Duolingo app (1 Viewer)

Was wondering if anyone else has tried this. I am about an hour of lessons in. Seems pretty good. I am trying Spanish.

My wife was using it for a little while to re-learn Spanish. She was doing pretty well with it and then stopped - not because she didn't like it but got busy with other things. She's planning to get back into it. I think she liked it and from what I saw, it looked like a good app.

Thanks for reminding me of it. I was looking to learn a little more French before a trip last year but the app seemed a bit more in depth than what I was looking for. I wanted to get back to it to learn Italian but I forgot about it.

I like the small lesson size. I do 10-20 minutes each morning.

Seems like it would be good for conversation level

I tried to relearn spanish a few months ago, that phase lasted about 3 weeks.

The voice recognition is kinda wonky. And if a car drives by your house as you repeat a phrase it screws you up.

Yeah occasionally I have problems with it recognizing what I am saying.

I was doing it for a while. I liked it. Got busy and just kind of forgot about it. I keep saying I have to fire it back up.

used it for awhile and thought it was cool

then discovered google translate and man is that ever efficient for translation when needed.

I always thought I needed to know some spanish for when weak english speakers walked in the door for treatment... now with google translate I can have a basic conversation with someone seamlessly.

Even had a basic conversation with someone in Chinese the other day about their teeth.

Forget learning a language.

It's pretty awesome. I use it everyday for at least 15 minutes for French. I couldn't exactly read a book or discuss politics, but I can order food and talk trivialities.

HelloTalk is great too. It's basically an IM that pairs up people trying to learn languages. I've met and befriended a few people from France that were trying to learn English. It's quite helpful.

Actually the learning is good for you. As you get older (I am over 50) they say trying to learn new things helps keep your brain young.

Yeah if I can get basic conversational fluency I'll be pretty happy.

The world language teacher (guy speaks 7 languages) in my school says this the program to use. I'm dabbling in Italian now, just need more time to get it done.

So I looked at this more closely and you can definitely get pretty deep it seems. Including things I would think would be mostly for writing purposes. Pretty cool for free.

I've tried it for Italian for a trip that I'm taking this summer. Pretty nice setup - just need to get on more consistently.

It gets great reviews. I looked around a bit and the main complaint seemed to be the way it taught. There weren't all these grammar lessons they just threw you in. But if you think about it that's how you learn your native language. By hearing and repeating.

Isn't there some mode where you can compete against other people? Let's get a friendly FFA competition going for inspiration.
Looked at this. So you can add friends and apparently you can compete with them. Not sure how it works but PM me and we'll get it going over the next couple of days.

duolingo and learnbots For me with Italian. also, foreign language newspapers and a translation app to see what is being used.

For you italian learners, not to hijack, i consider myself now advanced.......any questions i can help with on The language? maybe start a teaching thread.....

NCCommish and I now are duolingo friends. He is crushing me right now on the weekly leaderboard, but I'm going to devote some time to catching up. Would be interested in adding more FBGs.

in. I'm leaving for a Germany trip in a week or so, so I'm trying to brush up a bit. I took 4 years of German in HS, but that was a really long time ago.

Just downloaded today. Won't have a whole lot of time to mess with it today but I'm going to try to dedicate 20 minutes every day. I doubt a week's worth of brushing up will make a huge difference, but it can't hurt and hopefully I'll be making more trips to Germany down the road.

Wilkommen. I hope I spelled that right.

I see SenorPipo has been busy. I am planning on finishing food and animals today I think I can retake the lead.

So put up 106 points today. Retook the weekly lead and the monthly. Look at me go. Got to level 5 and learned the following phrase - El mono es suyo. The monkey is hers. That will have to come in handy at some point.

lol some of the phrases are so bizarre.

So the streak continues. I have enough lingots to get a bonus skill. My choices are idioms or flirting. I think I'll give the local Latina population a break and skip the flirting.
