not the extra 30............................ or so you've added since high school.  the kind that goes on your car. the donut wheel.

what's the general rule of thumb for mileage on those? 40-50 miles tops?

I wouldn’t do much beyond going to the nearest tire store, personally.

what if, like, you know.. you had other things to do and just didn't have time to go to a mechanic for a few weeks?

how many weeks would you push it?  would you drive your regular routines or beg rides/car share with your s.o.?

Skip the other things.  Seriously.  I know someone that drove on one for far too long and it went out on him and he crashed into a bus full of children and the whole thing blew up.

Not really.

But you get my drift.

yeah, but, after a long day at work what if you're really tired? and the next morning instead of driving to a mechanic you really want to sleep that extra 10 minutes?

it can't hurt to drive around for a month on a tire 1/5th the size of the rest of your tires? especially if it's an SUV and you do.. just a little highway driving.. every day, right?

Oh, well in that case then yeah it's fine.  Load the suv up with some added weight and have a few shots of vodka beforehand.  It'll be fine.

i feel like you're not listening to me.  it's just a little driving. it's not even that far and it's hardly even on the highway. and it's only been 3 weeks. nothing bad has happened. it's not like the car is just going to explode or something. if anything the spare will just go flat.

there's just not enough time to drop the car off in the morning, get a dealer courtesy ride to & from work and then pay like... 80 bucks for a new tire.

Why would you do this?

Does it even fit in the front passenger seat? Does it allow you to use a carpool lane? Is it good conversation? Does it buy any smokes?

Be reasonable with it.  I don't buy into the 50 mph tops thing...I'll go the speed limit.  I usually go over with good tires.  I've never driven on one for longer than a day or so.  Also, consider which wheel it's on.

Rear-wheel on a FWD car and I'm less concerned than, say front wheel on a FWD, or a rear-wheel on a performance RWD car...or an SUV, etc.

I took off all of my regular tires and now drive exclusively on donuts on a four wheels. All highway driving and 600 miles to and from work.  Not a big deal.

if you guys just want to make me feel bad about this, go ahead. but i am not participating in this conversation.

you can't make me do anything!

I drove with a mini-spare for a week. But I only had to drive 5 miles each way and I kept the speed under 40.

Also, why would you risk it? Not only are you endangering your life, but you're also guaranteeing that you'll need to replace the spare in addition to buying a new tire.

So ride a bike to work and address the other 'spare tire.'  #winning

I think you should just keep driving on it like normal and give us a daily update on it. What is the worst thing that could happen?

I'd hire someone from taskrabbit to take the car and get it fixed. Still sleep in the extra ten minutes.

Pro tip: if the spare-well in your trunk will allow it, buy a 5th rim from a junkyard and a cheapo fullsize tire at Walmart or something (they'll mount it for free).  Wala, full size spare.  Could be a lifesaver if you're on a trip.

I’d go at least 60,000 on it, then maybe replace it and combine trips and get an oil change at the same time. Should be good another 5 years after that.

Driving around on the tiny tire can not only cause a blowout, it can cause damage to your suspension, the axle it's on, and your differential.
