[DYNASTY] Rookie drafts... (1 Viewer)

It's not just (or even mainly) the weight.  It's the rumors of coasting on talent, the lackadaisical attitude over the last two months, the (supposedly bogus) drug test rumors, etc.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Do you honestly believe that a guy could coast through on talent alone and have the kind of success that White has at USC and keep Reggie Bush off the field half the time? IMO, that is completly irrational.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Well, I think it's clear that he did "get by" on his talent while at USC. He is very talented, no question about that. But even before the combine it was pretty much accepted that he didn't like to work out. The very first line in the PFW Draft Guide about his negatives is "Has a soft body and does not like to train and condition." Later it states "Not a great worker."The questions are (1) will his talent alone allow him to be as successful at the NFL level if he doesn't change his work ethic? or (2) will he be required to change his work habits to be successful in the NFL? And if it's the latter, will he actually change his work habits?

A hamstring tear on a guy who doesn't like to work out is a red flag. Especially one who carries so much wieght whether he's in shape on not.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
It does not look like Norm Chow agrees with your assessment or maybe more directly PFW's. I'm sure White does not have Jerry Rice like work ethic, but something gives me the impression that if he had never torn his hammy and woked out like the pundits wanted him to. We would not even be having this dicusion.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
How do you know whether or not Chow agrees with PFW's assessment? For all we know Chow agrees with them completely but thinks that White still has the talent to overcome the negatives. PFW did say that he had top 10 talent. But we all know that top 10 talent doesn't always get you to where you want to go.Anyone that has seen what happened with him over the last two months and doesn't believe that it has any bearing whatsoever is truly in fantasyland.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Chow has been quoted as stating White is the most misunderstood player in the 2006 draft. That sounds to me like a rather distinct disagreement with the assessment.

I was pretty shocked that the guy picked Addai here as well...

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Im not. He is in one of the best offenses in the league. Has the best chance to start of ANY rookie RB.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Looking at the "What's 1.01 worth" thread from a few weeks back, people were selling the farm and their unborn children for Bush. I won't say Addai is a mistake, but if you want him that bad trade down a spot or two and get some additional 1st round picks or start worthy players.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Here's what 1.01 is worth. I just traded it - my team is not good, especially at the the QB position. I get:

#2

#6

Roethlisberger

Dillon

#24

Driver

I give:

#1

#5

No brainer deal for me really, but I'm stuck taking Maroney at #2. I didn't expect him to give me Dillon, but when he mentioned it I liked it.

I give up Reggie Bush, but I'm getting two starters out of the deal here in Big Ben and Dillon/Maroney. At 6 I have many options as well. Basically I moved down two spots and picked up #24, Dillon, Driver, and Big Ben.

He was able to do the deal because he's the two time champ and has a loaded team - LJ, Tiki, Edge at RB, so he can take this chance and get rid of some depth.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
So you got Roethlesberger

Dillon

Driver

and a 2nd

To move down two spots in a rookie draft, I hope you lubed your buddy first.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Outside of Roeth, I wouldn't consider any of that special talent from a dynasty perspective. If you like Bush, that's a small price to pay long term. Short term, Dillon/Maroney wins. Long term, Bush > Dillon/Maroney if Bush is better than Maroney. In addition, it moves the guy into position to take the 5th rookie back. I'm not a L White fan, but if you need RB help you can do a lot worse. I typically play long term - I'd take Bush.

Quite a few gomers from this board:

1.01 - Reggie Bush, RB, NO

1.02 - Vernon Davis, TE, SF

1.03 - DeAngelo Williams, RB, CAR

1.04 - Lawrence Maroney, RB, CAR

1.05 - Matt Leinart, QB, ARI

1.06 - Vince Young, QB, TEN

1.07 - LenDale White, RB, TEN

1.08 - Joseph Addai, RB, IND

1.09 - Jay Cutler, QB, DEN

1.10 - Santonio Holmes, WR, PIT

1.11 - Chad Jackson, WR, NE

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
The big three..... you will find , at least from what I've gleaned so far, that people have very definite opinions on Leinart, Young and Cutler. For as many Young proponents there are, there are quite a few people who think he'll bust. Some think Leinart has landed in the best situation, and love him in AZ. Others think Cutler will be the best of the three. I have my opinion, but don't want to get this great thread (which should be pinned) off topic. Bottom line..... take the guy you like best. It's a crapshoot.

Ask Maurice Clarett. He was one of the best college RB's...his freshman year & helped lead OSU to a national title. Who knows whether he 'coasted' on talent alone there, but it sure the hell was apparent he couldn't coast in the NFL.Just as someone has every right to say White will succeed in the NFL, someone else has legit reasoning to believe he'll fail.

I have to comment as a Jets homer.... Leon Washington is going VERY early, IMO. Granted, this is about the future, being a dynasty thread, but the Jets still have Houston, the only real between the tackles RB, Blaylock, who is very much like Washington, more of a prototypical 3rd down back, and the UDFA Dontrell Moore to boot. Askew also got some carries last year, and not as a FB. He wasn't awful.

Are people gambling that Washington, who is a hair under 5'8" might be Martin's eventual replacement? I thought he'd be a nice sleeper in my 16 team dynasty leagues in the 5th round or so..... but I'm watching him go in the second round of some 12 team IDP leagues!

Before Norwood? In an IDP league, taking Washington in the second round is a wasted pick. Dynasty or not. But..... I just read that NFL.com called him the 5th best FF RB this year.... which could explain this.... um... er... "misconception".

Washington is a nice 3rd down back, but my bet is on Houston to become the starter.

I have to comment as a Jets homer.... Leon Washington is going VERY early, IMO.

I thought he'd be a nice sleeper in my 16 team dynasty leagues in the 5th round or so..... but I'm watching him go in the second round of some 12 team IDP leagues!
Running Back + dynasty league = drafted early

I should have said that NFL .com called Washington the 5th best ROOKIE RB.... but I still find that laughable. The Jets have Martin.... Blaylock, a pretty good 3rd down RB, Houston (I don't think he's the RB of the future, but he has the best shot of the RB's on the roster) Washington and now Dontrelle Moore. I think people are looking at his 4th round status and over valueing him. I'd trade Washington AND Blaylock for Houston straight up, right now. That's only because I think Houston has an outside shot of being Martin's long term replacement, but even Houston is a long shot for that. The Jets' RB of the future is in college right now. The Houston detractors say he isn't a big play threat. News flash.... Martin hasn't been one either. Houston can't hit the outside the way Martin could, but he runs between the tackles better than Martin could as well.

Take any Jets rookie RB late. The franchise RB isn't on the roster yet.
