Wow...poor ax man got axed
That's the thing...how many times does someone leave a team with animosity, go to a division rival, and then return to be embraced by his team and the fans once again? When Trot returned for the veteran minimum, no one expected him to play much, and then came in and once he took over as the starting MLB again, the Eagles run D improved by leaps and bounds. He's obviously not the same player anymore and Gaither is, most likely, an upgrade, but I hate when the team loses emotional vocal leaders.Writing has been on the wall for this move since January.Eagles management, in so many words, has called him a fat, slow, old man with bad knees and poor conditioning this year. Obviously harsh, but if Gaither, Spikes and Gocong were ready and healthy and Daniels/Bradley looked at all competent, Trotter wasn't making it to the regular season. For Trotter's sake, it's a shame that both stints with the Eagles have ended so poorly. He was a solid and often underrated player.
Really the writing as been on the wall, "out of nowhere" would be the least likely way I would describe itThat came out of nowhere. Hope Gaither can be a consistent three down MLB, something Trotter no longer was.
maybe just maybe if he doesnt catch on with another team he will end up with a position on the team sorta like Douglas did.For what its worth, he may actually be retiring. He and the Eagles are having a joint press conference at 1pm
I'd be surprised if that's the case. I think it is Gaither & then Bradley if Gaither is not up to the task. Bradley has been a monster this off season & has some good years ahead of him. I think Gaither is a bit over rated, but has a year in the system and that can't be discounted. Loved Trot but he has zero range anymore. He couldn't cover Toniu Foniti at this point. Buyer beware. The ESPN article suggests Spikes will move into the middle, but I think that's conjecture on the writer's part.
What I meant is there was literally no buzz, speculation, conjecture that this would happen, particularly now. All you heard through camp were things like how Spikes and Trotter were like the same person, couldn't wait to play together, blah blah blah.So while the writing may have been "on the wall", today's news was still stunning to the average Eagles fan, so in a way, yes, it did come out of nowhere.Really the writing as been on the wall, "out of nowhere" would be the least likely way I would describe itThat came out of nowhere. Hope Gaither can be a consistent three down MLB, something Trotter no longer was.
Hey LHUCKS, I agree with you conceptually, but in this case, from what I hear from a buddy who is a beat writer, this move was actually in place for months. Trot apparently had an agreement with Reid that if the coaching staff thought he wasn't able to play at a high level and was at risk of being cut or demoted, that they would do their best to waive him early to give him time to latch on with another team. While being cut is still being cut, I think the Birds did right by Trot in whatever small way they could after deciding his play no longer warranted a starting gig. This is where management says "it's an unfortunate part of the business"...yet when a player is asked to play with an injury the management/coaching states "it's for the love of the game - being a good team player."I'm glad these players have agents to watch their backs.
If this is true I could see Donovan running and tattletalling, he's quite the sensitive man.trotter was telling people at the carnival to trade their 5 jersey for a 4. While I love the idea, that probably didn't sit well with management.
How old is your son? If he is a young lad then I really wouldn't take issue with what Trotter said.I was there. He told it to my son.
WARNING!!! WARNING!!!trotter was telling people at the carnival to trade their 5 jersey for a 4. While I love the idea, that probably didn't sit well with management.
Are you sure you heard him correctly? Maybe he said "trade your 5 jersey for a 54."trotter was telling people at the carnival to trade their 5 jersey for a 4. While I love the idea, that probably didn't sit well with management.
That's good to hear...Trot played hard and the original article in this thread gave the perception that the Eagles disrespected years of loyal service.Jason Wood said:While being cut is still being cut, I think the Birds did right by Trot in whatever small way they could after deciding his play no longer warranted a starting gig.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Trott and Reid had a personal sit down last evening to discuss the decision. There is a joint press conference being held at 1 this afternoon. This thing is being done with class from both sides. I wish Trot well but he is a very limited player at this point. That's good to hear...Trot played hard and the original article in this thread gave the perception that the Eagles disrespected years of loyal service.Jason Wood said:While being cut is still being cut, I think the Birds did right by Trot in whatever small way they could after deciding his play no longer warranted a starting gig.
Yea Trot is good against the run but is slower then Drew Bledsoe.Wow, all I heard from Iggle fans this year was how awesome Trots and Spikes were gonna be...tearing up everyone's running game...yadda yadda.and now that he's released it's...he was washed up and clearly finished and so simple to see that this move was coming. With that said, I will admit that the moves the the Iggle FO have made have been pretty shrewd. So I'll assume he is kaput...I'm sure Eskin will be spinning the same yarn...I saw this coming, Trotter stinks, Andy Reid is awesome...
I'm not going to pretend like I saw it coming, and to be fair the only one who did say that is Dr. Jene and he's not an Eagles fan last time I checked (but he is an IDP guy so he would pay more attention to the LB situations of note). As I said earlier, as a FAN I was bummed to see the Eagles jettison Taylor, Vincent, Douglas, Trot (the first time), Barber, Kirkland, etc...but each and every time it was the right move. There's no way the Birds would release him in late August if they didn't think he was a liability at this point. I wish he were still an impact player, but sometimes the truth hurts.Wow, all I heard from Iggle fans this year was how awesome Trots and Spikes were gonna be...tearing up everyone's running game...yadda yadda.and now that he's released it's...he was washed up and clearly finished and so simple to see that this move was coming. With that said, I will admit that the moves the the Iggle FO have made have been pretty shrewd. Yeah ok. I'm sure that's all you heard after both Saints games last year. Trotter's coverage skills and lack of range have been as hot a topic this off season as any. Johnson fired a shot over his bow with the weight comments right after the season ended and it was widely speculated then that Trotter's days may be numbered. Hey, never let the facts get in the way of a good story.Wow, all I heard from Iggle fans this year was how awesome Trots and Spikes were gonna be...tearing up everyone's running game...yadda yadda.and now that he's released it's...he was washed up and clearly finished and so simple to see that this move was coming. With that said, I will admit that the moves the the Iggle FO have made have been pretty shrewd. if you want to group all fans together then go ahead...but there are a few of us that were expecting this to happen...just frequent the IDP forum and it wont be hard to see....but then again IDPers are a different breed!!Wow, all I heard from Iggle fans this year was how awesome Trots and Spikes were gonna be...tearing up everyone's running game...yadda yadda.

he is being groomed to take over for trotter, will that be next yr? I dont know...but gaither has been getting time in the nickle something that trotter doesnt...so i would say he has nice upside as a possible 3 down LBer, just look at what trotter does in that scheme playing basically just 2 downs
IF spikes lands on the Weak Side in philly then imo Trotter is the odd man out(i dont see that happening yet..soon just not yet)...so if you are correct and Spikes lands at WLB it would most likely shake out asWLB Spikesi can't see Spikes as SLB in Philly's scheme, in the Buffalo one he was put there only after he was hurt.
A healthy spikes is more of a Middle/Weakside solution.
MLB Gaither
SLB Gocong
with Trotter used in a situational role...i just dont see it ending up that way...only time will tell
so it hasnt been all love and hugs with regards to the trotter/spikes pairingFirst official word from Andy Reid. For now, it appears nothing is certain except that Trotter's playing time gets cut way back (if he returns) while Spikes will have a role in the nickel/blitz packages. Reid didn't commit to a starting position for Spikes.
Admitting that the Eagles did not get enough out of their linebackers last season, Reid said that all three starting positions were "wide open," including middle linebacker.
He said Takeo Spikes, acquired in a trade with Buffalo on Monday, could start at any of the three positions and would be part of Jim Johnson's blitz package. But he acknowledged that the Eagles are counting on Spikes to be at full strength more than 18 months after having major surgery on his left Achilles tendon.
Spikes played for the Bills last season but was bothered by a nagging hamstring injury in his left leg, likely a result of the Achilles injury.
Reid agreed with Jeremiah Trotter's assessment earlier this off-season that Trotter needed to slim down for 2007 to alleviate pressure on his aging knees. He also said he would like Trotter to play only about 60 percent of the defensive snaps, rather than the 75 that he played last season.
Omar Gaither, Dedrick Roper and Chris Gocong, who Reid says now weighs 260 pounds, likely will be in the mix at linebacker, too.
"That's a position that we need to play better at," Reid said. "I'm not making promises to anybody right now. That's open competition there."
Sorry I'm not getting this. What does he mean by this?trotter was telling people at the carnival to trade their 5 jersey for a 4. While I love the idea, that probably didn't sit well with management.
McNabb is #5, Kolb is #4.Sorry I'm not getting this. What does he mean by this?trotter was telling people at the carnival to trade their 5 jersey for a 4. While I love the idea, that probably didn't sit well with management.
Since he's washed up. iggle fans should hope he lands with the Gints, no?Shall we start discussing where he may land?Saints?Lions?Broncos?(gulp) Giants?
Fine by me. He'd be reunited with Spags. Exactly where would he play in NY? He may be best suited to an inside spot in a 3-4. Maybe Pats? They coaxed a servicable year out of Seau. If anyone can wring value out of an over the hill defensive player, its Belichick. I wouldn't mind seeing Trot get a shot at a ring with New England.Since he's washed up. iggle fans should hope he lands with the Gints, no?Shall we start discussing where he may land?Saints?Lions?Broncos?(gulp) Giants?
I may be wrong, but aren't the Lions playing the Tampa-2 defense? And doesn't the Tampa-2 defense hinge on speedy LBs? So I would cross them off the list.Shall we start discussing where he may land?Saints?Lions?Broncos?(gulp) Giants?
Oh right. Thanks.McNabb is #5, Kolb is #4.Sorry I'm not getting this. What does he mean by this?trotter was telling people at the carnival to trade their 5 jersey for a 4. While I love the idea, that probably didn't sit well with management.
yeah it really has a sad tone and yet is very classy....trotter has nothing but good things to say about reid the organization the fans and cityreally sucks watching this![]()
trotter just got done now dawkins is taking the mic

I think most Eagles fans were hoping that Trotter was back to form and if so, it would have been fun to see him and Spikes tear it up. But it was obvious that he isn't the same player he was and as Jason said, it's disappointing, but not surprising.I'm not going to pretend like I saw it coming, and to be fair the only one who did say that is Dr. Jene and he's not an Eagles fan last time I checked (but he is an IDP guy so he would pay more attention to the LB situations of note). Not an Eagles fan, Woodrow, as you know, but follow the defensive side of the ball with an almost stupid passion. Those of you who don't play in IDP leagues but follow defensive football really should come over to the IDP forum when you get a free moment now and then. Obviously the discussion slants toward IDP leagues, but the IDP conclusions are made after close consideration and discussion of the team's scheme and defensive philosophy, player skill set and depth chart. We've been reporting on and pimping Gaither from within five minutes after he was drafted last year. We've broken down the Spikes-Trotter-Gocong-Gaither situation since Spikes signed. If you scroll through the FBG news blogger, it really is apparent that this was going to happen. The timing -- after the second preseason game -- may be a little surprising, but even that isn't a huge shock. There were articles in Nov 2006 showing the team's displeasure with Trotter. An article noting that the team was politely suggesting Trotter consider retirement in January. The team publicly noted Trotter's poor conditioning and weight issues and poor knees leading up to the draft. They made no bones about Gaither playing in the nickel and holding Trotter to 60% of the snaps at best. Once Spikes and Gocong proved healthy and capable of manning the OLB spots, Trotter was done if he hadn't shown significant improvement. They are ready and Trotter was expendable. Spikes can provide some of that emotional leadership, Gaither can provide better range and coverage and the team hasn't been afraid to push defensive buttons (Trotter's release in the past, Lewis benched last year, etc).As we've discussed today in the IDP threads, unless Pasquarelli has a source, it's Gaither not Spikes in the middle. The team tabbed Gaither as Trotter's heir during his first mini-camp when they moved him inside despite his playing outside at UT. With the exception of the time he spent filling in for the mess at WLB with McCoy/Barber in 2006, the bulk of Gaither's snaps have been at MLB. And I believe someone heard Spikes on the radio say he was staying at the Will.Seriously, you football fans get over to the IDP forum once in a while. Great defensive discussions every day.I'm not going to pretend like I saw it coming, and to be fair the only one who did say that is Dr. Jene and he's not an Eagles fan last time I checked (but he is an IDP guy so he would pay more attention to the LB situations of note). correct, spikes said he is the WILL but also stated he will be lining up all over the place but then clarified that is due to the scheme that JJ runs not due to Trots releaseNot an Eagles fan, Woodrow, as you know, but follow the defensive side of the ball with an almost stupid passion. Those of you who don't play in IDP leagues but follow defensive football really should come over to the IDP forum when you get a free moment now and then.
