Not sure which reply fits best for my thoughts on it.
I can't imagine Elvis had any legitimate self-awareness at this point. And this one is about as narcissistic a song as has ever been written - I'd bet it would be the most chosen song by American males of a certain age as their eulogies. I think Presley thought this song was the way his audience thought about HIM.
As for the performance, he's able to bring a good holler at times but he's lost a lot.
