Well you know the news by now, Vick is the official starter for the rest of the season, or until he gets hurt... whichever comes first. Considering that he took 24 hits against the Detroit defense last week, 5 for sacks....I'm guessing the latter. Even a Vick hater such as myself has to acknowledge that the guy looks vastly improved compared to where he was last year. His mid range passes are crisp and on a line. His foot speed and quickness are back in a big way. His pocket presence is back as you saw last week with those 2 amazing spins with blitzes coming from his blind side. His deep pass arm is back, if still more of the chuck and duck style. But the WRs he's now throwing to are light years better than what he had in Atl. They can make a quick break for those deep balls and beat the defender there, where in Atlanta they would end up tipped or INTs. He is showing better man 2 man reads than I've ever seen him do in the past.
Now the bad news. He still gets confused by a simple zone blitz defense and his missile lock-down on DeSean Jackson is very apparent. Not to mention that he may be standing behind the worst OLine in the NFL. We started playing a game at the bar last week, if Vick had to scramble or avoid a tackle before the 3 second mark, we had to do a shot or drink a beer. We all got very drunk and stopped playing in the 3rd Q because it was getting too expensive. He's not getting 3 seconds to throw the ball, that is a travesty. As a result he's dropping back and almost completely ignoring the right side of the field. This is very bad news for Maclin owners because by the time Vick looks at him he's in desperation mode unless he's the play's 1st option. Vick is looking at Jackson from the get go and if he's even just a little open, he'll get the ball. In fact, both Avant and McCoy got more looks than Maclin did last week. I know it's too early to make this a trend, but it's all I've got to go on.
Celek is gonna take a big hit this year because he's needed for blocking. He's only been targeted 9 times total in 2 games and caught 5 of them for 59 yards and no TDs. On the other hand, McCoy's numbers should improve. Vick's ability to run has taken some LB pressure off of McCoy and if last week was any barometer of things to come, he'll have more room to maneuver in the defenses 2nd level. He went from 35 yards rushing against GB to 127 yards rushing against Det with a 7.5 YPR average.
It's going to be a rough year to handicap that's for sure. Right now I'd say the only sure fantasy locks week to week for the Eagles are Vick, McCoy, and Jackson. Look for Reid to give Vick a goal line rushing TD this week to help solidify his decision to bench Kolb.
Toad Predicts:
Mike Vick: 250 Yards passing, 2 passing TDs, 50 yards rushing, 1 rushing TD
Shady McCoy: 125 Total Yards, 1 TD, 10% chance at 2 TDs
DeSean Jackson: 110 Yards Receiving, 1 TD
Jeremy Maclin: 50 yards Receiving, 30% chance at a TD
Brent Celek: 40 Yards Receiving, 40% chance at a TD
Jason Avant: 30 yards Receiving, 20% chance at a TD
