Dryer problem (1 Viewer)

Hoping someone can give me some ideas on fixing my dryer. Last week, the dryer ran all night on the auto-dry setting. Then I ran it on Timed and the clothes were still damp. So after some googling it said I should clean out the vents and also check the breaker and replace the thermal fuse. I did all of that and put one piece of clothing in there and the dryer got hot again and the auto dry worked as well. I thought problem solved. The next day I put a load of laundry in and again the auto dry did not advance and again the timed dry left clothes damp.

So the issue is, the dryer is not heating with a normal load of damp laundry but when I test it with one dry piece of laundry it works fine. Ideas?

You might need to clean off the moisture sensor. I had issues last year with mine and that's what I did along with making sure the vents were clear. Once I did that, it went back to normal and haven't had any issues since.

BTW when I opened the dryer I couldnt believe how much lint was inside. Scared the #### out of me.
Sounds like your vent is backed up. Make sure you clean out the vent on the dryer, then make sure the tube from the dryer to the wall is clean as well. Also, check and make sure the outside vent is clear. That should help.

Is the drum turning?  Heating element and thermal fuse are usually the culprits on older style dryers, but if it's heating when there's one shirt in there, makes me wonder if the drum isn't turning. That would still dry a single item, but would not dry a load of items, as they aren't getting rotated around. On the full load, is there still heat being generated?  If it's the vent (internally or externally), heat will still be generated, but the clothes won't dry because there's no airflow.

Sounds like its turning. I just ran a full load and the clothes were damp and I felt no heat. Removed everything but one piece of clothing and put it back on and it generated heat.

I'm guessing its a venting issue which I thought I checked everything last week. I'll take it all apart again on Saturday. Running this load for a second time now.

If the belt that turns the drum is broken, the pulleys may still be turning and making noise. Open it mid-cycle and see if clothes are tumbling. I still don't think a blocked vent would be the issue if it's generating heat at all, but I could be wrong on that.

This is my suspicion as well.  Had a similar problem a while back that was solved by clearing the vent from the wall to the outside of the house.  Old lint had clogged up between the laundry area and the outside.  Got a brush kit from Lowe’s for about $30 that worked great, had narrow flexible tubes that come of navigate the turns in the vent, could attach one end to a drill if hand-turning the brush wasn’t sufficient.  It was freaky how much lint was dislodged.  But the dryer has worked like a charm since.

in the old west they used to hang clothes on a line to make it dry off in the breeze it is cheap and easy and only costs you the price of string and from what i hear the string commodity market aint what it used to be so you should be able to get a deal take that to the bank brochahco

Yep definitely turning.

FYI no heat felt

Google and youtube are your friends in this situation.  Dryers are easy to fix with a little guidance.  I'd start w/ all the airflow, from inside the dryer all the way through the house to the outside.  Clean all of that.  Then check the belt on the drum.  Then the moisture sensor.  Then the heating fuse/element.

The flexible tube connects to a long metal tube then goes outside. I felt the vent outside and air is blowing out and stuck my hand in and no clog. I'll get a brush kit.

my dryer is pretty old but one time it ran out of coal maybe see if you have enough coal in the furnace area you can look through the salts in the door take that to the bank bromigo

Unhook the vent tube from back of dryer and see if you still have heat running it without the tube connected. If you don't, then next things to check would be the thermal cutoff (depending on your model) and the thermostat control.  Agree with the above..check your make/model on youtube. i.e. "Amana 1500 dryer not heating" or some such.

Except he lives on NYC. Cost of living is way higher than in the SWC so string is going to be extra expensive plus by now it's like 20 below all day and really hard to run string from the 85th floor of an hi-rise building unless you do it up and down but the clothes would still be frozen and have to be put in a dryer to thaw take that to the bank muchahco

one thing you could consider is creating a geothermal loop to create heat in your dryer it just requires laying a couple of hundred yards of tubing well below the frost line of the ground it is cheap and efficient and keeps you both cool and hot at all times of the year now just imagine how awesome your shirts would feel when you wear them knowing they were dryed by the amazing power of mother nature take that to the bank brochacho

And you cleaned the dryer vents? Can you put the cleaning brush/wire/whatever you're using all the way from the outside of the house into the inside and see it?

I would think if something was broken I would never get heat but the fact I get heat when one piece of clothing is in there and dont get heat when I have a full load in there means its a venting issue. I dont really know. I already changed the thermal fuse and cleaned the whole dryer out. Just ordered a brush and will clean the entire duct out this weekend and go over everything one more time.

Only the flexible tube. Just ordered the brush today and will do that this weekend.

if you have a gas dryer and no heat check out whether you paid your gas bill sometimes if you do not pay that bill for like six or seven months they shut off the gas these are just little tricks that the old swcer has picked up through the years and i am a pay it forward with knowlege kind of guy take that to the bank brochacho

If you're running a gas dryer and flammable material is flying back into the dryer cabinet, I wouldn't run it until you figure this out.
?? Isn't it normal for lint to accumulate in the dryer cabinet? Quick research says it is. What's not normal is that I never cleaned out the cabinet and they say you should clean it out once a year. I've had this dryer for 10 years.

how much total lint is in there because in some parts of asia there is a solid black market for lint they use it as an aphrodesiac is what i am told so basically you may be looking at retirement take that to the bank daddy brobucks

Ah.  I assumed you had it clean and then suddenly lint was blowing back in and accumulating heavily.  That makes more sense.

Any chance the fan on the dryer is just shorted out/covered in lint and wasn't turning?

:goodposting:   If you did this, then you could afford the geothermal thingy.

could also be the helsinki smash rod those things go out like it is there job take that to the bank bromigosabe

I'd start here but if you enter your model number it will give you much better advice.
This place is great, especially since the distribution center is like 20 minutes away so I can get same day parts

thermal fuse

solenoid

a bad thermostat
Yeah if it's not fuse could be the gas valve solenoid

@shadyridr you should have a small access port near the bottom of the dryer that you can pop off and see if there's flame or not.   If it's shutting off intermittently this could explain why 1 piece of clothes will dry but not a whole load.  If that's the case good chance it's the solenoid.   If you have a multimeter you can pop them out and test too

Pretty unlikely as the cutout reactor scram alarm would be sounding like swc'ers homicidal banshee with her cojones in a recluse spider infested overheated lint trap.

brohans for the record i love dryertalk and i salute the old shademan for bringing it back to this forum it has been too long and i am glad to see that have all moved past our prior dryer prjudices take that to the bank bromigos
