Redskins' Jeremy Sprinkle: Next man up at tight end

Vernon Davis (concussion) won't suit up Sunday against the Patriots.

Jordan Reed (concussion) is also sidelined. This means Jeremy Sprinkle should play a near every-down role in this brutal spot. The Patriots have allowed one offensive touchdown since the Super Bowl and now will face off against Colt McCoy and company. The Redskins are currently implied to score a slate-low 13.5 points.

Jordan Reed (concussion) ruled out for Week 5.

Coach Jay Gruden said Reed will be back at some point this season, but the return doesn't seem particularly imminent. Vernon Davis (concussion) is also sidelined. This means Jeremy Sprinkle could play a near every-down role for the Colt McCoy-led Redskins offense. Opportunity rules all in fantasy football, but the passing game couldn't ask for a worse matchup than against the Patriots. Sprinkle remains nothing more than a thin streamer option.

Redskins selected Arkansas TE Jeremy Sprinkle with the No. 154 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

Sprinkle (6’5/252) shared time with Hunter Henry before emerging as a full-time player in 2016, posting a 33/380/4 (11.5 YPR) receiving line as an 11-game starter. PFF College charted Sprinkle with only five drops among 72 catchable targets over his final three seasons. Lost in the shuffle in this loaded tight end class, Sprinkle has long arms (34 ½"), huge (10 3/4"), soft hands, and respectable 4.69 speed, and was one of the top pass-blocking tight ends in college football. Sprinkle also offers special teams experience, which will be his ticket to an NFL roster spot initially. Long term, he could become a Ryan Griffin-type No. 2 tight end.

Pro Football Focus compared Arkansas TE Jeremy Sprinkle to Dolphins TE Julius Thomas.

"Sprinkle, like Thomas, hasn’t displayed the lateral strength to maintain ground when run-blocking," writes the outlet, adding that "oth provide adequate technique in pass protection and can be a reasonably dangerous red-zone weapon with above-average ability at quarterback." Not everybody is down on the 6-foot-5, 252-pounder's blocking prowess, though, with an NFC South regional scout forwarding the belief earlier in the evaluating process that Sprinkle is more adept at blocking than fellow TE Jake Butt, who figures to land several rounds ahead of Sprinkle in the draft.

An NFC South regional scout believes that Arkansas TE Jeremy Sprinkle is a better blocker than Michigan TE Jake Butt.

Butt will almost certainly be drafted ahead of Sprinkle, but the NFC South scout in question doesn't see their pro potentials as a cut-and-dried matter. "I think Sprinkle is a much better blocker and he's got more of an NFL body type," the evaluator said of the 6-foot-5, 252 pounder. NFL Media's Lance Zierlein writes that Sprinkle "should be a safe pick and quality starter in the league." During his final season at Arkansas, the tight end logged a 33-380-4 receiving line.

TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline says Arkansas senior TE Jeremy Sprinkle "will be under-drafted" but predicts that the prospect "could eventually develop into a Sunday starter."

"...scouts are impressed with his overall game," Pauline wrote. "His blocking and disciplined route running against Mississippi helped spark the Arkansas offense all evening. And when the ball is thrown in his direction he makes the catch." The 6-foot-6, 255-pound Sprinkle has studied tape of Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski. He has only 19 catches in seven games this year as the Hogs have funneled more passes to their deep receiving corps.

According to Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema, NFL scouts are "chomping at the bit" to be around senior TE Jeremy Sprinkle.

"We’ve actually had a lot of success at that position and I think he’ll turn out to be one of the best," Bielema writes. That is an understatement. Hunter Henry is making a name for himself in just his rookie season after being a second-round pick. Productive young tight ends are difficult to come by in the NFL. A.J. Derby continues to be on the Patriots roster. Sprinkle looked great last year and has only continued that promise, catching 18 passes for 194 yards and four touchdowns.

ESPN's Alex Scarborough noted that "[Arkansas coaches] say [senior TE Jeremy Sprinkle is] better after the catch than [Hunter] Henry."

"[Sprinkle] has to work on some of the nuances of his game," Scarborough wrote, "but if he does that, then there’s no reason to believe he can't be an All-SEC player by season’s end." Last season, the 6-foot-6, 255-pounder caught 27 passes for 389 yards and six touchdowns. That came with Hunter Henry taking the bulk of the work at tight end for Arkansas. Henry was drafted by the Chargers in April. With the deck cleared, this will be Sprinkle's show in 2016.

Former Arkansas QB Brandon Allen says senior TE Jeremy Sprinkle is "going to be unbelievable."

The hype train has begun for Hunter Henry's ballyhooed backup. "I can see him being kind of like Hunter," Allen said. "He’s taller and longer than Hunter, and can run better than Hunter. He may not be as big and physical as [Henry] is, but Sprinkle can be a big-time player. The style of offense and how we use our tight ends, I think he could be extremely successful this season and then get a chance at the NFL." The 6-foot-6, 255-pound Sprinkle has studied tape of Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski. "He’s long," said HC Bret Bielema. "He’s athletic. He can actually run faster than Hunter, even though Hunter doesn’t want to hear that." Sprinkle tied for No. 4 in the FBS among TEs with six TD catches last year. "Jeremy is very talented," said offensive coordinator Dan Enos.

So anything to see here? Picked him up in dynasty just because I remember he had some pre-draft buzz and finally has a situation where he may be starting. Seems like this week vs. Miami could be a decent chance to show something, but obviously the team is a mess.
