Experience drafting with Football Guys (1 Viewer)

Red Wirenuts

I’ve used the zero rb approach for drafting in the past. However, it’s the teams with solid rb’s leading my league. It’s a 14 team, full PPR, 3 wide receivers, 2 runningbacks, 2 flex. I’m assuming those using Football Guys have used the VBD style in the past. How have you fared on average?

I'm almost always going RB heavy in my drafts.  VBD can be a form of zero RB - it depends on where you are in the draft order.  Basically don't really have a strategy before you go in - if everybody is RB heavy then scoop up the top WRs.  If everybody is WR heavy then scoop up the better RBs.  Let the draft come to you.  Work the waiver wire.  (But I'm guessing the waiver wire is pretty thin with so many teams and so many starters - if everybody drafts 20 players then the chances are that there are no league winners ever on the WW, assuming people drafted well).

This year's consensus top 4 RBs were CMC, Barkley, Kamara, and Zeke.  If you drafted there and took one of them you're probably doing well.  If you were drafting at the 14-15 turn, then WR-WR made more sense in many cases, strictly on a VBD basis.

Zero RB as a strategy is based on the idea that RB's have a higher likely of injury (Kamara and Barkley both missed time just out of those 4), so the chances of going bust on a high RB is pretty good.  But you have to stock up on numerous RB's in the later rounds and be very aggressive on the waiver wire, so when an RB does get hurt you're standing there holding his replacement.

Thanks for the input. That makes total sense. If I can ask you one more question, do you create your own rankings (pre-draft)? If not, who do you trust most?

I do create my own rankings - mostly an average of rankers that I like.  The FBG statt are good, I also use some others.  Fantasypros is a good place to look to see who are consistently good over the years - check the Expert Accuracy.  I don't rely on projections but on 1-2-3-4 types of ranks.  I think comparing A to B is something humans can generally do well, and it combines all your thinking and gut instinct into a binary choice.  Obviously get much less than 100% right, but that's my approach.  I also listen to A LOT of podcasts.  I don't just want to know you think A is better than B, I want to know why.  And then analyst 2 says no, B is better than A, and hopefully tells me why.  Then I decide for myself who I like better.

This is the flaw with just cheatsheet lists.  You get a ranking but have no idea why someone thinks A is better than B.  The reason is really the most important thing.  I usually go in with standard cheatsheet and use that as a general list.  I research ahead of time and highlight guys I like better than the consensus and vice versa so I can get an idea of where I see value and where I am fine letting higher ranked guys get taken.  Having the standard cheatsheet gives me a sample of how the masses are thinking and many times that is as big a benefit as anything else.
