Eli Manning, Retired and the HoF Debate (1 Viewer)

Eli Manning completed just 15-of-30 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns in the Giants' 23-17, Week 14 overtime loss to the Eagles Monday night.

Manning was making his first start since Week 2. Neither offense did much of anything in a horrendous first quarter, but Manning did find a second-frame groove with 36- and 54-yard touchdown hookups with rookie WR Darius Slayton. Manning went into the half 11-of-19 for 179 yards the the two scores. The second half was an utter disaster, however, as Eli was 4-of-11 for 24 yards in the final 30-plus minutes. The Eagles put 20 unanswered on the board to survive. Daniel Jones (ankle) is expected to miss at least one more game, putting Manning under center for Week 15 at home against the Dolphins.
When Eli Manning is given time and his receivers get open, he can still play QB in this league. I hope he gets one home game before his sendoff.

Well he was playing against a pretty brutal secondary but he did look decent, especially early.

I enjoyed him giving us one more classic Eli moment when they showed him wandering around after the game looking for Wentz.

SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reports Eli Manning is "likely" to start in Week 15 against the Dolphins.

"The demands on a running back with an ankle are different than the demands on a quarterback with an ankle," coach Pat Shurmur said on Daniel Jones' injury. "But I still think it's important to remember that a part of Daniel's game is his ability to move around." Narrative-wise, it makes sense Manning would get the nod over Jones since this will likely be the 38-year-old's final home start in his illustrious Giants career. He would arguably make for a stronger streaming option than Sam Darnold or Mitchell Trubisky (among others) since the Giants are quietly implied to score 25 points by Vegas.

SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reports Eli Manning is likely to retire this offseason.

38-year-old Manning's contract is up after the season. He's not going to re-sign with the Giants and may struggle to find any starting interest. It makes sense for Manning to retire with the only team he's ever played for. The Giants are moving forward with Daniel Jones as their post-Manning starter.

Eli Manning announced his retirement.

The 39-year-old two-time Super Bowl MVP will reportedly hang up his cleats with a 117-117 record over 16 seasons with the Giants. He quietly walks away with the seventh-most passing yards (57,023) and passing touchdowns (366) in league history, somehow never missing a game due to injury. Though his play clearly tailed off in his waning seasons before inevitably passing the torch to No. 6 overall pick Daniel Jones, Manning's perfect 38-yard rope to Mario Manningham in Super Bowl XLVI and, of course, his 32-yard strike to David Tyree's helmet in Super Bowl XLII will both live in perpetuity among February highlight reels. His two Super Bowl rings likely make him a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame despite conflicting opinions.
End of an era... he won't be a commercial celebrity like Peyton, much more demure personality. Whatever he does I hope he's happy.

Coughlin's letter to Eli _  (dont have a link).   Two guys that will go down in NYG history.

"Eli, I want to thank you for all that you have done for the Giants, for the NFL, and for the community. You and I came to the Giants together, and it has been an honor and a privilege to work with you and to be your coach. Thank you for all the great memories," Coughlin said in a statement via The Jay Fund Foundation through Giants Wire. "I can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds for you and Abby and the children. You are certainly deserving of all the accolades that come your way.

"In the locker room, you were always an incredible combination of a quiet leader and fierce competitor; you represented the Giants in all matters with the utmost integrity and your leadership and skill as a quarterback were key to two Super Bowl victories and being named MVP twice. But it's the person you are that will be missed the most by your teammates and the entire Giants organization.

"Archie and Olivia should be so proud of the son they raised. Your words and actions epitomize who you are as a player, a teammate, a dad, and a human being. Thank you for all the joy you've given to everyone you've touched as a New York Giant."

Probably the 2nd worst HOF QB after Namath.  He'll get in, and likely on the first ballot, mostly due to the fact that he played in New York.
Why do you think that playing in NY helps a players’ HOF chances?

There aren’t a lot of Jets in the HOF. Joe Klecko can’t get a sniff.

No one talks about Phil Simms getting in even though he has 2 Super Bowl rings

Harry Carson had to wait forever before he got in. Doesn’t look like Carl Banks is going to get in.

Disagree, Sonny Jurgensen would be second.  Had a worse winning % than Namath and Eli.  Better stats than Namath though.

Eli will get in, IMO.

PFR recently released their HOF Monitoring Tool and Eli scores an 82. The average score for inducted HOF QBs is 103.

Modern era HOFers that would be below him would be:

Stabler 82
Namath 80
Griese 75
Aikman 71
Moon 70
Dawson 64
Kelly 59

While it may be too expensive for ESPN, a Monday Night Football booth with a play by play guy and the two Manning brothers would be pretty entertaining.

Ask anyone in that period watching football "Who is your favorite QB?" . Nobody would say Eli Manning. Not a HOF. Made NFL all-pro team zero times. Not enough credit was given to Giants defense in superbowl. Hall of fame candidates are players are reserved for special players. He just wasn't that special.

Agreed.  But I'm not really not sure how high the bar is in the NFL hall of fame.

In contrast, who is considered the "best" QB not in the hall?

I get why he's not in there, but I always had a soft spot for Bert Jones
It was a different era back in those 14 game seasons.  Jones had a nice three year run.

ETA:  I think I remember Jones doing well in one of those "Wide World of Sports" (or the like) made for TV athletic contests.

ETA2: Bill Belichick had this to say about Jones (circa SB17):

"As a pure passer I don't think I could put anybody ahead of Bert Jones. I know he had a short career and the shoulder injury, but when I was there and he was just starting his career, the success that he had and his ability to throw the ball as a pure passer and as an athlete, it would be hard to put anybody ahead of Bert Jones at that point in time."

Giants D got plenty of credit, all over Brady in 2 games.  Wasn't the D that had game winning drives in the 4th 2x.   I haven't looked it up, but who has won the superbowl giving up 24+?     Team game, argument goes both ways with his 117-117 regular season record.   16 years didn't miss a game due to injury,  Shined when the lights were brightest.    Who was the best QB for the NYG from that draft - guy with 2 rings,  shoulda been 3.

Is that really the best you have for a hall of famer?

Well, I see repeatedly mentioned by the “experts” on ESPN and other places that Eli “has 2 rings” and/or these incredible SB “moments” and it’s done in a way that lumps in the Brad Johnson’s, Trent Dilfers etc with him.

The issue is that this largely diminishes what Eli did in those 2 seasons and runs. It acts as if he was either carried to a win a la Dilfer or he had a great one off game like Doug Williams. Neither is true. 2007 was a remarkable run to a Super Bowl, 2011 was an incredible season and a great run to a Super Bowl. Manning received MVP that year and deservedly so and led a pretty unstoppable offense by seasons end.

Manning led 8 wins with 5 of those wins coming on the road. He knocked off the 1 and 2 seeds both times, All of these teams were 13-3 or better. He didn’t just beat Brady, he beat Favre and Rodgers and Romo. Manning bested a 15-1 defending Super Bowl champion on their home field. He topped BrettFavre in an Ice Bowl. They beat top rated offenses and defenses. He took an insane pounding at San Fran against an incredible defense.

It wasn’t just the Helmet Catch and the Manningham throw. It was the insane drive in a minute vs Dallas before the half. It was his ice in his veins stoicness that undressed Al Harris. It was his sideline improvised toss to Kevin Boss. It was his Hail Mary to Hakeem Nicks, it was his level headless to tell TC to call a TO. It was his dogged determination to get up hit after hit that took away San Fran’s heart.

It wasn’t one game, or two games. He wasn’t carried by defenses, He led two championship teams and what should be considered legendary playoff runs.

Yes they slayed the Patriots in both Super Bowls but the entire run was legendary and magical and they laid waste to some of the best teams and the leagues most prominent franchises.

These runs altered the history of the NFL. It’s not just what would NFL history look like with a 7th or 8th Pats SB or the first 19-0 team. How about Brett Favres 2nd Super Bowl Title in his last game with the Pack? How about Romo getting a Super Bowl in Big D? Those were 2 13-3 teams. How about Rodgers going back-to-back with a 15-1 team? Or Jim Harbaugh winning his for San Fran?

This was New England, Dallas. Green Bay and San Francisco he took out. Brady, Favre, Rodgers, Romo. Legacies would be completely changed. This wasn’t knocking off some 9-7 5th or 6th seed type Houston Texan teams.

The history of the NFL can’t be told with out Eli and that’s why he deserves to be in.
