Explosions at Boston Marathon (1 Viewer)

What is your point pitts?

yes to the first part, more acknowledging the second part. Garbage can removal, even though it my not be an issue here, is rather common place in the post 9/11 world.

I'm not going to rip Obama for not using the word terrorism, but at the same time I'm not sure why some people seem to be implying that it wasn't or might not be. Two explosive devices were planted and triggered to go off right at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Seems to be the textbook definition of terrorism.
Of course. But I think the majority of our society doesn't recognize terrorism by its definition but rather as the tool of angry Muslim extremists. Many people don't equate Ted kazinaky or Tim mcveigh as terrorists the same way they do the 9/11 hijackers.

I say anyone else who mentions Obama, Bush, O'Reilly, Matthews, et al in this thread gets a DayBan. Mods, can I get a hallelujah?
Meh. People deal with things like this in their own way. These threads tend to become a contest to show who's most affected anyway. If you don't like a post just skip it and go on to the next one else you become an inadvertent entrant in the most affected contest. I know that last line is a a tad hypocritical but as long as they're not being an all-time Richard people should be able to say whatever they want here. :2cents:

CNN confirming that it was the pressure cooker with a timing device. More evidence that it was more amateurish than anything else. Saying pressure cooker actually reduces power to an extent.
There's that, but there's also an Al Qaeda bomb-making pamphlet titled "How To Make A Bomb In The Kitchen Of Your Mom" which details pressure-cooker bombs. So there's still the conceivable connection to Mid-East terrorism.
Not saying it rules out an internationally inspired type but that it doesn't seem like a grandiose scheme from AQ or anyone else or that this signifies a failure of intelligence because by all accounts there was no chatter at all about this.
Precisely. If this is a grandiose scheme, we have a serious intelligence failure.
Maybe not. If these were U.S. citizens with no criminal past who took it upon themselves to bomb the marathon, that is about as much an intelligence failure as Sandy Hook. Chatter comes from foreign networks, from understanding potential enemies and monitoring them. We'll see how this turns out but it is impossible for the U.S. to identify all domestic threats and when we try, people freak out about NSA accidentally monitoring their cell phone call. If you want intelligence gathering that is close to 100%, you'd have to give up a lot of your freedoms.
no thanks

To be fair, what do you really need a backpack for at a sporting event?
some people take public transportation to games. probably helps them carry their belongings.I'm guessing it helps for parents who bring their kids too.

I say we ban sporting events and any other event where people may gather.
Wouldn't it be easier to just ban people all together?

Most running events I have been involved with have set up these cardboard box-type trash cans anyway (some for trash and some for recycling).

With the volume of people...there have generally been a ton of these near the starts and finishes and aid stations of these things.

Not sure about Boston.

And haven't they now said that it was not in a trash can.

I bike from work to Twins games and when I commute to and from work I have stuff. Other people come right from work and take public transportation. Some people just liek to have stuff with them (change of clothes, some food if the arena/stadium allows you to bring your own in, camera, water bottle, flask, etc.)

Jesus. So the guy saw the bombing, just like 100's of other people, but because he is Saudi, the Daily News feels the need to plaster his face all over the place?

Exactly. Terrible

Although in fairness, the FBI didnt take evidence out of the other 100s of witnesses apartments

A second victim in the Boston Marathon bombings has been identified: Krystle M. Campbell, a 29-year-old from Medford, Mass.

Her father, William A. Campbell Jr., told Yahoo News he's in shock that his daughter was killed.

"My daughter was the most lovable girl. She helped everybody, and I'm just so shocked right now. We're just devastated," he said. "She was a wonderful, wonderful girl. Always willing to lend a hand."

Campbell was at the finish line with a friend to cheer on her boyfriend, who was running the race. William Campbell said he doesn't know if her boyfriend finished the race before the bombs went off.

More than 170 people were wounded17 of them criticallyand three were killed in the attacks.

The other identified victim, 8-year-old Martin Richard, was running away from the first explosion with his family when the second blast killed him. His mother and 6-year-old sister were injured in the blast as well.

You keep #####ing about sequestration. What are you guys getting paid for; to count the bodies?
I think you and MOP should create a thread and you two can ####### ramble on about nonsense together
???I ask why there where trashcans there (initial reports) and I get ridiculed as some over protective worrywort who wants to limit freedoms. I point out that those levels of security are rather commonplace, after it is somehow denied, and I am portrayed as part of the problem; from people who claim a special insight to security. So I asked what was the role they see for themselves if it isn't to protect. Surely there isn't anyone who can argue that a garbage can is a nice place to deposit a bomb.

Truly terrible stories.
The guy in the wheelchair we were talking about is not one of these dudes. Crazy that from a town of 20,000, three young men each lost limbs. :sadbanana:
Oh Jesus. Who are the 3? I know about Marc obviously.

By the way - crazy we have been on this board for 10 years plus and we just connected!
Hey Ref - not sure if you saw this or not. Posted on facebook

Got a call from Marc's mom, he is still in critical condition. He was due to go into surgery this morning to try and save his left leg and they had to cancel it because they found pieces of metal around his heart.

Hard to believe the nonsense people in here are fighting about when stuff like this is posted in here.

Get a grip people.

I notice you didn't use the word "terrorism". Way to hate America, Oat.

Most acts of domestic terrorism are lone wolf-types. Eventhough McVeigh had Nichols, Nichols pretty much backed out.
Wrong again.

1920 Sept. 16, New York City: TNT bomb planted in unattended horse-drawn wagon exploded on Wall Street opposite House of Morgan, killing 35 people and injuring hundreds more. Bolshevist or anarchist terrorists believed responsible, but crime never solved.

I think you guys who keep calling this amateurish because there wasn't a higher body count are way off base. Operationally, this was well planned out and executed. Two bombs went off within 10 seconds of each other in high traffic areas during a premier event and killed at least 3 and severely injured scores more. Despite high security, no one has been arrested (yet - I fully expect someone or some people will be caught).

I don't know if its a group or an individual, but this was very well thought out and planned.

I agree. This doesn't feel quite the same as the Olympic Park bomber.

You're right. This happened 100 years ago once, so the word "most" can't really apply.

N.S. to donate $50K to Boston children's hospital

Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter says the provincial government will give $50,000 to the Mass General Hospital for Children in response to the bombings at the Boston Marathon.
Dexter rose in the provincial legislature today to express his condolences after Monday's bombings killed three people and injured more than 170 others.
He said Nova Scotians share a special connection with the people of the city, particularly after Bostonians helped after the Halifax Explosion in 1917.
"When we were in need, Bostonians were there," said Dexter in a news release. "There is a border and hundreds of miles between us, but Massachusetts is always close to the hearts of Nova Scotians. We will do everything we can to support our neighbours and friends in their time of need. Boston's resilience and fighting spirit will persevere."
He also paid tribute to the volunteers and first responders who helped following the explosions.
Dexter said "We cannot allow ourselves to have our lives, the things that we participate in, the very nature of the communal relationships that are important to society damaged by those who would simply do evil."
All of the people from the Maritimes who ran the marathon are accounted for and are ok.

It all goes hand in hand. This isn't Iraq where some mastermind bomb maker is putting together bombs for kids to place or use as suicide bombers. The guy(s) who planned this, built the bomb. It was designed to do maximum damage and it did. The fact that it could have done more damage doesn't mean it is amateurish.

Flag at my place of work just got lowered to half staff. So incredibly sad - my stomach is still in knots from yesterday.

The flags at my university were already at half-mast (and every tree in the village wrapped with white ribbon): the diplomat who recently died in a bombing in Afghanistan - Anne Smedinghoff - is the daughter of one of our adjunct faculty members. Her funeral mass is tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.

There is a pretty graphic picture of her online. I feel for any of her family or friends that saw that.

Facebook post by Richard Clarke (former national director of counter-terrorism):

How they will investigate the Boston Bombing

While detectives and federal agents have started the laborious process of interviewing thousands of people in Boston, much of the work that is likely to be key to solving the Boston Bombing is technical and forensic.

First, the FBI will stitch together hundreds of hours of video camera recordings from private and public surveillance and traffic cameras, as well as recordings made by private citizens attending the race. They will look for when the bombs might have been left behind and then examine the faces of everyone who was in the area around that time. They will try to put names to those faces, using facial recognition matching software, drawing on drivers license, passport, and visa databases. In the case of the Mossad operation in Dubai, the police in the United Arab Emirates were able to recreate most of the the assassination operation by using snippets from dozens of surveillance cameras. For the FBI in Boston, a similar process has now begun.

Second, FBI and NSA will look at phone records. If the bombs were command detonated using mobile phones to trigger the blast, it may be possible to find out what phone numbers were used by seeing what numbers were called on that block or in that neighborhood at exactly the time of the blasts. The FBI will look at calls that went through specific cell towers in the Copley Square-Prudential Center neighborhood of Back Bay. There will be many innocent calls made at that time, but if some of the calls went to unregistered mobile numbers (an unregistered phone is a mobile device bought at a convenience store without providing a telephone company a user name, relying instead on pre-paid calling cards), those “burner phones” may have been the detonators.

The FBI will want to find out who bought the “burner phones” used to make the calls and to receive them. It may be possible to determine where the phones were sold and when. If they were sold at a convenience store like a CVS or 7-11, there may be store surveillance camera video of customers present when the phones were sold. An image of the buyer could then be made public in the hope that someone will come forward to identify the face.

NSA will also look for calls from the Boston area around the time of the blast to suspicious numbers in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen and other Middle East locations. If it were an Islamist attack (which is by no means certain), the bomber may have checked in with fellow terrorists before or after the strike. FBI will check chat rooms and blog posts on right wing American extremists groups to see if there is any sign that people in that sub-culture knew about the attack before it happened or have guesses about who may have done it.

Third, FBI (perhaps with help from ATF) will try to reassemble the bombs by gathering as many tiny fragments of material as possible., as they did in the case of the bombing of Pan Am 103 and Oklahoma City. Already they have informed guesses about the explosive material and the fragmentation material. They will collect fragments from the buildings, the temporary crowd control fence that lined Boylston Street and, regrettably, from the severed limbs of the victims. Next, the FBI will try to determine if a bomb design was used based upon a specific “how to make a bomb” web page on the Internet. Law enforcement authorities will try to determine where the bomb materials and the back pack or other carrying case were purchased.

Fourth, Homeland Security investigators will examine who flew out of Boston, especially to foreign locations, around the time of the bombing. In the 1993 World Trade Center attack and the CIA Headquarters-Route 123 shootings, attackers moved quickly to the airport to get out of the country.

Fifth, police and federal agents will contact all of their informants in Islamist cells and American Right Wing and Aryan Supremacist groups. They will offer rewards for leads, for suspicions. Unless the attack was done by a self-initiated loner (which is highly possible), the bomber or bombers will tell someone eventually of their involvement. Alternatively, as in the case of the Unibomber, a family member may call the police when they realize that their brother, husband, or son may have been involved.

In major investigations such as these, the case is usually solved either very quickly due to a lucky break or it takes months of painful detailed work. Sometimes, as in the Atlanta Olympic bombing and the TWA 800 crash, the investigation may go down a mistaken path for a time. However long it takes, these cases do get solved. For me, a Bostonian who grew up watching the end of so many Marathons, spent so many days hanging out in Copley Square, this attack feels personal. The eight year old boy who died was from the Dorchester neighborhood, “Dot”, where I lived when I was an eight year old boy. For that boy and the other victims, this case will be solved and the criminal terrorist will be apprehended.

Every specialist on the news has called it amateurish. Saying that the pressure cooker actually acts to diffuse the bomb a bit. Someone said earlier that most of the bomb exploded vertically instead of horizontally. The timer instead of the cell phone indicates it was less complex. Indications seem to be that you didn't have to be an expert on it to put it together which means the possible people who did this is much bigger and that people like you or I could have read about this technique on the internet or through a book. Unless an expert did this to look amateurish and purposely made it less lethal than possible.
