This will be the third game this season that Thomas will miss due to injury, as he sat out Week 3 at the New York Jets and Week 4 at home against the Oakland Raiders from a concussion. Channing Crowder moved into the middle for those two games and will start there again Sunday against the New York Giants, which means Derrick Pope and Donnie Spragan also will be called upon on defense.
Starting weakside linebacker Channing Crowder, who has 32 tackles this season, will fill in for Thomas as the Dolphins' middle linebacker. Derrick Pope will play in Crowder's place on the weakside. Joey Porter and Crowder will likely man the nickel package, which brings a fifth defensive back onto the field.
I haven't seen anything other than the Yahoo note suggesting that Miles has a role here. To my knowledge, he's just a special teams guy. My guess is that that blurb checked the depth chart on the Dolphins website and saw Miles listed as Thomas' backup rather than possessing any inside information. Crowder has been dinged, but has fully participated in practice both Wednesday and Thursday, as has Pope. We'll keep an eye out for potential changes, but it'll be big news if it's not Porter/Crowder/Pope this week.
