Eye dr's, prescription only good for 1 year? (1 Viewer)

So had some left over flex spending dollars so thought I would go get another pair of overpriced glasses.  Go to the place that I got glasses from last May, had some frames picked out and wanted to get pricing.  They pull up my info and say can't do it because my last exam was 5/15/15.  Really, I'm trying to give you money but you won't take it because you say I need a new eye exam?  I thought it was always good for at least 2 years, and what is it going to hurt, you don't confiscate my old glasses after a year?  They asked if I wanted to make an appointment for an exam and told them no, was about to go all MOP but just walked away.  When I NEED glasses I'll be going somewhere else.

Pretty sure that's standard everywhere.  You're going to have to go buy your new specs out of the back of a white van if you don't want a new script.

They'll gladly take your money once you give them more money to get an exam first.

They just want your money for another exam. I've had years where my prescription hasn't changed. It's tough though with glasses because they have to fit them for you (versus just ordering contact lenses online).

I get my glasses online and just type in my prescription and measurements (think just distance between pupils iirc). Figured I could take then to a big box retailer to have adjusted if need be but they have always fit well enough for my taste.

When I bought online with Warby Parker they still needed a valid prescription.  My last script was only good for a year.

This issue is pushing me to consider LASIK.

I'll go ahead and pimp the site I use, because they're awesome, imo. Several months ago, I got 3 pairs (1 with some of the upgraded new-fangled lens crap, 1 bare bottom no features for back-up and 1 prescription sunglasses) for around $80. I actually screwed up on the order and selected clear/no prescription on the fancy lens pair. Sent one email and they replied with a shipping label to use and replaced the lenses with prescription ones at no charge. Didn't even have to have to speak to a single human.

Eye exams are a bull#### money grab.  Just go down to Walgreens and start trying on the reading glasses off the rack until you find a pair that work.

That sucks.  In Kentucky an eyeglass prescription is generally good for 2 years.  Contact lenses for 1.  Not sure how it works in your state but maybe you could ask the doctor about backdating the Rx expiration to 5/15/17 if you're still happy with it.  Edit: where you from yak?

I've got my annual eye exam next week. I like all the tests, even the shock-poof of air in the eyeball. Small price to pay for a clean bill of eye-health.

They are your doctor records, ask for them and take them to someone who will make you a pair.

I get an eye exam every year because it's free. Prescription changed just one grade and doctor suggested to just use the same as last year when I went to get a pair of sunglasses.

Always  surprised at people who take what ever DRs tell them. They work for you folks, not the other way around.

True but you still can't buy contacts with a prescription greater than 1 year.

Optometrist or ophthalmologist?  Rxs for glasses are generally 2 yrs but ophthalmologists generally don't care and do 1.
