The Philadelphia Eagles signed 12 players yesterday and allocated nine - eight of them from the 12 just signed - to NFL Europe.

Here are the players who were signed, and their heights, weights and colleges:

Free safety Ed Canonico, 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Sacramento State; defensive tackle Jeremy Caudill, 6-2, 318, Kentucky; quarterback Timmy Chang, 6-2, 194, Hawaii; tight end Jonas Crafts, 6-3, 250, Texas-El Paso; center Dominic Furio, 6-3, 305, UNLV; wide receiver Michael Gasperson, 6-4, 220, San Diego.

Punter Reggie Hodges, 6-0, 226, Ball State; defensive end Darrell Lee, 6-4, 273, Florida; strong safety Corey Peoples, 6-2, 212, South Carolina; strong safety Brandon Pinderhughes, 5-11, 195, Nebraska-Omaha; wide receiver Edward Simms, 6-4, 230, William Penn; and tight end Andy Thorn, 6-5, 250, Northern Iowa.

Caudill, Chang, Crafts, Gasperson, Lee, Peoples, Pinderhughes and Simms were allocated to NFL Europe, where they will be joined by defensive tackle Keyonta Marshall, a seventh-round draft choice of the Eagles in 2005. Marshall spent time on the practice squad and the active roster last season, appearing in one game.

Canonico, Crafts, Furio, Gasperson, Lee and Thorn finished the 2005 season on the practice squad. Hodges briefly punted for the Eagles during the regular season.

Chang finished his college career at Hawaii in 2004 as the all-time Division I leader in passing yardage, completions and total offense.

Given the Eagles lack of a quality backup for McNabb, this could pan out come August, or at least have Chang competing for #2 or #3.

McMahon, now Chang. The Lions will be kicking themselves for trading away another QB prospect.I'd rather have those 2 over Garcia and Orlovsky.

Classic Detroit Lion buffoonery.

NFLE has done a great job with QBs. IMO more than any other position. I expected some team to do this. A handful of NFL coaches have gone on the record as saying something quite similar too. There were a few threads here last summer. IIRC He's too small or his arm is too weak. There was something that just made ya expect he'd be cut from his team in preseason and maybe the NFL isn't for him. If it's height, NFLE can't make him taller. I'm still awaiting word on Aaron Rodgers going over there. Last we heard, the Pack were considerring it but debating what's best for their young QB. Also very interested in Ruvell Martin still. He was awesome in NFLE last year and while he was away his wife had their first child. After being cut by the Chargers he decided to go home and be with his wife and child(whom he'd barely seen for 6 months) rather than try and latch on with another team. He's tall+has great "ups", has OK speed and scored a ton of TDs in NFLE. Has he already earned an invite to an NFL team's camp or does he have to go to NFLE again to earn one? Chargers also had a rook "Quinnie" that the fans seemed to really like but I'd swear he got cut too. He may have been their leading WR in preseason. I'd expect him to get signed + sent to NFLE too.

How can teams be signing players now? I thought they couldn't sign players until after the draft? Are these players out of college? Why would they be signing now instead of waiting to see if they'd be drafted?

yes out of college last year, or longer for some

Id think with the McCarthy hiring...they may be keeping Rodgers around GB and getting him into their off-season program first...also all depends on Favre's decision...no way they let Rodgers go off to Europe if Favre is calling it quits.

Were you joking with this post?I'm all for ripping the Lions -- but for getting rid of McMahon and Chang? I mean, there's PLENTY of ammunition out there against the Lions. Let's use that. Not getting rid of stiffs like McMahon and Chang.

McMahon I can maybe see his point on. I was always a big fan of the guy, even if he did suck for the most part. I like guys who play with his intensity, they're fun to watch. However, how can you be upset about letting Timmy Chang go? The guy couldnt win a job as a #3 guy anywhere in the league this summer. He has no arm strength, no height, no size, and doesnt know how to run a pro-offense.

Great, just what we need, another undersize, rag arm system guy with no shot at being a consistent winner should Donovan get hurt again.

What's the knock on his size? He's listed at 6'2". I'd say he's a better prospect than a tired Koy or a skittish Mike McMahon. Then there's Andy Hall.....

Should have kept Blake from last year.

They need a better #2 for next season - but Chang could pan out at #3. Granted he played in the WAC, but he looked pretty good.

I remember watching Chang in a bowl game last year. Dude absolutely couldn't read the defense.. looked like a deer in headlights against what was probably the best college defense he faced that year. Chang just doesn't have it.

Timmy Chang = crap. I had to watch this kid 4 years+ at Hawaii and despite the numbers, he was not a good QB. He's also the career INT leader in the NCAA. He never came up big in the big games either. He even earned himself a nickname in Hawaii, "Tammy" :)

Timmy Chang set records because he played in the WAC, in a run-n-shoot, and started the better part of 4 years. He also, IIRC, is the all-time NCAA leader in interceptions thrown too :XHe's got a below average arm, has shown no propensity to read NFL caliber defenses, has limited mobility, is a hot head, and played in a system in college that didn't prepare him [from a footwork or mechanics standpoint] to play in the NFL.Otherwise my Birds got a STEAL

:goodposting: though, I wonder where the "hot head" part comes from. Chang has no emotion really. That's part of what I didnt like about him. No leadership/fire.

When I said hot head, I was referring to the few times I distinctly recall his getting benched. I presumed that was due to being a hot head, but in fact it could have had more to do, as you suggest, with a LACK of emotion/leadership. Either is a problem in my book.

All I know is that the dude won me some scratch with some "overs".GDB watching football at 1am CST because you're 3 points from an over.

Dude couldn't keep a spot on the Cadinals practice squad! practice squad? Cardinals? Oh, he must really be that bad.

He got benched because he just stunk. You're right though, the either way, it's a problem. Ashley Lelie should count his blessings that Chang got benched during his (Lelie's) JR year. If not, there's no way he would have had the season he did and gotten drafted in the 1st round. Nick Rolovich baby!

Wow, that's terrible. And he probably would have been playing if could have beaten out Navarre... :bag: The search for a quality #2 continues....

The signing means nothing. Why people are acting as if the Eagles just signed their new back-up QB is beyond me.They got him dirt cheap and he probably won't make it out of training camp as part of the team anyway.

No joke.

AGAIN, let me say this

"I'd rather have those 2 over Garcia and Orlovsky."

McMahon played better as BOTH a Lion and an Eagle than Garcia this year.

And Timmy Chang has a better college stats than Orlovsky (which is all we have to go on for now).

bumping an old thread

http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/sports/14580424.htm

Despite yesterday's disappointing performance, Chang apparently has shown enough this spring in NFL Europe. He will get an opportunity at training camp this summer to become the Eagles' No. 3 quarterback behind Donovan McNabb and Jeff Garcia.

"We like him," Eagles general manager Tom Heckert said. "If he tones down his mistakes, I think he's got a chance. I really do. The kid has tons of records, and he's shown the ability to play. He has to do it at this level, but I think he's got a chance. He's not going to be just a camp body."

Chang received brief looks as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Arizona Cardinals and Detroit Lions last summer. The 24-year-old has discovered that his 17,072 college passing yards and 117 touchdowns are a guarantee of nothing at the professional level.

"That whole year was pretty different," Chang said by telephone Friday from the Fire's training headquarters in Dusseldorf, Germany. "I went from playing football for a long time to just completely sitting out. It didn't seem like I got much of a shot in Arizona."

Heckert said Chang should get a shot with the Eagles this summer.

"Andy [Reid] always lets them play in the preseason, so that will be big for him," Heckert said. "I think he'll at least make somebody's practice squad."

Chang, who first auditioned for the Eagles over the winter, said he was thankful for the chance to play in NFL Europe after his inactive fall.

"I take nothing for granted at this point," he said. "I appreciate any experience I can get. Last year was a big eye-opener."

Chang, at 6-foot-1 and just over 200 pounds, knows he is considered small by today's NFL quarterback standards. He also knows that there is a belief that he cannot play in a conventional NFL offense after working exclusively from the shotgun at Hawaii.

Heckert said one of the reasons the Eagles allocated Chang to NFL Europe was that they wanted him to get used to taking snaps from under center.

"We talked to the coaches over there, and they said it was a problem because he wasn't used to doing it," Heckert said. "But now, he's doing a lot better with it. He's athletic and he's got a strong arm. The kid makes plays. In college, he was a little wild and threw some interceptions, too."

Having seen some Hawaii games, Chang was pretty much worthless. He was a product of a system that never ran the ball.

meh

I thought it was newsworthy and/or progress from last year that Heckert says the Iggles like him and that he's learned to play under center now.

i am not saying it isn't newsworthy. just that he is nothing to get excited about.

Wasn't Quinn Gray a pretty good NFLE QB? He's almost a lock to hold onto the Jags QB3 job this year.

And the front office says lots of nice things about him as well.

For deep dynasty leagues.... DEEP leagues, this is noteworthy.

For Iggles fans, not so much.

Overall - mostly "meh" - but still something to keep an eye on as he'll get some time in August.

Hawaii season ticket holder. I think you're being a bit harsh here. True, UH didn't run the ball much. But he's got a very good arm. Makes good reads and had to digest a very complex offensive scheme under June Jones. He can make all the throws... he just has to cut down on the mistakes. Hope he makes it in Philly.
