Drew Brees Thread (1 Viewer)

Impending free agent Drew Brees said he'll take "a month or so" before making a decision on his NFL future.

Brees will compete in Sunday's Pro Bowl in Orlando before taking a month to unwind. At that point, the 41-year-old should have a clearer idea of his NFL future. "I'll kind of lay low for a little bit, get away and then assess," said Brees, who posted a career-high 116.3 quarterback rating in 2019, his 19th NFL season and 14th in the Big Easy. "I kind of have a process in mind." If he does return for a 20th season, the NFL's all-time leader in both passing yards and touchdowns confirms he'd only play for the Saints. With Teddy Bridgewater and Taysom Hill both headed for free agency and Brees at least entertaining the idea of retirement, New Orleans could conceivably be looking at an entirely new quarterback room in 2020.

If Hill really is integrated more will be hard to trust him too much. Of course could be some coach speak so we’ll have to wait and see.

Good to hear, and it's the first of many decision dominoes for the Saints this offseason (Bridgewater, draft, etc.)

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports impending free agent Drew Brees is willing to take a below-market deal with the Saints.

Brees has already said he is re-signing with the Saints, so it is just a matter of working out the details. Rapsheet expects Brees to settle for somewhere in the neighborhood of what he was making under his recently-expired two-year deal, which was $25 million per season. The Saints always need to get creative with the cap, so this will be a big help as Brees desperately seeks his second Super Bowl title.

Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson reports the Saints are "close to finalizing" a deal with free agent Drew Brees.

There was basically no question that Brees would return to New Orleans, but when he signed and how much he'd sign for needed to be worked out. Robinson reports that the deal can be agreed to as early as Tuesday, and we've already heard that Brees is willing to take a below-market deal to stay home. It's clear that Brees wants to do anything to make one more Super Bowl run with this group.

Saints re-signed Drew Brees to a two-year, $50 million contract.

Never in doubt. The full details have yet to leak, but the 41-year-old's contract likely includes a void in the event he hangs up his cleats in 2021. Brees was on record of wanting to make at least one more run with the team currently in place and he'll have a chance to do so on what's arguably a team-friendly deal. Taysom Hill's first-round tender remains a mystery since the all-around backup quarterback will be 31 if Brees plays out both years of his new deal.

Jenkins sure went after Brees for his comments.  Wonder what his response will be or if there will be tension in the locker room throughout the season now.

I'd bet its forgotten about pretty quickly. Probably mutual apologies and move on.

Doesn’t sound like it with Ed Reed comments, I’d be very surprised if Brees recovers from this, when he does apologize,  I just can’t see his teammates letting this go.
He already missed his chance to apologize and doubled down instead.  I respect his right to this view just as I respect (and fully support) Kaepernick but MAN, talk about tone deaf.  Read the room.

I believe they should do away with the anthem before sporting events.  Then they can find other ways to take a knee.

Actually a great solution but the NFL would never go for that.
Why not?  Playing the anthem isn't that big of a deal IMO and removing the controversy is the easiest solution.  Players can just take a knee during the coin flip or something.

I'd say at every turnover, but some teams could be exhausted.

I think NFL is too tied in with patriotism

Good idea. Maybe instead Roger can commission an Ode to the Shield?

IIRC, the DoD pays the NFL like $10 million to play the anthem and then additional monies for broadcasting recruiting commercials. That’s one reason I doubt they would consider dumping the anthem.

There are plenty of workarounds.  Captains could kneel at the coin toss. Or a team could kneel for their TD dance. Or both teams could kneel before the opening kickoff. Or they could add another song to be played before the game where players could kneel.

There are so many other options on this that it is actually mind boggling that it has gotten this far.

You’ll kneel when we tell you you can kneel doesn’t get the same message across.

They don't have to kneel if they don't want to.  No one is telling anyone when to kneel.  I just think if the anthem is causing controversy, remove the controversy.

Exactly. The league could really make an effort to make a positive impact. They could devote a portion of halftime for social awareness and causes. They could get a performer to play to support a cause each game. This seeking change and those protesting could end up getting heard more and becoming less disruptive. The point being, there doesn’t need to be the angst over the NA and perhaps more of the message would get out and heard.

Full apology:
"I would like to apologize to my friends, teammates, the City of New Orleans, the black community, NFL community and anyone I hurt with my comments yesterday. In speaking with some of you, it breaks my heart to know the pain I have caused.
In an attempt to talk about respect, unity, and solidarity centered around the American flag and the national anthem, I made comments that were insensitive and completely missed the mark on the issues we are facing right now as a country. They lacked awareness and any type of compassion or empathy. Instead, those words have become divisive and hurtful and have misled people into believing that somehow I am an enemy. This could not be further from the truth, and is not an accurate reflection of my heart or my character.
This is where I stand:
I stand with the black community in the fight against systemic racial injustice and police brutality and support the creation of real policy change that will make a difference.
I condemn the years of oppression that have taken place throughout our black communities and still exists today.
I acknowledge that we as Americans, including myself, have not done enough to fight for that equality or to truly understand the struggles and plight of the black community.
I recognize that I am part of the solution and can be a leader for the black community in this movement.
I will never know what it’s like to be a black man or raise black children in America but I will work every day to put myself in those shoes and fight for what is right.
I have ALWAYS been an ally, never an enemy.
I am sick about the way my comments were perceived yesterday, but I take full responsibility and accountability. I recognize that I should do less talking and more listening...and when the black community is talking about their pain, we all need to listen.
For that, I am very sorry and I ask your forgiveness.

I prefer to watch football on Sundays.   Actually I consider playing the anthem an annoyance, even though I love the flag and what it stands for.  As for a halftime performer and their causes, I leave my seat at halftime anyway.  I couldn't care less what they do at halftime.

Segue off your thought, have two separate instances, one dedicated to oppression, one to the National Anthem

"A moment of silence for those who have experienced racially inequality, oppression, or battle it on a daily basis."   Heck, you can even invite those to sit, stand, or take a knee if we really have to cater to these folks who must stand out from the crowd.

If it continues on as a joke, play the anthem while the players are in the tunnel.   It's a tired act now.

Grow up.

He could have easily deflected the question and said "What I really want to talk about is why people are protesting right now..." but he doubled down b/c his Grandfather was in a war. I was in the Marines during 9/11. Doesn't give me a pass to be unapologetic and tone deaf.

Lot of time til then. They actually spoke before Jenkins posted the video (but after he'd recorded)

"As I was trying to muster up the energy and find the words to address Drew Brees’s comments I recorded this video. Before I could post it, Drew reached out to me to discuss his point of view.
All in all, I’m still posting this video because it’s important for anyone who wants to consider themself an ally to know how these words and actions affect those who you want to help. Drew’s words during his interview were extremely painful to hear and I hope he rectifies them with real action."

Hats off to all those families that have served in the military. We have plenty of family members that have served . . . some are outraged about the kneeling, while others look at it that they fought to give people the right to kneel. So even within our family there is a divide.

Brees could very easily have deflected and said the country is going through a lot right now and people have a right to be heard. He could have said he supports the campaign / effort / his teammates / righting the wrongs of injustice / whatever. He could have even indicated he already expressed his position on the matter in the past but right now there are issues in this country far greater than football. Pretty much almost any other answer he could have given would have been better than the one he gave.

Brees has the right to have his own opinion of things and to be heard . . . but now was not the time to reinforce it with so many other people being enraged right now. Brees is overall a good guy. He's donated millions of dollars and supported New Orleans more than just about anyone. It's too bad this all happened, but it shows that even sensitive and influential people can still be viewed as insensitive and as part of the problem.

I'm right there with you that I just want to watch the game and not all the other fluff. However, that doesn't change that the players want a voice and a way to be heard. Up until now, the league really hasn't done a whole lot to try to address that. I don't know what the solution is, but I am pretty sure most people would agree it's not kneeling during the NA.

It was good that Brees walked it back. It was obvious that he didn't think about what he was saying.
I feel this , but I also remember that saying "When people show you who you are, believe them"

Doubtful he walks any of this back without the backlash, so he felt it at the time.

What a horrible human being this guy Drew Brees is. Gives MILLIONS to charity to help ALL people in his home state and around the world. This is just stupid to try and find fault with a guy who's never done a single thing unethical in the public eye.

You are kidding right? He's done some really shady stuff in the past

Good, charitable people can still be insensitive to, and benefit from education on, others' experiences and pain
I prefer to watch football on Sundays, not be preached to.  Aren't there other ways and other days to do this?
