Evan Gattis (1 Viewer)

Strasburg threw him all offspeed stuff next time up and struck him out, expect more of that. With young guys they'll see fastballs until pitchers know they can hit them, then they'll get a heavy dose of offspeed stuff.

Oh, of course. Then we'll see if he's just another Jay Gibbons

eta: but I'm just a sucker for a feel good story

No doubt, hope dude rakes for decades.

Stupid cbs only has him as OF eligible and my league requires ten games at a position. He has 8 starts at catcher so i cant start him for another week

Gattis and Buck are both available in my fairly deep league. Thinking of adding one, but not sure who. You guys like this Gattis guy?
I picked him over Buck a few days ago, and I still would.

Gattis is clearly the riskier pick, but I think he's also the upside pick. We've always known Buck could go hit HRs while hurting your OBP or AVG.

20 HRs with a terrible OBP/AVG describes many, many catchers. I think Gattis has a chance to offer the same power with better OB skills, which is a lot harder to find.

The AB problem coming up is real, but worst case scenario, when McCann gets back, you find one of the decent power/low OBP catchers on the wire to platoon with Gattis.

If this was a really deep league, I might lean towards Buck, but if both guys are still available, I'll assume solid C options can be found later too.

Is This Guy Gonna Fade Big Time Or Possibly Keep It Up?
He won't keep "this" up, but I think he's got a solid shot to be a bottom half of the top 10 C's.

I wouldn't go trading Rosario, Montero, or Napoli away for him, but I think he's got a decent shot to finish somewhat on par with them.

The joy ride might be coming to a very abrupt halt.

McCann's raking and he's coming back tomorrow.

With Teheran on the mound today, Gattis may not even get the start today.

Even with the 5 bombs he's hit off RHP this year, his numbers are pretty weak against them (.745 OPS vs. 1.241 against lefties). Braves get 6 righties this week.

Combined with the fact that his 3 main obstacles for playing time at the moment (McCann, Freeman and Schafer) are all lefties, playing time could get real ugly in the short-term. Schafer has actually been playing pretty well lately, and might be the perfect solution at lead-off for ATL (against righties) at the moment. This is in addition to the fact that any talk of ABs from playing LF are still just talk as Gattis has never actually played OF at the MLB level.

Not a ton of reason to put Gattis in the lineup vs. righties. In fact, his best role on 80% of nights is probably a lethal pinch hitter.

I think Gattis will have his hiccups, but be a very valuable bat for ATL over the course of the season, but his fantasy value could take a nosedive starting today.

:goodposting:

He had the opportunity to force their hand but didn't produce enough.

Evan Gattis is batting fifth and playing left field in Monday evening's series-opener against the Reds.
It will be his first time playing the outfield in a major league game. Brian McCann (shoulder) is catching and batting sixth in his first game back from the disabled list, and Justin Upton is playing right field and hitting third. The Braves will do all they can to keep Gattis active but the return of McCann does dent his fantasy value.
Giving him more time...

Yeah, I'm pessimistic, but I'm not cutting him until my assumptions about what'll happen come true.

I absolutely hate having to carry a 2nd catcher, but I think he's got enough upside to play this out.

If he stinks in the OF, that'll be a huge problem, but there might still be a little Angels era Napoli upside still in play here. Even as a pinch hitter with a lot of runners on, he could turn in some nice value.

He's been on fire his last 6 ABs: 3/6, 3 Rs, 3 HRs, 7 RBI.

In all seriousness, they need to find a way to get him in the lineup more. If he can get to 400 ABs, he'd have 56 Rs, 33 HRs, 89 RBI. Let's say 50, 30 and 80 with some regression. At 500 ABs, 60, 35, 95 with some regression.

Yeah, I've held on to him as a back-up sliding him in when he starts. He's such a great pinch-hitter, so I may just cut my "starter". It'll kill me in games played at C, but his occasional "1 for 1 with a HR and 2 RBI" is better than what I can get from a Perez or Salty on most days (or weeks). He's kind of got that Angels-era Napoli feel to him.I'm honestly not sure it makes sense to get him a ton more ABs. There's value in having a great pinch-hitter in your pocket for those big ABs late in the game.
