End of the Age of Running QBs in NFL? (1 Viewer)

Could anyone get the stats for the total number of rushing yards in the NFL by QB's per year?

We used to have about 5 QB's rush for 200 yards...last year there were 12.
Here's what I show for the 2007-2014 (Total and Yds per QB):

2007 - 4080 - 63.75

2008 - 4577 - 77.58

2009 - 4567 - 77.41

2010 - 5687 - 96.39

2011 - 5687 - 103.20

2012 - 6749 - 132.33

2013 - 7427 - 137.54

2014 - 4782 - 97.59
2014 pro-rates to 6376 - 129.79.

Doesn't look like QB rushing is going anywhere.

I really see no upside to a running QB in today's game because of the things that can happen, most are bad and you lose your "usually" most important player to injury. On the flip-side, there is little downside to pocket QBs because if they are a pocket QB they likely fit the general expectation of being tall, big arm, etc, and with the rules today, you can't touch a QB and tee off on them like you could before.

Years ago, the advantage to the running QB was being able to offset the defensive pass rush and move the pocket. QBs were getting knocked out of games on a regular basis back in the day if they couldn't run. But today, who cares? You can't hit them so why bother.

...when I think of a running QB I think of a guy who's legs come before his arm...
Okay, so who exactly are you arguing/disagreeing with? I can't think of anyone that has ever argued that a QB that's run-first minded will ever be successful in the NFL.

Going back a little more is actually interesting. 2004-2009 were down from prior years.

87, 89 and 90 were up largely due to Cunningham. Then back down for the most part and then rising up again from 99-02 primarily due to a combination of McNabb, McNair, and Culpepper, and to a lesser extent Garcia, Gannon, and Kordell Stewart (and Vick for 1 year).

3 out of the 4 QB's in the championship games today ran for at least 250 yards this year - Wilson (842), Luck (268), and Rodgers (255).

All averaged over 5 YPC rushing.

They are also not "running QBs" (barring Wilson, although I'd argue he still looks to pass first also) - they look to pass first, and have the athletic ability to run when the situation calls for it.

Exactly. Big difference between these guys and 'playground' QBs. A mobile QB is obviously an advantage however.

That was my point - the mobile QB is not going anywhere. All the top young QB's have at least some running ability. Even Foles can run a little bit.

Now you are going too far. "Cement Feet" Foles can run for a first down, it just takes him half an hour to do it.

Is this the PC way to say black QBs aren't getting it done anymore?
Thought had not even crossed my mind.

I guess some (most?) folks have moved beyond that small minded view?
Russ Wilson is black and no one is writing him off. He's probably thought of by many/most as a future elite QB, if anything.
Opposite end of the spectrum is Tim Tebow. Proving that QBs need to be able to pass first, regardless of race.
:goodposting: to the last two posts here.
