2011 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we plan to publish more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters.

With the labor uncertainty, there are more unanswered questions entering the summer than usual. The good news is that gives us some more time to discuss the merits of players without having to react (or overreact) to the smallest bits of news about a slight injury in practice, or coach speak. We'll have plenty of time for that when it comes (we hope).

In the meantime, as always we will post a list of players to be discussed each week. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discuss expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Dwayne Bowe, WR, Kansas City Chiefs

Player Page Link: Dwayne Bowe Player Page

Each article will include:

[*]Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

[*]Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads

[*]FBG Projections

[*]Consensus Member Projections

The Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

[*]Focus commentary on the player (or players) in question, and your expectations for said player (or players)

[*]Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"

[*]Avoid redundancies or  ... this should be about incremental analysis or debate

While not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to provide your own projections for the player (players):

Projections should include:

[*]For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Attempts, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

[*]For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

[*]For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

Now let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Methinks Bowe won't come close to the numbers he put up last year again. At least in the TD department. With a new toy to play opposite of him and Tony M. getting another year in at TE - I would expect Bowe to come down a little bit.

71/1053/8

I find it interesting that he played all 16 games, had TWO 13 catch games, and only managed 72 catches on the year. Add Baldwin and a staff that wants to get McCluster more involved and I think you will once again be relying on touchdowns. I don't have any projections but will be avoiding him at his ADP.

There aren't many players that I will be avoiding this year, but Bowe is one that I don't like at all at his ADP. Just too inconsistent to be counted on has my #1 WR. Much rather want to have him as my WR2, but he will be drafted before that.

73 rec, 1000 yards, 8TD

Interesting that his ADP is so high, yet everyone in this thread so far is down on him.

I'm down on him also. He reminds me a little bit of Braylon Edwards who was also a late 2nd round pick the year after his monster 17 TD season. There's just something about Bowe's personality that I don't totally trust. Only a gut feeling on my part, but I'm going to stay away.

All it takes is one guy to draft him at WR9. Someone will think he can have a big year like much of last year and that he will be become more consistent. I will pass.Again, I would love to have Bowe as my #2WR at around WR16-17. But I don't see his ADP falling that much.

I think this is one of those situations where you let somebody else in your league take him. I am a huge KC fan but I am very pessimistic heading into this season. I think you will not see what you saw out of Bowe and Cassel last year. The whole team was a nice story last year and great for us KC fans who have been beaten up for the last several years. However, that schedule last year was cake. This year it is brutal (check weeks 11-15). Let others in your league chase last years stats with these guys, even Charles a little for that matter. I hope I am wrong, but I just have a feeling it will be a long year and the fantasy production will suffer across the board. I don't hink Cassel is the long term answer and he will be more like what we saw two years ago instead of last year. I would honestly put Bowe as a low end WR2 and a decent WR3 this year. Either way it doesn't really matter because he will be on zero of my fanatsy teams.

I don't normally let shedules dictate my drafting, but again, check that schedule week 11-15 and tell me you want to count on starting Bowe at the end of your regular season and beginning of your playoff season.

I have him in my dynasty league along with Calvin Johnson. Should I try to move him since everyone seems to think he is being over valued? or do you think he'll be fine as a #2 WR?

FYI, you should be in the Assistant Coach forum for that question buddy.

Duplicating 2010 will be hard for bowe. He tallied 15 tds on just 82 catches.....quite an anamoly.

Cassel averaged 207 yards, ....a paltry number, but consider 1 missed game and another influenced by his aappendectomy. Those factors put him in the 230 range. Still, a very low number.

I thought they were pretty creative on offense.....until we heard the rumors that haley would take over playcalling duties from the departed weis......in which they seemed to regress those last two games.

I see bowe coming down as well......but I like his career path. He has taken guidance under fitzgerald, and really transformed his body. Seems to have his head on straight now, in what could be his last year in KC.

73 catches

1006 yards

9 tds

Bowe didn't even really come on until week 6. While his TD #s may be heard to replicate, his catches and yards stats from last year were not out of this world. Most of the FF world has been high on Bowe's talent since he was drafted, and things were finally falling into place over the last 2/3 of last season. I think Bowe builds on that, rather than regresses (except for TDs). Baldwin will be a developing player who won't eat into his #s significantly, and having another year in this offense and with Cassell should only benefit him. 84 catches x 16 ypc = 1344 yards, 10 TDs

I kept Bowe as my WR2 this year to team with Jennings. Not sure what will happen with Weiss leaving the team and rumors that Haley will be calling plays. Haley was really good with the Cards as an OC, so maybe that magic will be back this year in KC. Balwin should help take some of the coverage away and Bowe/Cassel have another year together.

Bowe could easily crash and burn this year or come close to last year. Maybe he will be productive each week and wont be streaky like last year. I dont but into scheduling to do my drafting, looking at last years defenses is a poor gauge as drafting a player based on the previous year's numbers. Injuries can happen and toward the end of a season a team might not have any thing to play for and lay an egg.

Not sure why Bowe needs a downgrade this year. Not sure why he should not replicate last year. His chemistry with Cassel only increased through the year. I think he will be a WR1 this year as well. I like him more in a redraft format than in a keeper format, and less in a dynasty format.

His yards will be a function of his reception/target rate. Last year it was around 55%. This year, I forecast it to be closer to 65%. I think he will get 8 targets a game with a similar 15 yards per catch stat. Thus:

128 targets for 83 receptions netting 1250 yards and 14 TDs.

He's in a contract year and is reportedly in even better shape than last year.

While I don't think he will repeat I would be ecstatic to have him as my WR2 and would be happy if I got him at the right price as my WR1.

Rated "Best Offensive Player" in Camp by beat writer Bob Gretz

WR Dwayne Bowe – what a remarkable distance Bowe has traveled in the last two years. In the first training camp of the Pioli/Haley Era, Bowe showed up so overweight and out of shape he took a diuretic to lose water weight and got caught in an NFL drug test. That four-week suspension may have proven to be a real turning point for the former No. 1 draft choice.

In 2011 training camp, Bowe showed up in shape, maybe in the best physical condition of anybody on the roster. His route running has been precise and he’s dropped only a handful of hundreds of passes that were thrown his way in practice. There were still those moments when Bowe lines up on the wrong side of the formation, but they are infrequent occurrences this summer. Bowe looks like he’s primed for another big season.

I'm really starting to warm up having Bowe as my number 2 receiver. Though, Its hard for me to ignore their tough schedule.

Would anyone rank him over Dez, Marshall, and Wayne in a standard format?

Another big year for him. While you can't predict TD numbers, he is the top red zone target and he showed he can beat double coverage last year.

1150 and 10 is the floor with him imo.
