Edelman , 16T, 8rec - Week 2 (1 Viewer)

Maybe not the best thread, but I will ask regardless. Yesterday morning before church, Mr. Yudkin told on the injury thread that he had heard of no reason that Welker was any more liklely to sit week two than week one when he caught 12 passes. I know that Belichek will not detail the injuries and all, but what is known about Welker's injury? Will Edelman only stay involved as a replacement for Welker?

I was at this game. Edelman dropped a lot of passes right on his hands. so many bobbles I could not believe it. What I took from Edelman's stats is how much Brady really relies on Welker. Much more than Moss to move the chains.

I noticed the same thing. Edelman could have had 12+ recs pretty easily.

Maybe why they lost.

Faulk with his good hands was hardly used in this game. I thought sneaky play and was wrong

The official stats for the game list Edelman with 16 targets and zero drops. I watched the game on TV and did not miss many plays but I thought I saw a drop or at least a questionable no-catch.

To his credit that was a high pressure game due to the Patriots not scoring like normal, Brady was under pressure most of the game and was not nearly as accurate as a normal. He is a converted QB, which rarely means instant success as a WR. Honestly not a bad game for a rookie who has not been playing wr that long, even if he did have a couple drops.

He has some decent numbers 4.5 Forty 3.92 shuttle, 6.67 cone, 36.5" vertical, 10"03" broad jump, 1.52 10-yd split. Like Welker, much more quick than fast.

With all due respect, that's simply not true (you might have mistaken him for Galloway on a couple of occasions). I watched most of the game live (on TV) & was surprised by your comment. I watched Short Cut just to confirm & Edelman had 1 flat out drop. He turned his head upfield to look for a lane before securing the ball (Edelman will learn to look the ball in as he gets more experience). He touched the ball on a couple of other occasions (off his fingertips), but they were diving/jumping attempts at an inaccurate pass. Some players in this situation tend to get hyped, but Edelman is truly a great find by the Pats.As his incredible short shuttle suggests (3.92), Edelman has all-world quicks/change of direction, is a natural hands-catcher, can break tackles, & he's a football player. Sounds like Welker, LOL. In fact, I nearly fell off my chair when I saw him in his first preseason game because of his resemblance to Welker (playing style). I knew of Edelman in college & planned to keep my eye on him after he got drafted, but he's totally blown my expectations out of the water (as far as how fast he's progressed). In short, I couldn't be more impressed by Edelman's first real action. One thing I really liked is his ability to hang onto the ball after getting a big hit, which is key when you run the kind of routes he does. When you consider Brady missed him wide open at the GL, Edelman could've had an even bigger game. This kid is going to be one helluva FF WR in time. Edelman's transition to WR has been nothing short of amazing.

16 targets for a rookie is amazing. After two weeks in a row of 16 targets from that position, I think we can safely assume that the slot spot on NE will continue to get a ridiculous amount of targets and receptions from Brady.

Keep in mind Edelman's ankle probably isn't 100%, either. Obviously, I don't call the shots for the Pats, but if I were BB, I'd think about benching Galloway when Welker comes back.

I'm still stumped about Welker. I will post if I find out more, but I was under the distinct impression that he was going to play. Looks like it literally was decided before the game not to play, as he practiced and warmed up with the team and then went back to get dressed into street clothes for the game. I wonder if he aggravated it in warm ups. :shuked:

The guy was a surprise start in his first season in the NFL - and he has eight catches . . . how many NFL WRs have eight catches in their first game?????

did Matt Jones ever have eight catches in a game . . .

if Edelman dropped a few, cut him some slack . . .

----------------

from a FF perspective, it means little, unless Welker is out for awhile . . .

I watched the game and Edelmans hands were GREAT. I didn't see any fumbling of passes and I only recall one drop. He was wide open on a few throws where Brady simply could not get him the ball because of the Jets pass rush. He should have had 9 receptions, 100+ yards and a TD if Brady could have hit him in the hands wide open in the front of the endzone. It also would have been nice because then the game would have gone into overtime!

Just goes to show you that with Tom Brady, a guy like Randy Moss demanding coverage, and the Patriots overall system, putting up good numbers as their possession receiver really is something a lot of NFL WRs could easily do. Welker is nothing special. I have said that for years. He is a good possession receiver...nothing more, nothing less.

Edelman did line up in the wrong spot a couple of times early. One time Moss told him to step forward on the line of scrimmage. Another time Brady moved him from the right side to the left side of the line, on a run to the right.

I wouldn't say Brady relies on Welker/Edelman more than Moss in general, but he didn't have much choice in this game given the constant pressure and Revis factor.

has anyone ever debated this fact?? not sure I get the point of this comment.. Are you stating that a players value sometimes comes directly from the situation he's thrown in??..wow that's truly innovating..Fact is he is in NE and he's going to be a beast in fantasy leagues -PPR. He's a perfect fit there and is as good as NE needs him to be. Could use a little less unexperienced/unknowledgeable "analysts" and more info regarding the subject of the OP.

The thing that impressed me was he seemed to be open on every play. He also had some decent blocks in the running game.

What's Welkers contract look like? He could be looking for new job next year with the way Edelman played.

edit: 3/5/2007: Welker Signed a five-year, $18.1 million contract. The deal included a $5.5 million signing bonus and a $3.5 million option bonus in the second year. 2009: $1.65 million (+ $250,000 roster bonus + $100,000 workout bonus), 2010: $1.9 million (+ $250,000 roster bonus + $100,000 workout bonus), 2011: $2.15 million (+ $250,000 roster bonus + $100,000 workout bonus), 2012: Free Agent

so his job looks safe, but Edelman sure was impressive.

So, Edelman did nothing in week three. Yet Welker still isn't playing and we still have no clue if/when he will come back or what his injury is.

Does he still have upside?
