ERic Barton quietly finished as LB20 last year with 93 tackles, and now rejoins Mangini in Cleveland.

Thoughts on the Cleveland scheme and how things shake out with him, D'Qwell and Leon Williams? Was he brought into start, and will he be in a good position to rack up tackles this year?

Definitely seems like he's enamored himself to Mangini... wondering what his upside is in this defense?

I had him in one league as a cheap backup the last few years (depending on who I draft, behind Harrison, Lofton, Crowder and Timmons). He doesn't seem to have much trade value though so seems like he might be flying well under the radar still... could be a nice cheap option to add in other leagues.

I don't think Barton is much of a "big play-sack" guy but racks up a lot of tackles. So if your league rewards tackles, then he is a good guy to grab late.

Would certainly seem that Mangini etal didn't care for the tape they saw on Andra Davis and Leon Williams and may not be projecting much for Beau Bell this year. Barton may end as veteran depth, but you'd have to think he's a heavy favorite to start at LILB next to D'Qwell Jackson and play an every down role unless the Browns find a couple of versatile OLB from out of nowhere. I think he could give Jackson plenty of competition for tackles.

so Barton probably ends up bringing DQJax's value down a bit then is what I'm thinking?
I don't know if I'd go that far. It's not clearly obvious, but Jackson hasn't significantly out-soloed his LILB platoon partners. The bulk of his increased value came from an unusual number of solo tackles and the first steady big play season of his career. If Barton is an every down player, the difference will appear more dramatic to most. But even last year, Jackson had only four more solos than the Williams/Davis platoon (96-92). He trailed the LILB position in each of his first two seasons.I think Jackson can still get to 90 solos, especially if the safety position struggles to contribute in run support, but I think a drop of 20 assisted tackles is easily possible.

his assist totals seemed almost ridiculous to the point that I wonder if they were somehow inflated by odd scorekeeping

Jene - Do you think Barton has any value beyond this year? I need to make a decision on extending his contract beyond this year: 16 teams, start 3 LBs, 2 pts per tackle, real cheap contract.
I don't see much long term value here. I suppose there's a scenario where Barton plays a Farrior-like veteran role for a couple of extra years, though, so a real cheap contract might be worth the roster spot.
