End of days "Hospice" for our Bulldog (1 Viewer)

SHIZNITTTT

Footballguy
We have a 9 year old female English Bulldog (on the high end of life expectancy already), and a 1.5 year old French bulldog female.  They both have food aggression towards each other EXTREME!  So the dogs gulp down their food without chewing sometimes.   Well one of twins thought it would be a great idea to feed the dogs some table scraps.  What I mean by table scraps is my son giving the dogs whole burritos.   The English swallows the damn burrito whole.  The Frenchie just grabs it and runs away to devour it on the other side of the back yard.  Fast forward to a day later the English is throwing up in the backyard this thick white foamy mess.  I am at work and my son calls me to tell me that he thinks the English is starting to die because she can't breath very well.   It takes him few minutes to tell me that yesterday they were given burritos.   During the conversation on the phone he yells, "I think she is trying to throw up the burrito, because I can see something white!"   He takes a look and sure enough a big chunk of burrito is half way out her mouth stuck in her throat.  So he picks her up and tries to do the Heimlich on the dog.  It works partially so he puts her on her back and "kinda punches her stomach" to get her to cough it up.  Says everything is ok at this point.  Wow am I relieved.    Get home the dog is wheezing like a old man with congestive heart failure.  I give her some prednisone we have lying around in the cabinet, but that doesn't seem to work.  My wife gets home from work a few minutes later and goes into full code mode.  Seriously, she runs and gets the boys old nebulizer and some albuterol and starts giving her a breathing treatment.  Doesn't work.  Take her to the vet, they can't get an I.V. so my wife starts one for them.  They pump her full of steroids, and anti inflammtory medicine.  They put her in an 02 tent to get her saturation up.   We have to leave her for a few hours and call back to see if she gets better.  Meanwhile my wife is a wreck.  She picked out the dog while on a run from a litter in our neighborhood when we first moved here.   We go over all the options.  The vet said we can give her a tracheostomy and we both said, "NO!"   Not putting her through a difficult surgery.  We decide that we will put her down if her symptoms don't improve and we don't want to see her struggle to breath.     Get a call back from the VET, she is doing better, but very weak.  Vet wants to keep her, wife says no we want her home.

So we have her home since yesterday afternoon, and she looks ok one minute and playing a little with the other dog, the next minute is completely passed out and snoring loudly.  Even more loudly than before.  Has spells of sleep apnea that scare the hell out of my wife.    At this point it is touch and go with everyone walking on pins and needles.   Hopefully she gets better, but if not I hope she at least goes in her sleep soon.       FML

Morale don't feed burritos whole to dogs.

What is your address so we can have the local shelter confiscate your animals. Pet ownership doesn't seem to be for you.

Isnt prednisone an oral steroid? I am very confused how you thought giving your dog a random oral steroid pill would help. I took that as a kid for asthma. It isnt like its a epipen shot in a pill.

alrighty
You have kids old enough to be able to pick up a bulldog and "punch it in its stomach" but apparently they don't know that feeding a dog a ####### burrito is a bad idea.

Then you give it prescription drugs lying around your house twice before contacting a vet. Another horrible idea.

I mean, if this is schtick and I'm not getting it, then apologies.

Well by punch in the stomach was the word he used.  I guess massaging the stomach gently wasn't getting the burrito out.

Prednisone is used to treat conditions such as arthritis, blood disorders, breathing problems, severe allergies, skin diseases, cancer, eye problems, and immune system disorders. ... It decreases your immune system's response to various diseases to reduce symptoms such as swelling and allergic-type reactions.

Albuterol is an inhaled medicine used to relieve symptoms of narrowed airways such as with asthma attacks.   Just a lil FYI

Do you think that we just concocted some medicines together and said wtf let's try it.       Sorry I didn't make myself clear.   We both work in the medical field.   Probably need a little help in the teach your kids not to feed a whole burrito to the dog area.

Were the meds prescribed specifically for your dog? Do you know the dosage differences in those meds between humans and your breed of dog?

Why did you not want the vet to keep her? My sister's 13 year old dog ate a box and cat toy the day after Christmas, and was throwing up. The vet gave the dog something to try to get him to throw up the rest of the stuff that they could see on the x-ray, but he wouldn't throw it up. The stuff was stuck. His only chance was for them to do surgery where he had a 50/50 chance of surviving, and he survived. The vet actually passed a kidney stone near the end of the surgery, and another vet had to finish it up. Anyway, I hope your dog will be ok.

keep the dogs, ditch the twins........seems simple.

sounds like you guys stayed in a holiday inn express, so all should be well.  I just feel bad for the dogs.

Vet said at that point she is either going to get better or die.   The vet didn't have 24 hour coverage so she would have been on her own over night.  Wife didn't want her to die on her own.  Vet said it was ok to come get her.  Vet gave us the same meds he would have given if she stayed.  So far she is about the same.  Very tired but again she is 9 years old.  Could just be her time?

Reminds me of when our Labrador retriever was throwing up shrimp the day after Thanksgiving...shells intact. Who'd thunk giving a dog shrimp with the shell was a bad idea? We had family over, so the mystery remains unsolved.

HTF was it only partially digested a day later?

So many weird things in this story, but hoping your dog recovers quickly.

A burrito is filled with things a dog either can't digest or is just downright poisonous to them.  Onions/garlic, Dairy (sour cream, cheese), and avocados for example.

So unless this was the world's blandest burrito, it's no wonder the dog's stomach couldn't handle it.

It's really easy to look up the things you can't feed your pet.  It's something every pet owner (and their kids) needs to do.

My guess is it was stuck in the esophagus and never made its way to the stomach.
Could be possible?  Like I said they both just gulp food down as fast as possible.  Doesn't even matter if we feed them away from each other.   Just going to have to give them very small portions several times a day.
