Egyptian history geeks check in: Cosmic rays reveal a hidden corridor in the Great Pyramid of Giza (1 Viewer)

Not Egypt related, but archeological. I have a property with 3 different home sites from what we figure are early to mid 1800s. I'm basing that off the actual homestead which was established around 1880 and these sites appear to predate that by quite a bit in appearance and condition. To my knowledge they've never been excavated.

Anyone have an experience digging around old sites like this? I bought a cheap metal detector from Amazon, but maybe i should get something better to really find what's there? Plan is to wait until next spring before the vegetation gets thick like it is now.

Picture of one of the sites. Pretty much just a rock foundation left. There's some old rusty scraps on the surface and remnants of an old outbuilding.

A cheap metal detector is fine to start with. I'm sure you will get plenty of hits. I would get some of those marker flags and maybe some magnets too for surface iron.

Thanks, good ideas i didn't think of. I've never done anything like this, so i don't want to just start digging it up and making a mess. The sites are pretty cool in person and i don't want to destroy them. At the same time I'm imagining all the gold coins that are probably stashed there :moneybag: . I planned on doing this last spring, but life got in the way.

We're also really close to some copper culture burial mounds and there's been a bunch of artifacts in the area. I've looked for arrow heads and such with no luck, but creek beds or farm feilds with a metal detector might get some hits.
