Driver wants out of GB, Contract not re-done (1 Viewer)

Favre took a little less than 3 MONTHS after the Super Bowl to see if he wanted to retire or not. I can't believe the constant complaining on the board about that. If you believe this hindered the Packers one iota you're fooling yourselves.
I guess NFL minds like Chris Mortenson at ESPN need to have their heads examined then....and/or get better sources for their information.

I had a beer and a pizza with him and his wife in Waukesa a few nights after their blowout loss to the Rams in 01? 02?  He was still the #4 then and the hotel he was staying at had a bar that didn't get too many people in it, so no one besides me and my buddies recognized him.  He was totally cool with us hanging out with him for a while, talking Packers, Track and Field, etc.  We wanted to know what he thought of Bill Schroeder (we knew he was kind of a tool, just wanted to get his take) and we couldn't pry a bad word out of him although you could tell he wanted to say something.

Great guy.  After that day I've been the worlds biggest Driver fan.  Even my wife, who hates all things Packers, cheers for him.  The whole trade or release me demand seemed WAAAAY out of character.
Great story. Driver is definitely a class act. Great guy and a very good player.

Considering Mort has been off on nearly every report he has made concerning Favre's status this year...and it was an ESPN source that broke this probable bogus Driver story...yes..you might want to look eslewhere.

Ehhh.......Mort & Clayton are now the only two talking heads at ESPN I'll put any stock in. Well...Jaws too.Mike Smith I had as credible since he broke the Woodson signing before anyone else.

But after this jouranlistic missfire of his

He's worth more than the rest of the receivers combined, and is making less this year than Ferguson.
I agree. That's why I started hammering on this thread in the first place. Driver seems to me to be the consummate "team player", and the Packers seem to be substantially underpaying him. ESPN's talking heads over the past several days have had lots of positive things to say about Walker too (great guy, super talent, etc.), yet he is "T.O." in the State of Wisconsin. I agree that he got some poor advice in the way he handled his situation, but it's almost as though the Packers said "we don't CARE if you've substantially out-performed your contract. You agreed to minimum wage, so by golly, you're making minimum wage."Unless someone is looking for a "promotion" (starting job or increased role) or is just happy to have a contract somewhere, WHY would you want to go to Green Bay if you were a free agent? Seriously. That's not a "Packer" thing though....as the same could be said if ANY team in the league treated its players that way.

I'm on the outside looking in though, of course, so who knows what the "real" situation is. I'm just saying with Walker, Driver, Ahman Green and others, the view just doesn't look that great outside of Lambeau Field...... :(
Substantially underpaying him? He is a good guy...good WR...but nowhere near an elite guy. He got 4 million to sign...and another million the next year in bonuses. Looking to make over a mil this year and next...and his deal will get redone. Why would you want to go to Green Bay. Hell of a place to live...raise a family...and oh play for the most storied franchise in the league...state of the art facilities...be loved by all (if you do not f up).

Walker is the only one. Ahman stayed...wants to stay...so where are you getting that.

Treated players what way? Rewarding them for doing things the right way, but getting pissed when player's take their crap to the media? What team does not do that?

Walker is going beyond TO if what has been proposed is true about him starting this Driver crap.

Meanwhile, the Packers have been dealing with an issue with its other starting receiver, Donald Driver, who also is unhappy with his contract. Driver has two years left on his contract but believes he is underpaid. Driver’s agent, Jordan Woy, would say only that he has “had talks” with the Packers about Driver’s contract. Woy wouldn’t say whether Driver would go to the extremes that Walker is if he doesn’t get a new deal.

Driver is coming off one of his best seasons with 86 catches, 1,221 yards and five touchdowns. He has two years remaining on his contract that calls for him to be paid $1.36 million this season and $1.84 million in 2007, but he’s 31 years old, an age at which some skill-position players can decline quickly.

Packers' Driver says he won't hold out

Associated Press

4/29/2006

MILWAUKEE - Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver said Saturday he will be at the team's mini-camp next week and is not planning any contract holdout.

In his first public comments since an ESPN report Thursday that he had asked the team to restructure his contract or trade him, Driver said he had never made those statements and intended to fully honor his contract.

"I want to be a Green Bay Packer," Driver said at a charity pool tournament in Milwaukee. "I never said anything. I'm showing up for practice. Whoever said that story, they don't know anything because they never talked to me."

Driver also said he has had discussions with the Packers about a contract extension. He has two years remaining on his contract, which pays him a base salary of $1.36 million next season and $1.84 million in 2007.

The Packers open their first mini-camp under new coach Mike McCarthy on Friday.

"I've never been sad in Green Bay," he said. "The media writes what they want to write. That is just part of the game. You will see me at practice of Friday."

Driver said there was no timeline on completing his contract extension and he intended to play at least the next two seasons in Green Bay.
