Dynasty Joe Williams RB 49ers (1 Viewer)

Geez it seems like just yesterday people were in thread posting how Williams 'was hand picked' and Hyde was going to lose his job because he doesn't fit the system and Willaims was the love of all the coaches

I said he would be 5th this season, not next. Other than injury I don't see much of an opportunity for a guy in this office that can't block or catch. Just an opinion but seems like the coach has also cooled on him since he is also the OC and the man determining the depth chart
That's why I said "before 2018", because 2017 is indeed "before 2018".  Injuries happen all the time.  You might want to look up David Johnson, Jordan Howard, Jamaal Charles, and about a bajillion other RB's that started the season buried but finished as studs.

Shanahan supposedly wanted Williams really bad & that was somewhat intriguing from a fantasy perspective, but it doesn't make him any better of a prospect. Most HCs are better coaches than evaluators.

That may be the case here, although, I thought C.J. Beathard was a good pick & I'm sure Shanahan played a big part in drafting him.

But Shanahan pounded the table...
Should be interesting to see if Matt Breida actually moves ahead of Williams when week 1 arrives or if Shanahan sticks with the guy he wanted, ignoring performance.

What are you 12?  You don't have a response so you're hoping for an I-told-you-so?  I'm not even the one making a prediction, I am simply pointing out that it's possible things change.  If you want to be miss out on an opportunity feel free, you're only hurting yourself.

49ers placed fourth-round RB Joe Williams on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

A hot name this offseason, Williams was buried on the depth chart by the end of August, and it is likely the 49ers were looking for any option to stash the running back without burning a roster spot. With Williams and Tim Hightower gone, UDFA rookie Matt Breida is the back to own behind Carlos Hyde.

As big of an early supporter of Williams that I was, I have to say I don't see much future with the IR move. While you can downplay the age this was a scenario where an injury to Hyde would have opened the door. With the next class of RB's I see very little value at this point.

no I was just stating the likely outcome, I was not 'way too early'. so here is my told you so. All done

I’m a bit surprised how quiet it is in here. Williams on IR last year was a buzzkill after the hype of the Peter King story about Shanny saying Williams was the guy that kept him awake and that he’d worry about if they didn’t get him.

This offseason, Williams has admitted he took things for granted. He showed up to camp out of shape and 10 lbs overweight. He said he assumed a 4th round pick meant he was on the 53-man roster. Then he hurt his ankle and spent the year on IR, watching Breida take the complementary role Williams was supposed to fill. Shanahan too has spoken about how he told Williams that he must find the urgency again - that nothing is given in the NFL.

Williams got some positive reports from OTAs. He’s lost 10 lbs. He’s impressed Shanahan with his commitment and work ethic. Then in the first preseason game, Breida separates his shoulder. This is a prime opportunity for Williams to prove why Shanahan wanted him in the first place; why he dominated at Utah; why he averaged over 6 YPC. Remember, this wasn’t just a fourth round pick. This was a fourth round pick that the team traded up to acquire despite off-field issues in the past and an episode labeled as “quitting on his team” - the cardinal sin for the NFL.

And yet, no one is talking about him. There’s zero buzz. Plenty of folks are skeptical about McKinnon’s ability to handle a full workload, and it’s certainly possible that Williams ends up the best inside runner of the trio.  Shouldn’t that merit some discussion?

Williams injury and complacency led to Breida taking his job last year. Now Breida’s injury may open the door for Williams to cement a role. For the cost of your last bench spot, seems like a worthwhile bet to me.

I've thought the same thing.  Before the injury to Breida, at least in my mind, it seemed Breida was the clear cut lottery ticket to take late in your draft.  Now the injury muddles the situation since I don't want to draft them both and take up 2 roster spots.

So yeah, I'm curious to hear from others who they think is the better hand cuff/ late round flier between Breida and Williams if you're in the camp that McKinnon can't carry the load.

I invested heavily in Williams last year, picked up 8 shares that I still own.  :bag:

Have held on to him in all leagues because I didn't think that he got the opportunity to show what he could really do.

Although Shanahan was really high on him in 2018, he does tend to be fickle (as Trent Taylor owner's can attest) and seems to favor the bright shiny new toy, like McKinnon, over last year's love.

I like McKinnon but don't think he will hold up as a work horse and don't really see him being used that way. That leaves Breida and Williams to do heavy lifting. I don't know if Williams will win out, but I think he will definitely a shot this season to strut his stuff and given that his asking price is a lot cheaper, he is the one to take a flyer on (although given my history with him, it is probably expected that I would say that).

I don't think Williams is a threat to Breida, most of the camp talk is about the battle for RB3 between Williams & Mostert. The latest 53 man roster projection doesn't even have Williams on the roster. There is talk he could still be carried over using Rueben Foster's roster space while he serves his 2 game suspension, after that it's anyone's guess.

Uh, oh. Hope this is not serious for McKinnon, but if so we will be seeing Williams in action sooner rather than later.

Jerick McKinnon - RB - 49ers

Jerick McKinnon (right knee) will receive an MRI Sunday.

McKinnon stayed down holding the back of his knee following a hit Sunday. He was helped off by trainers and remained on the sidelines for the rest of practice. Although he was seen signing autographs on his way back to the locker room, the 49ers immediately announced that he'll go for an MRI on his right knee. The team is already without RB Matt Breida (shoulder) until Week 1. Stay tuned for updates.

49ers RB Joe Williams is out until at least Week 1 with a fractured rib.

He suffered the injury in San Francisco's second preseason game. On Sunday, coach Kyle Shanahan left open the possibility Williams would go on injured reserve, where he also spent his entire rookie year. Before the injury, Williams was getting outplayed by Raheem Mostert and Jeremy McNichols, among others. We suspect the ship has already sailed on Williams succeeding for the Niners.

The ship has already sailed? At this point for his dynasty owners it is like rearranging the deck chairs on The Titanic.

Are we really not going to talk about Jeremy McNichols?
McNichols has an outstanding athletic profile and was pretty productive in college.

Not a very powerful RB but he has some decent speed and wiggle to his game. I question his vision as despite his ability he isn't all that creative and can't really run between the tackles at the NFL level.

He failed to learn the Bucs play book and was let go by them after camp last season.

Lol, I meant he has no thread and he’s the de facto starter in a prolific system right now.

Can't believe this guy was ever a thing. He's really terrible.

RIP to all the wasted 2nd round rookie picks last offseason.

49ers waiving running back Joe Williams

Posted by Darin Gantt on August 31, 2018, 3:40 PM EDT

The 49ers are cutting bait on last year’s fourth-round pick.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the 49ers are waiving running back Joe Williams.

Williams spent his entire rookie year on injured reserve with an ankle injury, and had been bothered by a rib injury during camp this year.

He’s apparently healthy now, and his draft status alone will cause teams to see if he’s worth bringing in.

haa..you've got the wrong team..he's this year's Kevan Barlow ( Niners).coincidentally, Kyle Shanahan's his dad called him the best RB in the draft.doh! Williams is JAG. Breida is too small. McKinnon is nothing bit.it's Alf Morris.
Barlow had a 1000 yard season and 4000 career yards.

Well, McNichols at least landed on a practice squad, but still it appears that nothing s going on with Joe Williams:

Colts signed RB Jeremy McNichols to their practice squad.

McNichols was part of the 49ers' roster cuts over the weekend after managing a 23-73-3.2-2 rushing line this preseason. McNichols was an interesting draft prospect last year but failed to make the Bucs after being a fifth-rounder. The Colts, on paper, are a solid landing spot for McNichols. Sep 3 - 7:33 PM
