Dressing Like A Dad... (1 Viewer)

Here in southern california, we wear athletic gear like Vuori. The shorts are mid thigh...which is probably a culture shock for the Midwesterners/southerners based on what I've seen in the crowd at Pinehurst this weekend.

Any short close to the knees screams "no clue" or "grandpa." Nothing wrong with that just providing some insight.

And the "Khaki shorts and a polo" look isn't in style for 40 years....that's not how this works.

So I don’t dress like that…..but I was pissing my pants.

Great post Joe!

At what age should we just accept our fate, versus "trying too hard" to look young?

FTR, never been into style, but I believe in wearing clothing that fits, and not letting oneself go physically.

I'm not really interested in seeing so much of your thighs.

You should always dress appropriately and that means age appropriate, however just not caring anymore isn't a very honorable path. It's not what other people think, it's about having a little self respect.

To each his own though, we all have our own value system.(mine just happens to be right) :)

I think it's important to dress and be the part, whatever that is, but I also would not call that approach 'try hard.' Although I write that from the perspective of someone who has for the most part not done that through clothing. New suits for work fall, winter, and spring are pretty much it and it has provided value given my role. I show up to those same meetings in a polo this time of year, but that's because of the sweat, and where I live I know that's only mid-May to mid-Sep give or take.

i just pretty much wear simms stuff all summer flip flops shorts and shirts but im like 95 percent trout bum so thats just how it is take that to the bank bromigos

Are white crew socks considered dad socks? Asking for a friend.
White crew socks bad, black crew socks good. 🤷‍♂️

I was surprised that crew socks seem to have made a comeback with younger people. I hate them - only wear ankle or no show socks now.

Although I do wear compression socks when hiking frequently :bag:

It's complicated. https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktoker-knows-generation-millennial-or-gen-z-based-on-socks-2023-11

I have some sort of things (sock like minus the foot) that help to alleviate the shin splints.

Yeah - but we are old farts. For socks I’m all about comfort. I find crew socks and longer to be too hot and uncomfortable.

I wear ankle socks or no show socks, except in the winter when I wear crew socks (with jeans). I asked if that was too “dad” in the Dad Essentials bracket thread and no one answered me. I took that to mean that everyone was embarrassed for me and too polite to say so.

Footballguys Free For All Style Advice is one of my favorite things...

Its an eye-opener for me because I honestly have no idea what kind of shoes, shorts, socks or shirts other dads around me wear. I'm completely clueless on this topic, have never paid any attention to something like whether a dude's shirt is tucked in or how long his shorts are.
Same. I remember one time when I was sitting around in an airport just looking at people, and it suddenly dawned on me that I was just about the only male in the terminal whose belt was visible. Nobody else was tucking in their shirt except for me. It was shocking, like in They Live when Rowdy Roddy Piper sees the aliens for the first time and realizes that he's just been totally oblivious all along.

Ever since then, I've tried to pay more attention to how other men dress, but I just can't. I'm just not wired to care.

yep
Both of my kids, 19 and 20, wear white crew socks with slides. So not Dad socks.
Yep ankle socks are the new dad socks now. All the younger people at my gym wear crew socks while the older Millenials and Gen Xer's wear ankle socks.
Nice! My hairless lower legs want to thank the youngins for this change. ;)

Maybe I'm on an island but I'm more of a ball cap, t shirt (no tuck), golf shorts / jeans, and slides sorta dad.
I’m starting to wear a baseball cap more often but still not most of the time. Probably should, which reminds me that I have my annual skin cancer check next week.
T shirt (untuck of course), basketball shorts, chacos for this dad.

I’ll need to start looking at people’s feet more often. I had no idea.

FWIW, all my kids wear different socks. My 13yo has my favorite - he wears crazy Christmas socks year round. (He was born right before Christmas, it’s become part of his identity)

Yeah - my kids aren’t big in to flip flops either.

That'll do it for 99% of the guys.

The interesting part is about 50% of them think they're that 1%.

They are not.
