Dynasty & Redraft: RB Charles Sims, Buccaneers (2 Viewers)

Any one know if he is good at pass protection and picking up the blitzer?
All draft profiles I read said he is one of, if not the best blocker in the class. They should feel comfortable leaving him in on 3rd down. All indications are he is a complete back, excited to see!

Unless Rainey fumbles the ball a bunch today, Sims play will most likely be minimal. Beyond this week, who knows ...

Sounds reasonable BUT.......Let's say they get Sims feet wet and on his first few attempts he rips one for 30 plus yards. At that point are the coaches going to let him play a little more or hold him back? I think if he looks great that might tempt them to let him be more of the game plan. Just my two cents. Look if he's ready to play, he's ready to play.

Charles Sims - RB - Buccaneers

ESPN's Adam Caplan reports the Bucs may wait until Week 10 to play RB Charles Sims.

Even though the Bucs activated Sims on Saturday, he may only be available in an emergency. We were never really expecting Tampa to completely unleash Sims in his NFL debut this week, but we wanted to see a few touches in hopes of an increased role for Week 10 against the Falcons' Swiss-cheese run defense. Look for Bobby Rainey to carry the load Sunday against the Browns.

Looks like way too risky to start this week. My hope is he gets at least a few touches and looks good enough that they want to get him involved next week.

Charles Sims - RB - Buccaneers

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Charles Sims will not play Week 9 against the Browns.

Sims will either be inactive altogether or merely be the emergency No. 4 back behind Bobby Rainey, Mike James, and Marcus Thigpen. So, even with the Bucs activating Sims from short-term I.R. Saturday, we'll have to wait until Week 10 against the Falcons to see the 69th pick in May's draft. We still advise adding Sims in all 12-team leagues. Rainey will be a high-upside RB2 on Sunday.

Yup. Had to free up a spot on my bench for him and now he's in my starting lineup even though he's not active.

Rough week with Gio, Fjax, Bryce as my only other RBs. I'd rather take a 0 then drop one of those guys just to get a few points by picking up and starting someone like Crowell or Turbin.

Rotoworld:

Bucs GM Jason Licht said Charles Sims is very likely to make his NFL debut in Sunday's game against the Falcons.

Sims did not dress in Week 9 as the third-round rookie had limited practice time under his belt. The coaches should be much more comfortable with him this week. We'd still expect Bobby Rainey to start and handle the majority of touches if Doug Martin (ankle) sits, but Sims should mix in on a lot of passing downs to then begin to earn more base work from there. He remains a must-stash as a running back that could be featured toward the end of the season.

Link? There's at least a half dozen scouting reports on the first page of this thread. Some describe the actual issue with his technique; others dismiss him as horrible or disinterested. None describe his pass protection as you do.

Cool, he held his own at Tuesday practice during the Senior Bowl.

Thanks for activating him off the IR and then not playing him, Lovie!
Was this the week they had to activate him or shut him down for the year? Not sure what the exact timetable is.
No, they have 21 days from the time he starts practicing; and he only started practicing last week.

Makes ZERO sense to activate him from IR, then not activate him for the game. If you're not going to play him, keep him on the IR list for now; opens up a roster spot for someone else.

Wouldnt this just be an rbbc with two other rbs on a ####ty team?
Or it could be like Jacksonville where a talented guy emerges.
true but hes gonna start off slow due to the injury.and i also think rainey is talented. I have no clue wtf happened to martin
Imagine Martin could be an inactive if/after Sims proves healthy for a couple weeks.

It really wouldnt be surprising if Tampa started all the Martin rumors to get a draft pick. Possible no one even offered one.

This is Lovie the mastermind at his best. Reminds me of Singletary running the Niners giving Alex Smith the business after a pick, "You, you go make touchdowns. You Quarterback! You no make turnovers!" I'm surprised this strategy didn't work. I am always wary of defensive minded coaches. Aside from Rah Rah speeches, I'd rather have an ex-QB or offensive oriented coach, someone that would be good at chess.

I didn't know Singletary was Asian?

I'm pretty sure he's not. He pulled his pants down during a rah rah speech. Never heard of an Asian doing that before.

Hmm, this seems strangely familiar from somewhere....

Oh yeah, this past week when the claim was that Sims would likely play against the Browns yesterday.

Maybe they had Sims in practice and he still needed to kick out rust from his game. Potentially they saw that he needed to get back up to speed with pass pro and the gameplan. Possibly he just wasn't physically ready yet.

There are plenty of reasons he could have been activated but not made active for the game. Until we hear more, here are my assumptions on Sims going forward without any proof whatsoever:

  • Solid, talented back in both run and pass game
  • Current Bucs backs haven't gotten it done -- Martin has been unimpressive, Rainey has been serviceable but not the answer either.
  • Lovie Smith and company look like they are ready to lean on Sims as "their guy"
  • That said, it is likely Sims will be in an RBBC if and until he clearly shows his skills
  • Unless we hear anything to the contrary, it's highly likely Simms will be eased in over the next game or so to get his full-speed reps
  • Sims still has big upside for rest of year on a team that's looking for any offensive spark

Very possible until you realize they activated him after seeing him in practice all week. If they had any concerns after a full week of practice whey in the hell did they even activate him when they didn't even have to? Just stupid Lovie Smith stuff.

A lot of something is being made of nothing.

They activated him because they were considering playing him. They decided they wanted to wait a week to give him more practice time. Perfectly logical.

I agree. Nothing to see here. So we wait a week or so. Big deal. Personally, I'm used to waiting. I own Calvin Johnson and Josh Gordon.

Waiting a week didn't bother me. It was the way the situation was handled that I thought was really bizarre. Until I factored in Lovie Smith being the head coach and him having a history of doing odd things. Then it all made perfect sense. :)

True, the Bucs could have had more time to place him on an active or inactive list -- but not sure why it makes any difference.

As I understand the rules, a player on the IR/DtR list can't start practicing until 6 weeks after being placed on the IR/DtR list. Once that 6 week period elapses, he can return to practice for a period of no more than 21 days, and the club can start placing him on active/inactive lists any time in this period as long as 8 weeks have elapsed since the time he was placed on the IR/DtR list (it's this last bit that's a little fuzzy to me)

Either way, Sims was activated after 8 weeks of the season on the list, having already 1 week of practice under his belt. What would the difference been if they had activated him next week instead of this week? He still would have been subject to the 21 days. Why not activate him at the earliest possible point (they put him on the DtoR list so they clearly wanted him as part of the team again), and start practice until they were comfortable with him being placed in the game?

Seems like the team is doing the sensible thing, and just thought he wasn't ready.

I don't think there's much doubt about it if Rainey/Sims are healthy, but....

SKILL
Doug Martin - RB - Buccaneers
ESPN Bucs reporter suggests Doug Martin (ankle, questionable) could be the third man in a two-back rotation for the rest of the season.
Even if Martin's ankle is healed up, he could very well be behind both Bobby Rainey and Charles Sims. Martin has averaged a brutal 3.36 YPC over the last two seasons, also struggling in pass protection. Inherited by this Lovie Smith regime, he was on the trade block at last week's deadline. Martin is a drop candidate in 10- and 12-team formats.

Then again, Lovie is considering going back to 35 year old Josh McCown on a 1-7 team....

And the same Lovie that felt QB (and not defense & completely abandoning the run in the 2nd half when Rainey was running all over CLE) was the problem in their Week 9 loss.....
