Now that the draft is SLOWLY winding down I wanted to do the same thing Steelers did earlier and discuss who I took, when I took them and more importantly, why I took them at the time. I actually made no trades during the course of the draft although I discussed many different options through-out the earlier rounds, and as a consequence, my team ended up looking very close to what I expected it would.1.01 - Ladainian Tomlinson - easy choice here. I did post my willingness to trade down out of this spot but only received one offer. Interestingly enough, it was an excellent offer that I would of taken, but the offer was rescinded before I ever even knew it had been made because I had forgotten to turn on email notifications for trade offers.2.14 - Fred Taylor - I fully expected to take at least 1 RB at the turn here but knew the pickings would be slim. I was hoping more guys like McNabb and some recievers would go in the 2nd round leaving me with some better options at RB in this spot but I ultimately ended up taking Fred despite the fact I'm not a big fan of his. He was the safer of the Henry's/Dunn's and I wanted to stay away from much older guys like Martin.Tried to trade down out of one of these spots figuring someone would love to jump on McNabb but didn't receive any good offers.3.01 - Donavon McNabb - I loved this pick at the time. I never take a QB early, but McNabb will be my starter for a number of years and I never expected him to last to me in the 2nd. QB's lasted A LOT longer in this draft compared to the others, so as far as getting value at this pick, I think it was slightly diminished. In hindsight, maybe I should of gone Chad Johnson instead, but there was no way to know that a guy like Bulger would still be around in the 6th.4.14 - Darrell Jackson - Easy choice here as I wanted to go young, solid WR's with a number of good years ahead in their career. I expect him to be a solid contributor to my team for awhile.Once again, tried to trade out, but in this case, the only offer I liked was contingent on Darrell Jackson being available and I wanted him for my own team. Received a lot of offers after the fact for Jackson, but I didn't think any of them were worth losing him.5.01 - Steve Smith - Considered Horn or Chambers here but Horn was too old for want I wanted my team to be, and there are a lot of questions about what's going to happen with Miami so I went upside. I'm not expecting Mushy numbers next year, but he is young and should put up top 15 or at least top 30 numbers for a number of years.6.14 - Deion Branch - Wanted another solid WR starter who was young and on a good team. Only downside is the Pats spreading the ball around so you never know which week he will get his numbers. This isn't a big problem though because I will probably HAVE to start him every week with the lack of RB's available to me.7.01 - Defense, Baltimore Ravens - I'm not the kind of guy to take a defense early either, but I wanted a top D and after looking at the other drafts, I knew none of the 3 I wanted would make it back to me.8.14 - Eddie Kennison - Needed a 4th Starter and loved that Kennison was overlooked by other teams. The guy scored only 6 fewer points than Darrell Jackson despite playing in 2 less games. I consider it value to get him 4 rounds later than Jackson even if he is on the wrong side of 30.9.01 - Chester Taylor - My lack of RB depth was really starting to show now. I felt that Taylor was one of the best of backups available at this point and that he could actually see some playing time.10.14 - Reche Caldwell - Great young guy who really took off and then got injured and now people seem to have forgotten him.11.01 - Rex Grossman - The Bears really showed some flash in the first 3 games before Grossman got injured. If they can add a topflight WR in the draft, this team could surprise on Offense.12.14 - Jason Elam - Like the Defense, I wanted a top kicker on an offensive juggernaught and didn't think the best ones would be available when things came back to me in the 14th.13.01 - Terry Glenn - Another WR who flashed something and then got injured this past year. He's a gamble, but since I won't need him to start, I can take the gamble.14.14 - Kenny Watson - Young guy with some skills in Cinci. If Rudi is gone, I don't think Perry getting the starting job is a lock.15.01 - Michael Turner - Backup for LT2, Jesse Chatman was long gone at this point, but he is a free agent I believe and could possibly be gone.16.14 - Antowain Smith - Another best of the backup RB's. Chris Brown has shown a tendency to be brittle, so maybe he'll see some playing time if the Titans don't replace him in the draft.17.01 - Johnnie Morton - Not a bad value WR for the 17th round. Plus I could use depth in case one of my "injured" WR's doesn't ever make it back from their injury.Overall, the draft turned out about what I expected from my slot. I believe I am fairly middle of the road, but with some excellent tentpole players to hopefully build around for the future. RB depth is obviously my weak area in the short term, but hopefully my top 3 QB and excellent WR's can make up for it. As it is, I think I'm one injury to my RB's from being a cellar team or if my guys can stay relatively injury free, I could have a top team. It's interesting looking back to see how many guys I took who were injured this past year, they just seemed like the best values at the time I picked them based on what they could do if they are healthy.
