Eddie Royal-WR Denver (1 Viewer)

Royal went undrafted in my main money league (I took Meachem instead...stupid) and I'm PRAYING that he'll slide to me in waivers. Even with Marshall as my #1, I think Royal makes a very nice WR 3 in place of the injured Burleson and the crappy Coles.Sorry, too much personal info...My point is that I think Royal will still get his, even with Marshall coming back; Cutler's stepping up to the level just behind Brees and Romo, which should result in some great stats for both Marshall and Royal.
I don't think he's even behind those guys anymore - he's right there with them.

So if you had to put him in a tier in a redraft, where would you put him? Roddy White/Crayton level?
I have White... I would start Royal over White at this point, but I could see them being in a similar tier seeing as we DO still only have one game by which to judge... but it would be a tier ahead. Definately have him above Crayton. Both are #2s on teams that will have potent passing games... but Royal has already shown considerably more talent than Crayton.Whites big issue is his offense and rookie QB.

Any good QB is going to keep going to a WR who keeps getting open. That was Royal last night.

:( Not after 1 game against the Raiders. I realize they have good corners, but there was no pass rush to speak of. Cutler looked great, but let's not compare him to Brees or Romo just yet.

What's not to like about Royal? Beside the talent we saw last night his situation is ideal:

1) Emerging QB that can make all of the throws and extend plays.

2) Plays along-side a legit WR1 to attract most attention.

3) Team may struggle at RB and put more emphasis on throwing the ball.

I'm not basing my judgment on just that one game - I've watched every snap of Cutler's career and I can say with confidence that he is every bit as talented as those two (probably more so) and every bit as NFL ready. The guy is legit. You can laugh now, but at season's end, it won't be funny. It'll simply be true.

Mmm...I hope so, I own Cutler in one of my leagues. But again, to NOW state that he is on par with two of the elites in the league in lieu of a blow out against Oakland seems a little premature to me.

Wayne, Bolden, Welker, Housh, Calvin Johnson (wait and see)...........all have studs across from them...all have QB's that can get the ball downfield, all have average but not horrible running backs, and all are great #2's.With Cutler's health and maturation...and with Marshall back...I see no reason why a guy like Royal couldn't turn into one of the guys listed above. Is he there after one huge game? No, but he's on the road and has all the right pieces around him.
Thanks, I was looking for a similar duo, it's ocho and Housh. Now imagine them with a OLine that can actually block.

Based on what I saw Royal doing to Hall last night, the confidence that a very good QB showed in him, and the return of the beast opposite him, I would put him in the Crayton tier. But he's got a higher ceiling. I will say that he has the POTENTIAL to move up to the Cotchery / Evans tier and possibly to the Megatron/Bolden tier. But damn near everything would have to fall right for that to happen.

Stepping back and looking at the big picture, Denver is a team in transition. They've been a great running team historically. But they looked ineffective running much of the game last night. Their run defense is poor and has been for awhile. They will likely need to play catchup in many games. Cutler is poised to become a top tier QB and Denver is decidedly now a throwing team. So the situation is right for a guy to emerge.

One thing that does give me hesitancy is his size. Teams will try to beat him up. He is not a large man. And rookies very frequently seem to hit a wall about 2/3 into the season. My gut tells me this guy will be hot for half a season, but struggle down the stretch. I've been wrong before, but thats what I'm seeing right now.

There's not a Royal owner on the planet who would trade him for big mouth/minimal production Crayton right now.

I don't care how big he is -- he's a tremendous football player. Guy just gets it done. He looked damn near impossible to cover. He's too fast/quick/explosive for DBs to stay on him, and his route running is unreal for a rookie. There is a reason the coaches called that game the way they did, and went out of their way to get the ball into his hands as much as possible. He's a football player and a playmaker. Guy has "it" written all over him.

BTW, several people have mentioned that he looked like a young Marvin Harrison. The name that crossed my mind was a Terry Glenn.

Part of that is the potential vs. Crayton, who we all know. Part of that is the knob-slobberization of Eddie Royal is out of control. I'm not saying Royal won't be good - or even great - this season, but on another board I saw someone compare his season to the Randy Moss rookie season...

I drafted Royal at 14.12 as my sleeper rookie WR. I figured originally he may be a serviceable WR5 or 6, but after what I saw last night he's jumped up to WR4. He ran great routes, and was utilized every which way by the coaches. I loved the confidence the coaching staff and Cutler showed in him.

That said, I think Marshall's return will temper his numbers a bit, and I'd suspect a roller coaster season of some huge weeks, and not so huge weeks from here on out.

Royal will get starting nods for my squad on bye weeks, or in the case of injury, but I don't see him replacing the 3 WRs I have starting ahead of him (Edwards, AJ, Boldin).

In fairness, he did just come out and torch a former Pro Bowl CB for 150 yards. The last time I saw a rookie light it up like that in his pro debut was when Boldin destroyed the Lions in his first game. I think this type of immediate success bodes very well for Royal's future. And it's not like it was a fluke game where he hit a couple lucky deep balls. He won the starting job in training camp and was clearly the focal point of the offense last night. The fact that the coaches also gave him the ball on several reverses tells me they know this guy is a playmaker. I think excitement is warranted. It's early, but he looks like he belongs in the Holmes/Jennings class as a dynasty prospect. That doesn't mean I'd trade Jennings or Holmes for him. I'm just saying he appears to be headed in that direction.

No arguments with any of that. It's possible that last night was the perfect storm, who knows? A little excitement is great (I have him on my team, btw)... but Marshall is coming back. We'll see what happens.

I'm sure I am not the only one facing this question. But I am curious to see what others think. I drafted Marshall early in my draft and then picked up Royal in the second-to-last round as a one-week fill-in for Marshall. My other WRs are not great. Anybody else who drafted Royal to fill in one week considering using Marshall and Royal together. I have only done this once (Ward and Plaxico in Pittsburgh one year) and it worked well. But I must admit it makes me nervous. Any thoughts?

Bump - Curious what everyone has to say about Royal. Is he the next Boldin, or a one week wonder.
Ummm... read all the posts above yours.
Looking for some new blood in the conversation, this post has been very helpfull so far. There seems to be a lot of denver homers on this board and I hoped that a few more of them might chime in if they stumbled accross the topic (that had fallen to page 3).

Grow up. The team is drafted. The question is more about whether people are hesitant to put that many eggs in one basket. Lots of threads about this over the years from people who owned Manning and Harrison/Palmer and Johnson, etc. It's a conversation starter, not an assistant coach post.

Umm.. its a copy and paste from the top of the forum...maybe you never have read or saw it? Your post is a WDIS and belongs in the Assistant coach forum if you ask me. I also believe the conversation about Royal was started long ago in this thread. Thanks anyway. :lmao:

I value him around WR30..I think with Marshall there, his typical weeks are going to range from a good WR3 to a bad WR3..that said, based on how he looked, I think hell be more consistent than most WRs in this tier/area.

I'm on the Eddie Royal bandwagon. What struck me immediately was his route running ability. Even halfway decent route running is unusual in a rookie, and Royal ran some very crisp routes. His double-out was great to watch and had Deangelo Hall spinning. The kid's got talent. His 9 receptions on 11 targets is also a testament to his ability to get open, his hands, and Cutler's passing ability.

But it's more than just talent. The situation looks very good as well. Cutler is looking very good. Marshall coming back will mean he'll be facing single or zone coverage all year long. Denver's running game is a multi-headed monster and this team will rely on the passing game. All these things add up to a strong possibility Royal has a special year.

Of course, we can say this was against Oakland, whose pass rush was fairly non-existent. You can say they've got decent corners, but Hall did look terrible...was that due to Royal being that good or Hall being that bad or both? Also, Marshall will be back, and certainly will get his fair share of targets.

So, I am very interested in watching Denver face San Diego on Sunday. San Diego (even without Merriman) poses a significantly greater defensive problem than Oakland. Marshall will be back in the lineup. This is a huge game for the AFC west this early in the season as well. I predict we'll see another solid game from Royal, although not the coming out party of this past week. 6/80 will a decent chance at a TD.

Crayton's career stats in 4 years and 1 game51 games 126 rec, 1798 yards, 14 TD's, 486 return yards, 0 TD's12 rec, 162 yards, 1 TD in his first YEAR -vs- 9 rec, 146 yards, 1 TD in his first GAME.I'm not sure we are talking apples to apples here as both guys were in different situations, different systems, etc. What I AM sure about is that Eddie Royal just jumped onto everyone's radar...and you better get him NOW while the getting is good. If he bombs, you can drop him...but if he explodes some of just got a starting WR with a shot-in-the-dark THIRD round rookie pick in our dynasty leagues.

Cutler hasnt shown himself to be someone who spreads it around a lot. Last year he routinely keyed on Marshall over and over, to the tune of 1300 yards and 7 TDs. When Scheffler stepped up, he was also targeted and was one of the top TEs over the second half of the season. My point is that Cutler throws to guys who play well, but (admittedly based on a small sample size) he seems to limit this to one or two favorite targets.

Marshall and Royal have the talent to be top playmakers. Marshall developed great chemistry with Cutler last season, and this preseason Marshall and Royal clearly established great rapport with him. Scheffler seems to be falling out of favor. Cutler is not like Tom Brady from a few years ago where he could throw for 3000+ yards without having a 1000 yard receiver. I can see Cutler with 3700-4100 yards, and Marshall leading the way with 1400 and 7-10 TDs, and Royal with 1100 yards with 7-9 TDs.

Who else did Cutler have to throw to last year? Kinda hard NOT to lock onto a guy when he's the only viable option. Sheff got hurt, and you can see for yourself how good Javon Walker was. That being said, Defenses knew where the ball was going and STILL couldn't stop Cutler-to-Marshall-Scheffler..........now add Royal into the mix.

I just saw a trade in one of my leagues (redraft, PPR for WR/TE, auction) that I figured I'd share with folks. Both owners are experienced so there is no "Guppy Factor" at play here.

Royal for Colston even up.

The team with Royal bought him for $4 or $5 at the end of the auction (there was enough buzz about Royal that he couldn't buy him for $1) as a backstop to Brandon Marshall (went for ~ $42).

The team with Colston (paid ~ $50) did not have a lot of WR depth and is now looking at Colston out for 4-6 weeks.

Personally, I like the Colston side of the deal.

Someone just got sharked as Colston is out 4-6 weeks.

No the trade just hit my email and I'm pretty sure that the buyer of Colston knew that he was hurt thus the "discounted" Colston was moved for a healthy Royal. No way the guy would move a pre-injury Colston for a rookie WR.

Royal wasn't drafted in our league, but he just went for $61 in FAAB (out of $150 budget) in the first week of FA pickups. I had placed a bid of $26...no idea what the other bids were as it's a blind bidding process.

Let me ask my fellow Royal owners for an opinion.

I am very weak at RB due to injuries, but I'm loaded at WR. A buddy of mine is loaded at RB, but very weak at WR. I was thinking of offering Royal to him in exchange for Justin Fargas. Is this a fair offer? Am I getting the better end of it? Is he? Hard to gauge a guy's true value after one career start.

No way I do that deal if I am you RN. You know how awful the Raiders looked, and we have to assume that McFadden (and maybe Bush) will continue to see his role in the offense grow. As much as I am sure you hate the Broncos, it looks to me like their passing offense is destined to be top 5.

Thanks, and I don't hate ANYONE when it comes to fantasy football.Right now, I have Cutler, Marshall, Royal, Hall and Prater if you can believe it. I should call myself Bronco Nation....

Eddie Royal blind bid story from this week:

I definitely wanted Royal on my dynasty team. We are in a $100 salary cap league, so how much you bid on a player in-season + the player's performance determines his cap figure next year.

I bid $6 on him Tuesday, then I changed my bid to $7.50 Wednesday. Problem is, a rival owner submitted a blind bid of $27.50! Now, I am very high on Royal. But that is ridiculous. Not because I think Royal isn't good. But $27.50 is a lot to spend on one WR. That's how much guys like Fitzgerald and Wayne are worth.
