Drafting 3rd of 13 (1 Viewer)

Have the #3 pick in a 13 team points league (please see scoring below before answering). Not sure where I should go at this spot. Here are my options:

1) If ARod falls I would definitely grab him, but the odds are slim to none

2) Grab Chase Utley - he is by far the best 2B but there is a decent amount of 2B depth and we dont start a middle infielder.

3) Grab Johan Santana - I know this would be WAY early if it was a 5x5 league, but a stud pitcher can help you dominate a league. If Johan has something silly like 22 wins, 250K, 230 IP and a couple of complete game shutouts, he could outscore EVERYONE by 100 points (including A-Rod). Those projections may be high but they certainly arent impossible.

4) Grab Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez or Jimmy Rollins - Leaning toward Jose Reyes on a bounceback year. Ramirez is tempting but I dont think he has the same success without Cabrera to back him up. Reyes outscores all three of them based on projections.

Any thoughts on this?

Starting Lineup:

C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util, SP, SP, SP, SP, SP, P, P, RP, RP

I have a spreadsheet that I put together located HERE that will help you determine projected points values easier. Enter the player's names as "Rodriguez, Alex" and the stats should come right up. Obviously Holds, CG, SHO, and HBP are not included because there are no projections for those.

Here is the scoring:

AB (-.25), R (1), H (1), RBI (1), SB (2), CS (-1), BB (1), HBP (1), K (-.5), TB (1), IP (2.1), W (11.5), L (-4), CG (10), SHO (10), SV (11.5), ER (-2), K (.75), HLD (11), BSV (-4.5)

Here are a few projected scores based on fantasybaseball.com stats:

Rollins, Jimmy 661.25

Reyes, Jose 705.50

Ramirez, Hanley 633.25

Rodriguez, Alex 740.00

Utley, Chase 643.50

Cabrera, Miguel 628.00

Holliday, Matt 690.75

Fielder, Prince 575.75

Howard, Ryan 610.75

Wright, David 659.25

Santana, Johan 725.30

Peavy, Jake 692.30

Sabathia, C.C. 626.05

Beckett, Josh 623.40

Bedard, Erik 619.80

based on what I see here Santana would not be a bad pick - sure its a little early but I think the NL move to a better team will help his numbers even further.

If you're not sold on Reyes I would go Santana.

David Wright- The guy is so young and his numbers have been getting better every year. Imagine if he keeps up that trend. After a slow start last year he was argueably as good if not better than Arod.

Yeah the more I look it over the more it is coming down to Reyes vs Santana for me. I guess Ive read too many LIMA articles to grab a pitcher in the first but if he has a huge year I'll be kicking myself. Wright is intriguing too but I feel like I could grab an Aramis / Atkins / Zimmerman or even Lowell later in the draft and would be better with a 2B or SS early.

You can also get a Jeter, Guillen, Furcal, Tulowinski, Tejada, Renteria, O.Cabrera later. As well as a B. Roberts, I. Kinsler, R. Cano, D. Uggla, K. Johnson, A. Hill. Taking Reyes 3rd is a big mistake. While he's a solid player, he may only help you in half your categories. Wright can help you in just about all of them. I'd even go with Holliday if not Wright.

I like Santana and he may very well domiate, but it sure is a huge gamble not drafting your 1st offensive player until pick 24. Good luck.

It is a points league remember, so we dont have categories. It doesnt matter if your team just steals, hits homeruns or just get on base all the time, the most overall production wins.

I guess I'd just rather have Wright and C. Guillen over Reyes and Zimmerman. The key here could be your scoring system and Reyes' 70 plus SBs. That could be huge @ 2 pts per. The question is can he get you enough pts in total bases, walks etc?

Yeah thats a fair point, I'm not trying to sound disagreable... thats why I'm asking  Wright is definitely on the short list as well. I did have the same thought though about grabbing Guillen, and even if I grab Reyes I might get Guillen too because I can start him at 1st and then trade him mid-way thru the year for pitching or to fill a hole.

The other thing about this league that is tricky is that we are only allowed FIFTEEN moves all season, if your player goes on the DL and you need to replace him... thats one move. Trades dont count in that limit so I tend to build for a trade in the draft.
