Elway: I don’t think Tim Tebow is a good NFL quarterback at this time (1 Viewer)

PFT:

Lots of people have purchased Tim Tebow jerseys lately. John Elway isn’t one of them.

The new executive V.P. of football operations in Denver needs to hire a head coach and, ultimately, the team needs to decide on a strategy for dealing with the franchise’s second first-round pick in 2010. For now, the news for Tebow isn’t good.

“I don’t think Tim Tebow is a good NFL quarterback at this time,” Elway told Peter King of NBC and Sports Illustrated.

The news could be good for former Broncos coach Josh McDaniels. As King explained it, if/when McDaniels lands in a new city as an offensive coordinator (possibly the Twin Cities), McDaniels’ first order of business could be to lobby his team to trade for Tebow. But as King points out, no trades of players can be done until the next league year begins. And the next league year won’t begin until a new labor deal has been negotiated. (Or, technically, until the league declares an impasse and implements new work rules pending an agreement or the union decertifies, blocking a lockout.)

And so just like McDaniels’ decision to dump Jay Cutler, Elway could be running Tebow out of town.

Elway said Tebow is a "darned good football player. What we need to do is make him a darned good QB."

I'm as high on Tebow as anybody, but I basically agree with Elway. He's not a good NFL QB...YET. What he is a tremendous prospect & an even better FF prospect.

From what Tebow showed & what he's capable of, Denver would be crazy to move him. QB prospects like him don't come along very often. Elway isn't dumb. Tebow isn't going anywhere, LOL.

I'm not gonna fina a link and I'm probably paraphrasing, but I remember Elway saying that Tebow has what it takes to be a great QB. But, he's got to be a good QB before he can be great.

IMO, Elway recognizes that Tebow is something special, and won't be looking to move him.

Florio is a well known Tebow-hater. No shock here that he twisted King's report and took it completely out of context. Elway has had quite a bit of positive stuff to say about Tebow. I think even Tebow fans would agree though that he's still more potential than elite NFL QB. Vick was a great athelete and terrible QB for a long time but finally seems to have figured it out. Tebow is a much harder worker and smarter guy than Vick so I think there's reason to believe that his learning curve is less than what Vick's was and that it's certainly possible that he could become a good NFL QB. I'm not saying that he WILL, but that I think he CAN. I think Elway believes the same thing.

Let the Tebow speculation begin

Although the Vikings have yet to say whether former Broncos coach Josh McDaniels will become their offensive coordinator (or even how the meeting between the two sides went on Friday), there is now an interesting twist to the story if that does happen.

John Elway, the Broncos' new executive vice president of football operations, told Peter King of NBC and Sports Illustrated that he doesn't, " think Tim Tebow is a good quarterback at this level at this time.”

That could mean that Elway will be looking to trade Tebow -- King made it clear that Elway never told him he wants to deal Tebow -- and if he does the team that hires McDaniels could be urged to go get Tebow so the two could continue to work together. Former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon told the Star Tribune on Friday that veteran Kyle Orton, who has been with Denver, would be a good fit to run the McDaniels offense but Tebow could be viewed as the Vikings' long-term answer.

Vikings fans will recall the Tebow mania before last year's draft when there was all types of speculation that Minneosta might grab the former Florida Gator. In that case, it was never clear if then-coach Brad Childress or vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman was a Tebow fan. If it was Spielman, Childress would have had the authority to tell him no on Tebow.

In the end, it didn't matter because the Broncos traded up to get the 25th pick in the draft and took Tebow. The Vikings were slated to pick 30th.

If Childress was the one who said he didn't want Tebow and Spielman did like him it could be a situation now where it would be realistic for the Vikings to take a run at the quarterback. Remember, Spielman and new coach Leslie Frazier are expected to both have a say over the roster, where Childress had final authority of the final 53.

As King points out, the real issue now would be the lack of a collective bargaining agreement. Trades can not be made until the first day of the new league year on March 4 and if a lockout starts that day because of no CBA no trades will be allowed until the work stoppage is finished.

Shortly after King's report, Elway took to Twitter to start the damage control.

"To clarify my thoughts on Tim Tebow... I think he's a very good football player, and if anyone can turn themselves into a great QB, Tim can," Elway said. "Myself and our entire organization think very highly of him. We are pleased with his first year as a Bronco. Any speculation that the Denver Broncos are considering moving Tim is completely false."

Nonetheless, if McDaniels does land with the Vikings it's nearly certain plenty of Tebow speculation is certain to follow.

Tebow to the Vikings, let the rumors start

My recollection is the same. I thought Elway was very fair in his assessment and no different than what anyone else has ever said about Tebow. The message, both on paper and underlying, was the same: He has work to do to become a great NFL QB. But, he has the intangibles and work ethic for that to happen.Nothing really to see here. Moving on.

All this speculation is really leaving a sour taste in my mouth for PFT, Mike Florio, and maybe even Peter King.

Reading all of Elway's comments for myself, I come away with a completely opposite impression of Elway's evaluation of Tebow. Yes, he says hes not a "good NFL quarterback yet". And he's only saying what every other person in the league - including Tebow himself probably - believes.

Beyond that he speaks over and over of how highly he (Elway) and the entire organization thinks of Tebow, and implies that any coach they hire will be asked of, and possibly hired on the basis of, their plans to utilize Tebow.

I'm sorry, but inferring that Elway "isn't a Tebow fan" or is likely to "seek a trade" on the basis of his recent comments is irresponsible at best and sensationalist at worst.

:kicksrock: Exactly.

Talk about picking and choosing words.... :goodposting:

Here's what started all the drama which was a segment with Peter King on Football Night In America and subsequent speculation and spin on Florio's part. PFT totally blew this thing out of proportion and I agree with others...sloppy journalism on PFT and to some extent Peter King. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/...ot-a-tebow-fan/
