At this juncture, the only point I find worthy of discussion is what the likely penalty will be, and whether that likely penalty is sufficient.
I heard back from one of my contacts close to the Pats, and there is apparently talk of a hefty fine, loss of picks (as in more than one), and a suspension for BB. The severity of each is what seems to be in question. None of this should be considered even close to official. That appears to be the talk that's circulating in Foxoboro, and while this can only be filed under "unsubstantiated rumors," I personally would think this will end up being the outcome. And we'll just have to wait and see what the specifics are. If I had more info, I'd post it, but that's all I've got . . .
Thanks for the update, David- I think the Pats should be (and sounds like they are) preparing for the worst.I think a minimum is the picks I mentioned and a low 5 figure fine.I think the maximum is high picks - their 1st in '08 and 1st in '09, mid six figures (500G), plus a four game suspension of BBEverything in between is fair game and, IMO, where it lies on that spectrum will tell you how badly or how well the Pats were able to spin this for Goodell. I think some kind of suspension of BB is inevitable, but that is just me.
If I were to guess, $500,000 fine, loss of 3rd and 5th round picks (maybe a 2nd and a 4th instead), and 2 game suspension for BB. I suppose a case could be made that player suspensions are normally 4 games, so maybe they hit him with that instead.I think taking away a first round pick may be excessive. Unless they prohibit BB from interacting with the team AT ALL for however long he would be suspended for, that part would be effectively useless. He could coach a game from anywhere by telephone. So they would have to basically lock him in an empty room during the actual game to prevent him from coaching.
I think this is in the ballpark of what it will be. I'd guess 4 game suspension, $250K fine, and a 2nd and 4th.
Keep dreaming, fellas.
We'll see soon enough. What's your prediction?

Why do you say this? I can't speak for everyone, but I am going off of reports from analysts whose job it is to know a heck of a lot more about this kind of stuff than we do.I'll echo Banger - what is your prediction?

I think they should have to forfiet the game who knows if they were able to block pick up blitzes better becuase, things like that. As a Football coach if I knew where the Def is coming from I can change my blocking schemes, Keep a back in to block, Run away from the plays I can take advantage of the Def. Look how close it was at half time then I know Kick Return you cant help but the offense was all over the place in the 2nd half............ THEY CHEATED.. I like Forfiet, Cost them a 2nd and 4th and suspend Butt Head Bill.. Esp since they did this last year at GB and who knows how much more. The reason they should get this much of a hit on the team is they KNEW IT IS CHEATING....

I don't think this is even a possibility. In my mind to forfeit a game there would have to be a definitive link that the cheating altered the outcome of the game which I don't think could ever be proven.

for what it's worth, I just heard Keyshawn Johnson on ESPN radio offering up this whole thing as nothing more than "advanced scouting", film and all, and refused to call BB a cheater. He was adamant about how common place it is, and was ripping talk radio and internet gossip for blowing the whole thing beyond proportion. Of course, two of the coaches he's played for are Parcells (with Belichick) and Gruden, both of which Im sure would push the envelope beyond its limit. Doesnt matter one way or the other, but it was definitely interesting to listen to.

The commish probably does not have the power to order this in a situation like this, nor would he order it given the circumstances - so it is not worth talking about.

I put my prediction in black and white for all to criticize so why don't you do the same? You're right I could be way off but it's pretty weak to take jabs at others without posting what you're thoughts are.

In that case, now that Mangini has taken the gloves off, I imagine we will see a bunch of whistle-blowing, and teams caught, over the course of the season, right?

From what I can tell, forfeiting the game is not even entering the discussion.

who knows, but I doubt it. Im sure everyone will want to put this whole thing to rest and move on with the season. 'Whistle-blowing' can get pretty ugly, and imo it reflects as poorly on the blower as it does the blowee. From some of the info gathered, this was as much a case of Belichick simply being defiant against the NFL as anything. Prior to the season, cameras were obviously allowed on the sidelines and no official restrictions were placed on their use. And BB's attitude was basically, "screw you, Im gonna do what I want". If he was truly worried about the severity of the consequences, he would have just filmed their signals from upstairs.... like they'll be doing from now on, Im sure.

Might as well take a guess:

Pats lose a 1st and 3rd and 250K fine

Goddell ought to set forth guidelines so that the punishment is the same whether it is Bill getting caught or someone with a better public perception such as Jeff Fisher, Andy Reid ( his kids notwithstanding), joe gibbs, Mangini, Cowher when he comes back next year etc.

Does anybody have an insider's sense as to what the timeline is here? Is the Goodell expected to hand down a decision yet this week, or is this going to drag out beyond that?

I read Friday in the newspaper, but who knows what that's worth?I could see it dragging into next week, but I think the NFL would like to see this go away as soon as possible.

naturally. the last thing that guy wants to do is suit up against Tom Brady on the road in January. cant say I blame him.

I imagine at least a partial decision will come down before the weekend. If it drags out further that means there is something more involved than just the camera and BB will probably be suspended indefinitely pending the outcome of the investigation. That's my guess anyway. The longer it takes the worse off it is for the Patriots.

I think it is funny to read editorials this a.m. from both the Providence Journal and NY Times. Noone except Pats fans here are trying to justify Belichick's actions. Players, other coaches, GMs, and the press are all lining up against the Pats. Don't you all find it funny that not a single player, coach or GM from the 31 other teams is saying "Yeah, the Pats have been known for this, but so have other teams."
This is not true. NFL Live just had a feature on this, and Golic and Salisbury were unanimous in saying that this was not that big a deal. Keyshawn said this happens all the time. The former players, for the most part, seem to be saying that this is commonplace. It should come as no surprise that current players are keeping their mouths shut. If you were the head coach of a team that also did this, would you want your players to say, guys, come on, we do this all the time? Of course not.

It should be noted that Keyshawn and BB are friends, so consider that when evaluating Keyshawn's comments.I'll throw out my prediction:

2008 3rd round pick and a half-mil fine with a warning that if he's caught again doing this, a suspension will be given in addition to additional draft picks and fines.

On a related note, the league needs to use this opportunity to prepare a punishment for a more severe case of espionage: stealing the headset transmissions. It's one thing to decipher signals (which coaches can change up anyway and actually use them to screw the thieves), but completely another to eavesdrop on conversations.

No sweat, but the man has a point. Knocking someone else's predictions is a bit more interesting when you put your own predictions out there.
I don't really care about his or anyone else's predictions. It could be anything from a fine of $20 to 3 draft picks and suspensions. All I'm saying is I think most are going to be disappointed because of how the rule can be and was interpreted. It's more media sensationalism now than really a major violation. It morally became so offensive because of the technology being used. Stealing is accepted and condoned. Even though it is stealing, provided you earn your cheating, it's ok. Since NE is doing something no one else did, thought of, or will admit to, the world will try to hang them out to dry. Public beheading! I'm just saying watch. It won't be that bad and in the long term this will be a little blip on the radar. I think that will make alot of you mad. Just because Goodell came down hard on PacMan, Vick, and Tank Williams, does not mean this will be handled the same. This was not a felony charge, although publicly it was treated like murder or kidnapping with the outrage of the perceived "cheating." "Cheat Within Reason"

They are a saying stealing signals is commonplace. Trying to videotape them is not. Please, we are all reading and watching the same stuff here  . There is a legitimate debate on the impact of said cheating, but no analyst, player, or coach not associated with the Patriots has pointed out any other team videotaping defensive signals in real-time.

I haven't seen any part of that rule quoted that wasn't crystal clear, and neither has anyone else. This 'rule interpretation' thing is grasping at straws, plain and simple. Some fun quotes from that Dr. Z article, linked above:

Last year the Lions played the Patriots in Foxboro. At one point their coach, Rod Marinelli, phoned up to the press box, "There's a camera pointed right at our defensive coach making his calls. Is that allowed?" A Lions' employee called the NFL booth. No, it certainly was not. So the videotaper was stopped. Then after a while he began again. The same process was repeated and he was asked to stop again. Now that's dedication.

"At one point we had a good drive going against the Patriots," said one Lion who doesn't want his name involved in this mess, but was willing to talk about it. "Mike Martz really had 'em going. They were getting fouled up, lining up wrong, we were moving the ball. Then boom, the headset from the sidelines to the coaches' booth goes out.

"Next possession we were moving the ball again and the same thing happened. You know it only takes two or three plays to mess up a drive."

Matt Millen, the Lions' GM, was talking to Bengals' coach Marvin Lewis at the league meetings. He started telling him the story.

"Yeah, I know," Lewis said. "Headset went out. It happened to me in Foxboro, too."

Marinelli was the defensive line coach in Tampa Bay when the Bucs beat the Patriots in the 2000 regular season opener and did a good job controlling New England's offense. After the game the Patriots' offensive coach, Charlie Weis, was overheard congratulating the Bucs' defensive coordinator, Monte Kiffin.

"We knew all your calls, and you still stopped us," Weis said. "I can't believe it."

He couldn't believe it because the Patriots had videotaped all of the defensive signals in their last preseason game, which was against the Bucs.

I can't believe that some are trying to paint this as a amoral...If BB were found to be betting on the Jets game, then fine... crucify him and the Patriots organization. I'll even help.

NFL live peeps were outraged by this...so i guess opinions vary...wow

OBVIOUSLY Dr. Z must Hate the Pats.

This part is interesting....

As a former Patriots employee, Jets coach Eric Mangini must have known what was going on. So why didn't he have some kind of system of dummy calls set up to foul up the video surveillance?

"He did," says a former Patriots employee whose name cannot be used for obvious reasons. "He had three sets of signals being given, one real, two dummy. He had the same thing going when he beat the Patriots last year. But still, it means extra work, changing the way you prepare for a game. It means both clubs are not playing on the same level field, and that's what's wrong about it."

I asked the former Patriot, who knows the organization well, if Mangini could in any way be held responsible for being part of a system that encouraged cheating. He paused for a moment to decide how to get this right.

"You have to understand that organization," he said. "You have to understand how incredibly tight the ring is. Information is not just passed around. Even if you might be aware of something, you're not going to know exactly how everything works. Eric was an employee there. He was not privy to every decision. His own operation was clean. Sure, he knew other stuff was going on, but how was he supposed to handle it?

"The amazing thing is the incredible arrogance they showed, coming into Giants Stadium, facing an organization with all those ex-Patriots employees, and still trying to cheat."

So, this isn't the rule?No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game.

I'm guessing loss of a 1st rounder this year, a 3rd rounder next year, $250,000 fine and a one-game suspension for Belichick.

Unlike others, I'm of the belief that the league feels this issue goes much deeper than Belichick and falls more under the category of "lack of institutional control" that the NCAA uses in their punishments to college football programs that run afoul of the rules. My guess is they will come down far harder on the organization for fostering the environment under which Belichick cheated than the actual cheater himself.

Im curious, why do people seem to think that a suspension of BB would be harsher than a loss of draft picks? Seems to me that a suspension only effects the organization for the duration whereas a loss of a draft pick can effect the Pats for years to come. Also, it is directly targeted at the person most directly responsible for the violative conduct.

Also, it seems the their potential RF infractions are being completely overlooked, but they could infact be the worst part of this. Intercepting signals to evasdrop or purposefully interfering with signals at critical moments seems fairly indefensible.

It will be all of the above in some form. Draft picks, fine, suspension. I think the degree is up for debate, but if this did occur people had to be in the know from top to bottom.
