Explosions at Boston Marathon (1 Viewer)

Facebook post by Richard Clarke (former national director of counter-terrorism):

How they will investigate the Boston Bombing

While detectives and federal agents have started the laborious process of interviewing thousands of people in Boston, much of the work that is likely to be key to solving the Boston Bombing is technical and forensic.

First, the FBI will stitch together hundreds of hours of video camera recordings from private and public surveillance and traffic cameras, as well as recordings made by private citizens attending the race. They will look for when the bombs might have been left behind and then examine the faces of everyone who was in the area around that time. They will try to put names to those faces, using facial recognition matching software, drawing on drivers license, passport, and visa databases. In the case of the Mossad operation in Dubai, the police in the United Arab Emirates were able to recreate most of the the assassination operation by using snippets from dozens of surveillance cameras. For the FBI in Boston, a similar process has now begun.

Second, FBI and NSA will look at phone records. If the bombs were command detonated using mobile phones to trigger the blast, it may be possible to find out what phone numbers were used by seeing what numbers were called on that block or in that neighborhood at exactly the time of the blasts. The FBI will look at calls that went through specific cell towers in the Copley Square-Prudential Center neighborhood of Back Bay. There will be many innocent calls made at that time, but if some of the calls went to unregistered mobile numbers (an unregistered phone is a mobile device bought at a convenience store without providing a telephone company a user name, relying instead on pre-paid calling cards), those “burner phones” may have been the detonators.

The FBI will want to find out who bought the “burner phones” used to make the calls and to receive them. It may be possible to determine where the phones were sold and when. If they were sold at a convenience store like a CVS or 7-11, there may be store surveillance camera video of customers present when the phones were sold. An image of the buyer could then be made public in the hope that someone will come forward to identify the face.

NSA will also look for calls from the Boston area around the time of the blast to suspicious numbers in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen and other Middle East locations. If it were an Islamist attack (which is by no means certain), the bomber may have checked in with fellow terrorists before or after the strike. FBI will check chat rooms and blog posts on right wing American extremists groups to see if there is any sign that people in that sub-culture knew about the attack before it happened or have guesses about who may have done it.

Third, FBI (perhaps with help from ATF) will try to reassemble the bombs by gathering as many tiny fragments of material as possible., as they did in the case of the bombing of Pan Am 103 and Oklahoma City. Already they have informed guesses about the explosive material and the fragmentation material. They will collect fragments from the buildings, the temporary crowd control fence that lined Boylston Street and, regrettably, from the severed limbs of the victims. Next, the FBI will try to determine if a bomb design was used based upon a specific “how to make a bomb” web page on the Internet. Law enforcement authorities will try to determine where the bomb materials and the back pack or other carrying case were purchased.

Fourth, Homeland Security investigators will examine who flew out of Boston, especially to foreign locations, around the time of the bombing. In the 1993 World Trade Center attack and the CIA Headquarters-Route 123 shootings, attackers moved quickly to the airport to get out of the country.

Fifth, police and federal agents will contact all of their informants in Islamist cells and American Right Wing and Aryan Supremacist groups. They will offer rewards for leads, for suspicions. Unless the attack was done by a self-initiated loner (which is highly possible), the bomber or bombers will tell someone eventually of their involvement. Alternatively, as in the case of the Unibomber, a family member may call the police when they realize that their brother, husband, or son may have been involved.

In major investigations such as these, the case is usually solved either very quickly due to a lucky break or it takes months of painful detailed work. Sometimes, as in the Atlanta Olympic bombing and the TWA 800 crash, the investigation may go down a mistaken path for a time. However long it takes, these cases do get solved. For me, a Bostonian who grew up watching the end of so many Marathons, spent so many days hanging out in Copley Square, this attack feels personal. The eight year old boy who died was from the Dorchester neighborhood, “Dot”, where I lived when I was an eight year old boy. For that boy and the other victims, this case will be solved and the criminal terrorist will be apprehended.
Good stuff, Clarke knows things.

Friend from Boston posted a pic he took from the marathon about 40 mins before... http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=5tv3oz&s=6 .... Not sure what he thinks he took a pic of but he sent it to the hotline. Cropped/enhanced by him.
Does anyone else see what looks to be a human dummy laying on top of that trash can? You can see a head with sideburns just to the left of the street sign post.
There is also a black man wearing what might be a black hooded sweatshirt -- the description of an individual that the feds are looking for -- standing directly behind the dummy.ETA - He is also the only one in the picture not looking at the race.

Also story of two brothers who were both there and each lost part of their leg from the knee down. Said they are from Stoneham, so not sure if they were the guys people were talking about earlier.

Truly terrible stories.
The guy in the wheelchair we were talking about is not one of these dudes. Crazy that from a town of 20,000, three young men each lost limbs. :sadbanana:
Oh Jesus. Who are the 3? I know about Marc obviously.

By the way - crazy we have been on this board for 10 years plus and we just connected!
Hey Ref - not sure if you saw this or not. Posted on facebook

Got a call from Marc's mom, he is still in critical condition. He was due to go into surgery this morning to try and save his left leg and they had to cancel it because they found pieces of metal around his heart.
good lord.... im going to throw up.

Most acts of domestic terrorism are lone wolf-types. Eventhough McVeigh had Nichols, Nichols pretty much backed out.
Wrong again.

1920 Sept. 16, New York City: TNT bomb planted in unattended horse-drawn wagon exploded on Wall Street opposite House of Morgan, killing 35 people and injuring hundreds more. Bolshevist or anarchist terrorists believed responsible, but crime never solved.
You're right. This happened 100 years ago once, so the word "most" can't really apply.
A hundred years ago would make it 2020.

And as Jon said McVeigh had Nichols to help him prepare.

Twitter is saying that all American Airlines are being grounded nationwide? I don't think it's related to this but not sure.

EDIT: They are saying computer glitch. Very, very odd, but apparently not related to this.

It's crazy. The whole nation is worried sick. That's a good thing because you never know. Hopefully this is just another precaution.

A second victim in the Boston Marathon bombings has been identified: Krystle M. Campbell, a 29-year-old from Medford, Mass.

Her father, William A. Campbell Jr., told Yahoo News he's in shock that his daughter was killed.

"My daughter was the most lovable girl. She helped everybody, and I'm just so shocked right now. We're just devastated," he said. "She was a wonderful, wonderful girl. Always willing to lend a hand."

Campbell was at the finish line with a friend to cheer on her boyfriend, who was running the race. William Campbell said he doesn't know if her boyfriend finished the race before the bombs went off.

More than 170 people were wounded17 of them criticallyand three were killed in the attacks.

The other identified victim, 8-year-old Martin Richard, was running away from the first explosion with his family when the second blast killed him. His mother and 6-year-old sister were injured in the blast as well.
There is a pretty graphic picture of her online. I feel for any of her family or friends that saw that.
Was she already dead in the picture or just severely injured?

The city began the day after the Boston Marathon terror attacks on high alert.

The NYPD beefed up security, increased bag searches in the subways, patrolled houses of worship and deployed critical response vehicles to landmarks like the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center.

Regular New Yorkers did their part as well — NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in the past 24 hours, police received 77 reports of suspicious packages. As a comparison, the NYPD fielded just 21 reports from a similar time frame last year.

CNN had two of the male nurses working in the medical tent on late last night. One had Iraq experience, don't know specifically about the other - both had 20+ years in the field though. The non-Iraq guy said one of the first people he came to was a young woman who they tried to save but they ruled dead on the scene. He inferred they didn't rule the young boy or the other to be named victim dead at the scene, the woman - yes, though. So, I'm guessing yes she's dead in those pictures.

Okay, I just saw the picture I think you are talking about. Yeah if that was her, it definitely didn't look good.RIP

The second victim who was killed in the duel explosions lived a block away from my house.

Didn't know her personally but her family was super nice to everyone on our block. :/

Jeez, I just read they told the Campbell parent's their daughter was in surgery for hours. They misidentified the daughter's friend as their daughter. Finally, they told them they can go in and see her and they were shocked to see it wasn't their daughter. An hour later a police officer told them their daughter had died.

I believe that they identified her incorrectly because she had Krystle's ID on her person.

I say anyone else who mentions Obama, Bush, O'Reilly, Matthews, et al in this thread gets a DayBan. Mods, can I get a hallelujah?
Meh. People deal with things like this in their own way. These threads tend to become a contest to show who's most affected anyway. If you don't like a post just skip it and go on to the next one else you become an inadvertent entrant in the most affected contest. I know that last line is a a tad hypocritical but as long as they're not being an all-time Richard people should be able to say whatever they want here. :2cents:
Would all-time Richard == someone who wins a NCAA knockout-style tourney for dooshiness?

I think you guys who keep calling this amateurish because there wasn't a higher body count are way off base. Operationally, this was well planned out and executed. Two bombs went off within 10 seconds of each other in high traffic areas during a premier event and killed at least 3 and severely injured scores more. Despite high security, no one has been arrested (yet - I fully expect someone or some people will be caught). I don't know if its a group or an individual, but this was very well thought out and planned.
The bomb making is what they are calling amateurish, not the planning.
It all goes hand in hand. This isn't Iraq where some mastermind bomb maker is putting together bombs for kids to place or use as suicide bombers. The guy(s) who planned this, built the bomb. It was designed to do maximum damage and it did. The fact that it could have done more damage doesn't mean it is amateurish.
Every specialist on the news has called it amateurish. Saying that the pressure cooker actually acts to diffuse the bomb a bit. Someone said earlier that most of the bomb exploded vertically instead of horizontally. The timer instead of the cell phone indicates it was less complex. Indications seem to be that you didn't have to be an expert on it to put it together which means the possible people who did this is much bigger and that people like you or I could have read about this technique on the internet or through a book. Unless an expert did this to look amateurish and purposely made it less lethal than possible.
Maybe its semantics on my part.

I don't know... maybe the bomber traded damage for stability or portability or size. Or a timer for less of ability to track. Assuming there is a political motive the # of people killed being 3 or 10 or even 20 probably doesn't really matter.

Yeah, the picture of the young woman I saw depicted her laying there lifeless -- either dead or unconscious -- while the medics were checking her pulse. It did not look good from the picture.

That's ####### horrible. :(
...and I'm done for awhile.

Just getting a headache following this.

Taking a break from this coverage.

Has anyone mentioned what happened at Times Square? What happened there.

This sounds similar to me.

Only difference is no one got suspicious in advance from smoke or other external pointers.
That was a much larger bomb in a struck. Some station on TV showed an FBI staged explosion of a replica of the attempted Times Square bomb and it was much larger than what we saw in Boston.
Just heard on NPR that indeed a pressure cooker bomb was used in NYC Times Square 2010. The bomb was inside the van.

Similar pressure-cooker explosives have been used in Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan, according to a July 2010 intelligence report by the FBI and Homeland Security. Also, one of the three devices used in the May 2010 Times Square attempted bombing was a pressure cooker, the report said.

"Placed carefully, such devices provide little or no indication of an impending attack," the report said.

The Pakistani Taliban, which claimed responsibility for the 2010 attempt in Times Square, has denied any role in the Boston Marathon attack.

12 dead now?
CNN still showing 2. But injured now up to 132.
I don't know what the final number will be, but there's no way that only two people died where this many were injured, including a fair amount with severed limbs.

These pics are awful.
Agreed. There's one picture with two women laying (with partially amputated limbs) with an emergency personnel checking their pulse. This is pretty awful speculation, but sadly, at least one of those women appears to be dead from various pictures of her.

This is so tragic.
The woman in blue in the picture I was referring to here was identified as 29 year old Krystle Campbell who was killed yesterday. A few media outlets have since removed the picture from their galleries. I honestly wish I had not seen that image. I'll never forget it. RIP Krystle.

That the 2nd blast that was further from the finish?

First one seemed like the blast came from closer to the buildings and then the force of it is what caused the fence/barricade to buckle out onto the street and the older runner guy to hit the ground.

That segment seems pretty compelling. I think it is clear that the blast came from the runner's side of the fence based on the way that the fence collapsed, and that bag is placed just on the other side of the fence at what appears to be the epicenter of the blast.

Man, that's so sad. Having seen the pics, the only comfort I can take away is that she might have passed away quickly, hopefully instantly without suffering.

I have wondered if this attack could have been for the NYC marathon that was cancelled due to Sandy; that would have been a zoo if Bloomberg forced the issue and still had the race.

I would imagine if that ends up being the bag, it should be a little easier to track since they'll be tons of pictures on the front row.

So the big news in conspiracy land is that there is a family guy episode that "predicted" the whole thing.

I get a kick out of conspiracies. Just youtube family guy/boston marathon

Basically, Peter says he won the boston marathon by killing all the competitors. He was in his car and ran them all over.

Then at another spot in the episode, he sets off two bombs (on bridges I think) with cellphones (accidentally). The first explosion happens, then he makes a second explosion happen and then you hear people screaming.

crazy idea, take all the pics and video the fbi has and let 4chan have at it. I bet they'd come up with something first.
I agree. If they posted all the videos online for everyone to look at, I bet the "internet" would figure it out very quickly.

That's a pretty big bag. Would have to think there's another photo out there of someone either carrying it, leaving it or standing right there with a big backpack, etc. If that's it it's a huge break.

Channel 7 in Boston just had a pretty good pictorial on the news showing the first blast and someone running away with their clothes shredded as mostly everyone else is cowering. Probably ran in shock but you never know.

They don't have it up yet on their website http://www1.whdh.com/ but I'm sure it will be up soon. It is from just above the blast site and it seems like stills taken from a video that has benn turned in to FBI. No doubt they are going to find whoever did this on video.

Don't know if this was posted before, but:

Second Marathon victim IDed: Krystle Campbell

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/second-boston-marathon-victim-identified-krystle-campbell-174401374.html

Quote

CNN had two of the male nurses working in the medical tent on late last night. One had Iraq experience, don't know specifically about the other - both had 20+ years in the field though. The non-Iraq guy said one of the first people he came to was a young woman who they tried to save but they ruled dead on the scene. He inferred they didn't rule the young boy or the other to be named victim dead at the scene, the woman - yes, though. So, I'm guessing yes she's dead in those pictures.
She was alive in one of the pictures.
