"Mathews' ankle is the elephant in the room, so until he packs up his trunk and leaves, you should proceed with caution and be sure not to wear peanut-scented aftershave."
It is based on the idea that an elephant in a room would be impossible to overlook; thus, people in the room who pretend the elephant is not there have made a choice. They are choosing to concern themselves with tangential or small and irrelevant issues rather than deal with the looming big one.
Does that make sence in how the term was used??
I would also add that it sounds like someone doesnt have as much faith in Rivers (I certainly do)

My take; He's injured. That ankle, despite the player's comments, has been the "elephant in the room" meaning the shadow reports about "its not actually sprained, i think its ok." are wrong. Thus, it's truly a high ankle sprain and the cat is out of the bag, Ryan isnt playing for a few more weeks.

Anyone think that if Mathews returns, that both both Tolbert and Mathews could be a decent play together this week? I'm thinking of keeping Tolbert at flex if Mathews returns.
Beat writer Kevin Acee sees the release of RB Curtis Brinkley as a sign that Ryan Mathews (ankle) is healthy.
The Chargers are expected to re-sign Brinkley to the practice squad once he clears waivers, so he could always be called back up before Sunday's game against the Cardinals. Regardless, it appears Mathews will be taking reps at practice and is on track to play this week. We'll find out where the rookie is at after today's workout.
The problem is that all it's going to take is one tackle around the ankles or awkward sidestep and he could be back on the sidelines with a re-aggravated injury, and it's much more likely to happen than for a new injury to occur. We've seen this happen over and over again in football.
