ESPN reporting that Ricky Williams is retiring (1 Viewer)

As a Viking fan, O-Gun would be a nice addition, but I really hate giving up any of our RBs. Its great to have the depth that Bennett, O, and Moe give. Hate to say it, but between Bennett and O, I think I'd give up Bennett. O seems like the better all around RB while Bennett is a speed home run hitter like Robert Smith. Maybe we can trade Larry Ned for O-Gun. :D

We've had good RB's before and haven't been to a Super Bowl since the 70's.Trade some depth at RB NOW for the PURPLE PEOPLE EATERS (New Millenium edition) :excited:

Or we could just keep all our RB's and solve our D-Line problems by finally signing Brock Lesnar. :suds:

Woodard and Moore are THAT bad? I'd think the upgrade from Okeafor to Ogunleye at LDE would be too good to pass up.
Okeafor had 9 sacks last year. He's not that bad. Plus, they gave Antonio Cochran a 4yr/$10M contract last year with a $3M signing bonus.Combine the salaries of Okeafor, Cochran, and Brandon Mitchell and you get about $3.5 Million.main point is that I don't think they'd want to spend as much as Ogunleye would cost right after giving Wistrom that ridiculous contract. They use Chad Brown as a DE on passing downs frequently, so they should be able to get by with what they have. With Alexander scheduled for free agency in 2005, it makes more sense to keep their young backup RB and to keep some financial flexibility.

Just made an offer in my keeper league last week for Ricky, thank god he declined I think I'll email him and thank him personally. :D

forget michael bennett/onterrio, they should go after willy green or anthony thomas, both of who are still underrated.

Im just lucky I only had Ricky in one of my Dynasty Leagues. I will have to rely on LT2 and Edge to pick up the slack. Damn Ricky!! :Finger:

It's Lenny Kravitz's fault...

This is not some whim. Williams has been weighing this with friends for months and finally told an angry, crushed Dave Wannstedt on Friday night. Williams' decision was clinched while on tour recently in Europe with rocker friend Lenny Kravitz, who is so consumed with working and fame's responsibilities that he doesn't have much time for joy, or for himself. That's not what Williams wants to become of his own life. Williams says with conviction that no one will talk him into coming back, even though Wannstedt continues to try.

In a three player keeper league I tried to trade R. Williams straight up for R. Moss and in a separate deal with a different team -- straight up for M. Harrison (both teams were very weak at RB). Sadly, both turned me down :bag:

Dolphin fan here (as many of you know) and I am shocked at this, but overall not so surprised. RW marched to the beat of his own drummer, and I applaud anyone who can do things on his terms.Miami will either go with what they got or use next year's draft picks to get someone. They will NOT trade O-gun for anyone because that defeats the purpose of what they are trying to accomplish this year, namely a Super Bowl. I think Miami has traded well in the past with Minny, Carolina, Oakland, and Seattle so one of the above mentioned guys may be their target, or they may go with Minor, Morris, and the guy from europe (drawing a blank) and see what happens.New England managed to win without a real RB, so maybe the Miami offensive staff will need to get more creative (FINALLY!)If the phins suck next year (they still have a good D so who knows), there are plenty of good RBs in the draft next year.Jesus, I am talking about next year, this is really depressing.Gator

As a Favre and Ahman Green owner, and Lions fan, I really hope MN doesn't get O-gun.But it makes a lot of sense for them to trade either Bennet or SOD for him. The other, Moe and Moore are plenty of depth and MN needs to improve their D.Imagine the line - Udeze, Hovan, K Williams and O-gun

There was a crappy show on CBS a couple of years back called "Early Edition". I caught all of one episode when I was killing time at a friend's house. The premise was that the main character magically got tomorrow's newspaper delivered to his house a day early, thus he knew what would happen one day into the future.Any Ricky Williams dynasty owners wish they had that magic newspaper?
I liked that show. :bag:

Travis Minor is a talented back that has been cast off by Wanny ever since he steped onto the Dolphins. I think that it is great that he will now get a shot. He may lack size but so do half the backs in the NFL. It will be interesting to see what the Dolphins do. They should spread the ball out more but it is Wanny that we are talking about.

This BITES! I am in a one-player keeper league and Williams was going to be my keeper (luckily we haven't drafted yet). Now I'm stuck with gimpy knee Faulk (as long as his retirement rumors aren't true) and I'll have to overpay for Stephen Jackson - UGH!!! My only other reasonable options are Hasselbeck and McNair but I'd have to be really desperate to keep a QB. What a way to start the Fantasy season! :wall:

Why do the Vikes need O-Gun seems like the last O-Gun talk there was before the draft. They have a young rotation but I think they grabed two of the top DL in the draft (Udeze and Darrion Scott). It does not seem like there is any need for O-Gun and they should keep the depth at RB at this point.

Dallas, as much as I hate to admit it, is much closer to seeing a Super Bowl than Miami was even before RW made his announcement.
The Cowboys are not going to the Super Bowl with Quincy Carter/Vinny Testaverde at QB. I'd bet my life on it.
That's easy to say Aaron, as there are more than 30 teams in the NFL. However, I'd bet that you would have said the same thing about Jake Delhomme/Rodney Peete last year too or were you high on those guys in preseason? If it's one thing I've learned in life, the older I get, the more I realize I don't know as much as I thought.Dallas was 10-6, they've made some improvements on the team. If you'd bet your life that they wouldn't make the S. B., so be it. But I value my life a lot more than that.

Hey Gator,I read that you applaud those that march to the beat of a different drum. I guess I do too. However, don't you have to have certain ethics in general.I mean, Ricky Williams has basically left his teammates out to dry. You can say everyone can do what they want in life. But what about when later in life he has to look those guys in the face. There are some football players on that team who are trying to accomplish something, and he basically let these guys hang out to dry. This is a business blah, blah, there are people on these teams. If he would have retired after last season, said I've had enough. No problem. Good luck in life.Miami could have drafted differently. Even a couple weeks ago they could have brought in freaken Eddie George or Antwan Smith. NO, this guy waits till the end of July and bails. I'm not saying you applaud this behavior, because I certainly don't. This isn't marching to the beat of a different drum, this is quitting on your teammates. Let's at least call it what it is!Quitter

I hope one of Ricky's goals wasn't to make it Canton.Would YOU draft Ricky in the later rounds of a keeper league?

Absolutely.A retired Ricky has more upside than your 8th WR who you will never put into your lineup.

A few of us are already flinging some smack your way on the league message board.

Chris Chambers for Justin Fargas!

Makes perfect sense...
David Boston for Onterrio Smith seems much more interesting.
Could you imagine Moss and Boston on the same team?!? What if they both decided to "take some time off" at the same time?!? :rotflmao:

Great post, and this matches my initial thoughts on this 100%.I'm sure other people have already pointed out the parallel to Barry Sanders earlier in the thread.

I don't think anybody's mentioned this scenario yet:Miami treads water this year with what they have and maybe adding J.Stewart, and signs free agent E.James next year. There's a chance the Colts can't afford him and Harrison both. He's from Florida, played at Miami and seemed dying to go there a year or so ago, Seems like a good fit. Just my $0.02

I think a trade with Minny for O. Smith or Bennett would be good targert. I think they would ask for Def players not Off players. Other teams that have decent 2nd backs are CHi,Hou and NYJ.

Anyone know the salary implications of a trade? I know the signing bonus would be accelerated for the team that trades the RB, but does it count half this and half next?
Not sure if this has been answered yet but I think it's just like being released. Since it's after June 1 then future years will be accelerated to next year.

This could happen. I'm not confident that Indy can keep both Edge and Harrison.

 On a side note without starting another thread....Where and when will RW get drafted this year in partial keeper leagues. (Keep 2 or three. You know someone will take him.)

WOW...I'd be so pissed if I were the Dolphins. The guy waits until 1 week before camp to tell them. What a classless move by RW.

Dolphin fan here and this sucks, but if RW doesn't want to play then I can't blame him for walking away. You guys that are pissed about it are just thinking of yourselves. Sure it may be easy going to your 9-5 job and sitting on your couch on Sundays watching football. Try hours in the weight room, 2 a days in the Florida sun, and getting tackled by a bunch of 250 pound muscleheads. I'd rather be in Asia smoking weed too. If he knew before he should have let them know, but he didn't know, and it sounds like he had told them it was a possibility.OK, the fins have a good relationship with Tampa. In fact, they have joint practices and scrimmages during the preseaseon. Tampa has Garner, Pittman, White, and Allstot. How about getting another flake like Pittman after he serves his suspension?I really like the A-train too by the way. Had him on my team last year and he is very good. He was the scapegoat for Chicago's offensive problems and doesn't fit with Lovie Smith's new scheme.

Who were the players that New Orleans drafted with Miami's two first round picks? I believe Charles Grant was one.

The second #1 was packaged along with another #1 to move up 10 spots in round one to draft DT Jonathon Sullivan.

As much as I can't stand Dave Wannstedt....This offseason has got to be one of the worst for any head coach.Go through the list of BS that he's gone through. It's unfathomable.Bump up the New England D/ST, as they don't have any 'top level' RBs to face in their division now.

Last time Miami didn't have a winning season? 1996Last time Miami had a losing season? 1988Number of losing seasons since 1976? 1Since the merger, Miami has never won less than six games in any season.Last top ten pick? 1992-- Troy Vincent

For the most part I would agree, but the combination of Henry and McGahee (if he's healthy) could prove to be a difficult one for most defenses - including New England's.

That's definitely worked out well for the Saints, even though they've been in the same boat as the Dolphins in terms of team success.Trading away Ricky Williams allowed Deuce McAllister to become a feature back and brought in two cornerstone defensive linemen (if Sullivan turns into the player that he should be).Miami remains pretty much where they were before the trade. One thing lost in all of the Ogunleye talk is the fact that they (Dolphins) don't have anyone to replace him. He's just as valuable (or more valuable) to the Dolphins as he is to every other team looking for a defensive end.

Are you kidding me. The guy can do what he wants period. It's not like he is going to be getting paid next year. This is a job. I guess neither of you two have quit your job before and been able to look at your former coworkers in the face.

despite the VERY interesting moral judgments being passed on ricky...perhaps we should be asking ourselves what kind of runningback the 'phins will be looking for to fit their offensive scheme?

And to think, the 1999 Browns were debating between taking Ricky Williams and Tim Couch #1 overall. Looks like no matter what their choice was, he would've been gone this year.

Obviously there are a lot of rumors out there but I found these 2 articles interesting. Could it be that this retirement, is to take the focus off a drug suspension, and we could be seeing Ricky later this year?

REST OF THE STORY ON RICKY?

While the media continues to get its beauty sleep, skips out on church in lieu of snarfing Homer Simpson's patented moon waffles, and/or continues to recite "we're stunned" by the announcement that running back Ricky Williams is retiring after only five NFL season, we're bringing you the details, the inside poop, and (as outlined below) the speculation from some league insiders as to what might be going on behind the scenes.

And we must preface the following remarks by emphasizing that this specific blurb is rooted in speculation only.

In a conversation with one league insider this morning, we were reminded of the reported fine of up to $650,000 that the league was set to impose on Williams for violation of the league's "smoky, smoky" policy. If, the insider surmised, Ricky feared arriving at camp and failing given yet another pee test, he would have next faced a four-game suspension and another $650,000 fine. The next violation would have resulted in a one-year suspension.

By walking away voluntarily, Williams avoids a potential outcome that would have placed him on the sidelines for 25 percent of the year anyway, and one step closer to a full-season ban.

If this speculation is accurate, look for Ricky to come back in 2005, or possibly sooner. In theory, he could clean out his system over the next month and show up for the start of the regular season. (Could that reported trip to Asia be a 28-day visit to the Betty Ford-son Center?)

And by filing his retirement papers, Ricky can't be fined for missing camp or the preseason. Instead, he can un-retire in September -- and the team can restore him if it so chooses (and so choose it likely would, given the dearth of other options presently available to it).

Again, this is all speculation. We don't know whether or not Ricky has been puffing on the magic dragon. But the insider who formulated this theory is the same person who told us on the day that the Bucs dumped Darrell Russell that the move likely was the result of yet another violation by Russell of the league's substance abuse policy.

RICKY HAS SEVEN-FIGURE DEBT TO FINS?

A league source tells us that, if Ricky Williams' contract contains language conditioning his signing bonus upon his fulfillment of the deal (a provision found in most NFL deals), then Williams owes the Dolphins in 2004 the sum of $1,249,085, which represents this season's piece of the bonus money he previously received due to his premature retirement.

This specific issue first arose when Barry Sanders abruptly retired from the Lions prior to the 1999 season. Sanders was required by an arbitrator to pay back to the team $1.83 million per year for the remainder of his contract, the prorated annual amount of his bonus.

More recently, the Broncos recovered bonus money from receiver Eddie Kennison, who quit on the team in the middle of the 2001 season.

Earlier in the offseason, the Ravens were prepared to force receiver Terrell Owens to repay bonus money if he refused to report to the team following a trade that ultimately was scuttled via the settlement of his grievance seeking free agency status. Currently, the Packers could recover more than $3 million from cornerback Mike McKenzie if he makes good on threats to retire in lieu of continuing to play for Green Bay.

None of the published reports regarding Williams' retirement have addressed this no-brainer issue, which could give the Dolphins significant leverage in their efforts to get Williams to change his mind.

All speculation and conspiracy theories at this point, but didn't want to miss the chance to add fuel to the fire.
