCray looks to be a pass rush only guy. I don't see Kiwi as having been drafted and he's a guy they might look at here.

Agreed. I could have dropped an OL and DB for Hali and Kiwi. Stop your whining unless you want to do round 2.

LOL.. Sir, yes sir!!You're doing an excellent job. And I didn't even think about it until right before I posted it. But I was looking over my board and thinking about the benefits of going Allen in this sceneario and realized Kiwi hadn't been taken. I have Allen and then Kiwi as BAP with Kiwi as a bigger need.

I went Howard because to go maroney would say that greg Jones was a wasted pick and its too early in gregs career to say that... Howard is the pick here, no GM likes to look like a fool that quickly.

I like the Jags taking Maroney too. Taylor is old and banged up and their other RBs are not the answer. If they don't take a RB this year they are just delaying the inevitable. If Maroney is really worth a first round pick he should be taken here.

The Jags really aren't pretty strong on Defense but they could always use depth. However, they've been able to build up their D without first round picks the past few years, so I don't think they have to go D. Leftwich, Reggie Williams and Matt Jones were there 1st rounders the last 3 years. Maroney is not as much of a reach as Jones was at this spot last year so it could make sense.

Right now, they have Pat Thomas or Jorge Cordova as a starting OLB. An OLB pick would not be for depth at this point. But Maroney is a popular pick for them here, look like he's gonna win it.

What do you think about them taking Maroney to block the Colts from getting him. The colts will suffer some this year with the loss of James. If they can't replace him with a top Rookie RB you will see Rhodes and committee. They should be able to hold their own, but it won't be the same as James. There will be some 3rd and shorts that they won't convert and I don't believe they can fight for the extra yards like James did. I think it will very easily cost them 2-3 games. And that could be the difference between a first round bye and a wild card game for the Jags. A lot depends on just how good the scouting reports are on thes RBs. I haven't seen them play much but the 1st round RBs seem to end with Maroney and the next guy Addai seems to be rated a bit lower. If he is really a step down then I think this pick is worth it for the Jags.

i thought of that too but no GM wants to admit he made a mistake on a first rounder that fast and greg jones hasnt had a shot yet.

A lot of Jags fans think that Maroney is the right move for just that reason. I'm not a big Maroney fan to begin with(Big Ten system back?), but even if I was I have hard time supporting the idea of spending a first round pick on a player so another team doesn't get him. Even the colts. First rounders are a big deal, even late first rounders. You've got to think longterm. The Jags are in a small market and need to built a team that can compete every year, not just next year. Until they develop a tradition of fan support it will be a battle to fill the seats and keep the team in town. I don't see Maroney(or any other RB likely to be available) as the guy that provides the most benefit over the next 4-6 years.

I think the colts want Addai anyways. Their RB has to be able to pass protect and from what I've seen Addai is well ahead of Maroney in that area.

Greg Jones was a late 2nd round pick.

I prefer Howard, but I think the pick might be Maroney. However, the front ofice has shown recently that they will mix it up a bit. So, I wouldn't rule out Jason Allen with this pick.

And no team should ever draft someone just to keep another team from getting them.

I think they go with Maroney for two reasons.

1) they need a true every down back to replace Freddy T.

2) they don't want Indianapolis to get their hands on him

IMO, with the selection of Mario Willians and the Texans' interest in a second round RB increases the chances of selecting Addai/Maroney.

Unless the Texans move up (which is a possibility), you would have two divisional opponents (Indy the other) right behind you looking at RB.
