Every year's Indy 500 thread (1 Viewer)

I know Indy has passed from its place in the national consciousness that it used to have. It used to be like the Kentucky Derby, that event that is the only one from the sport that you pay attention to even if you don't otherwise follow the sport. But it seems like those days are mostly gone with the current generations.

It's still a thing for me though. Grew up on the Michigan-Indiana border, with Indiana stations that couldn't broadcast the race live due to blackout rules. So we listened to it on the radio then watched the TV replay later in the evening. Always preferred an oval track over sharp turns, just feel like they break up a flow of a race.

It's a family thing and a nostalgia thing for me and the highlight of Memorial Day weekend. And I'm looking forward to it after a rough week or two. So, here's :banned: for Indy and enjoying the race. Cheers to anyone else who is going to settle in for a few hours of joy at the Brickyard.

Gentlemen, start your engines!

Unlikely starting 27th, but would love to see Castroneves win a 5th.

Yea was looking for a O’Ward, Palou, Veekay finish…Mexico, Spain, Netherlands…just like the Monaco GP finish this morning.

Everyone talks about the Indy 500 - CocaCola 600 double. Would it be possible to do the Monaco GP -  CocaCola 600 double?  I guess there's still not enough time(7 hours?) to pull it off

Still big around Central Il but with the Coca Cola 600 in the evening and Nascars recent popularity boom def lost some national exposure. Many friends have been to over 30 races. I love the track and have been to about 15 Indy's 3 or 4 Brickyards and 2 F1's. Great times at all.

I watched the Cubs Sox rec league softball game however haha

There's a nascar boom, I thought that things levelled off on the downward slide

I wished I missed the softball game, betting under 8.  Sick loss.

I’m one of those people that have been going to the race since I was a kid and never misses being there every year. Living near or Indianapolis helps for sure. My dad started taking me when I was 10 and I’ve been taking my daughter since she was about the same age.
This year’s race doesn’t rank among the greatest ones I’ve been to but it was a fun race and we enjoyed every lap of it like every year.
Marcus Ericsson isn’t one of the big names in Indycar racing but he ran in the top 5 all day, didn’t make any mistakes and was the fastest car on the track during the final laps of the race.

Had never seen a red flag before.   Didn't produce the drama I was hoping for
Would've probably been better if there were 6-10 laps left.  it was basically 2-3 laps only so not enough time to break out any big passing moves. One was tried and was close, but failed.

So I was kind of jazzed to see a rookie won the pole for the Indy 500. Only the third time that has happened.

But now the race is a bit soured by a cheating scandal. Team Penske was found to have modified their cars illegally. You're not allowed to change much on an Indy car, they are all made by the same company and 90% of the car can't be modified. They filled in some seams and added clear coat to reduce friction, then tried to remove it during time trials in a stretch when no modifications at all can be made.

The drivers, Newgarden and Will Powers, were moved to the back two spots of the starting field, plus fines. And Roger Penske fired the various team leadership.

Penske also owns the race track and the race itself, and it's also the second time in a year that the team has been penalized for cheating. In 2024 they hacked the software so their drivers could use the boost outside of the normal conditions it's allowed.

So yeah, quite a black eye for this year's race. :(

I mean it doesn't affect the race at all now. The guys' cars will be correct and they start at the back. Penske fired the cheaters, so it feels like I'm not gonna dwell much.

All about Larson for me anyway!

Yeah it won't stop me from watching, or enjoying the race. But disappoints me that for a race that has faded in the public conscious over the years, this is probably going to be what gets much of the publicity.

Got a late start on the day and didn't start watching recording until probably 2 hours after what was supposed to be the start. Wow, what a different race that was. All the problems cars had in the first half, and then running almost half the race under green until the final straightaway.

Found myself cheering for Malukas, but Palou was pretty deserving with how he ran the race.
