Everth Cabrera SS, SD (1 Viewer)

Nice call. I think I am going to take a chance on him.

Although it was only single A ball where he swiped 73 bags, he still apparently led all players at any professional level last year. He also stole 9 bases in spring training this year, which was tied for third behind only Michael Bourn and Juan Pierre. He's also a Rule V pick so the Padres are basically obligated to keep him on the 25-man roster for the season. Cabrera has started the last 3 games at SS since being activated from the DL, and Luis Rodriguez hasn't shown much ability to compete at SS this season (.203 average, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 11 runs). The Padres seem to really like the speed that Cabrera brings to the lineup and hopefully will take advantage of it. Although the sample size is limited and he has hardly played above single A ball, Cabrera has hit well so far in the majors this season (7 for 24, .292 average, 1 2B, 1 3B) as well as during his A and AAA rehab assignent (18 for 50, .360 average, 12 runs, 4 RBIs, 5 SBs).

I'm going to go ahead and drop Emilio Bonafacio, my previous source of Middle Infield speed who, in addition to not being able to hit, hasn't even been able to steal bases succesfully lately.

Pads love this kid. He'll start at short every game for the next 5 years in SD if he can hit. His arm is Dunston-esque, and he has wheels, but not sold on his bat yet. He looks like a young Furcal to me.

Added in two leagues, but didn't have the guts to start him in the one that I could. At least Scutaro went yard and Hairston swiped a bag.

This kid may be what I needed to finally send Kelly Johnson to where he belongs. The pool.

Has it been confirmed he will be the full time starter? Currently I have Edgar Renteria as my MI after Joe Reyes went down (best 50 bucks I ever spent in an auction). I could use some steals.

I read online that Manager Bud Black said that Cabrera would get most of the starts at shortstop on a San Diego sports radio talk show Monday morning. He has started all four games since being activated from the DL. I expect that Rodriguez will likely get occasional starts, but as of now it looks like Everth will get the lion's share of the work at SS.

Great tip! I am going to need another speed guy to replace Pierre once Manny comes back. Looks like Cabrera might be my guy.

This. That being said, Cabrera is a Rule 5 guy making the jump from Single A to the bigs. While he's looked great thus far, a 2 for 30 slump could happen at any time to a guy making this kind of adjustment. Nothing we've seen thus far indicates that will happen, but buyer beware.

I can handle the slump, and him hitting 8th. I just need the steals. He can hit .240 as long as he is running.

Batting leadoff today.

His average is pitiful, but he has 4 stolen bases in his last 4 games. Now I have to decide whether to bench him and insert Alberto Callaspo.
