Bills | Whitner likely to startTue, 22 Aug 2006 07:16:39 -0700Rodney McKissic, of the Buffalo News, reports Buffalo Bills SS Donte Whitner appears set to be a starter, as current starting SS Matt Bowen (leg) continues to suffer from a bone bruise in his lower right leg. "We drafted Donte high and we anticipate that he's going to start," said head coach #### Jauron. "He's more advanced than he was a week ago and he's a studier. He likes it, and he works at it all the time."Huff is starting as well when he returns from injury but Pollard, I doubt starts week 1Tom

EOTG returns the week leading up to the first week of the regular season.

We'll be publishing another Pre-Season Roundtable later this week and Bob Henry's latest camp update (which includes defensive players) will be up weekly until the season begins.

I'll let the guru know you're looking for him. In the meantime...

Whitner got the break he needed when Matt Bowen got dinged in camp. As FFChamp said, he's the guy now. He'll probably start a little slowly, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was putting up top 20 numbers (or better depending on how bad the Bills become) during the second half of the season. Huff will start at SS and will probably follow the same rookie stat path as Whitner. He's got an ankle injury, though, but it's supposedly minor. He looked better last week before the injury -- more active and with a pick. Jury's still out on the rooks vs vets in Kansas City. This week, Jarrad Page has been the hot number, before that it was Pollard. Herm Edwards isn't afraid to start rookies when they're better than the incumbents but Sammy Knight (and Greg Wesley) aren't Reggie Tongue and Jerome Woods. It would still be a little more than a mild surprise to me if either rookie was the week one starter.

I usually don't do an update before week 1. That said, with all the movement and news over the past couple of weeks, I have been working on one that I expect to have done before the weekend. Not sure how soon it will get posted but I'll do my best to get it to the editors in time to get up by Friday. Reb

Reb.........My draft is Saturday - I may have to call you if you don't get it done! LOL

Great stuff.

Are we to assume that the teams not included have no changes? Or are those going to be covered in a different article?

(FWIW, I'm mostly interested in Thomas Howard)
