Fair way to pick Draft order? (2 Viewers)

Hey,

Normally we pick our draft order out of a hat on the night of the draft. I hate it because I'd like to focus my research on players I know I can get. If I'm picking 9th, I don't have to spend any time over whether I should pick Shaun Alexander or LaDanain Tomlinson.

I would like to pick our order in advance, but since many of us live in different cities, and since my owners are a bunch of suspicious bastards, nobody will trust the results unless everyone is there.

Here's my question: Can anyone think of a completely fair way to select our draft order in advace so that nobody can question the results? I was thinking about maybe using the results of some future horse race to determine the order (I would assign each team a horse number and how they finished would be the draft order). Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a race that I can guarantee has 10 horses finish... and none are scratched.

Any ideas out there?

Ask everyone to say the amount the Dow Jones Index will close out on the friday prior to the weekend of the draft... When everyone has silently given the number... show it to everyone... and make it, closer (up or down) get the fist pick... second closest to the actual amount, second pick... etc...

Unless you have a Wall Street trader in your league... it's an educated guess... and it adds some fun because you only know your draft slot at 4pm on the friday prior to your draft (on that night or on saturday)...

Our commish randomly assigned numbers 1 to 12 to a month of the year. Each player selected a month (first come, first serve) until the last one was automatically assigned to the commish.

Based on your month/number, you then selected your draft position.

I say like others here ROLL THEM BONES is the fairest... http://www.irony.com/mailroll.html

Can be set alot of different ways..also commish and person who rolled gets the email results..believe all in league can too..can't recall been years since used this..the old KFFL LEAGUES...yes around the time FF was born online with Prodigy.com..AOL not started up yet then (ALWAYS OFF LINE)! :D

This website will do a random draft drawing for you and email it to all the owners at the same time, if you choose to do so.

That's actually quite slick and pretty much what I'm looking for. I suspect there might still be some suspicions, but that may do the trick.I'd still be interested in hearing any ideas for using future-date kinda stuff... the stock market thing was pretty good. The month/number thing wouldn't work, because there would still be a single person who knows the numbers.

We pick cards. The person who gets the Ace gets the first option where he wants to draft. Instead of drafting first, he might want the third pick instead because there is someone he is eyeing in the second round. You can do this with the dice options above. Puts a great spin on the draft.

I've done this in one league as well. I'm a huge fan of it

I like the "choice" part of that... but my problem is the picking in advance of the draft. Many of us live in different cities and travel to the draft location. I would like to be able to remotely pick draft order, but in a fair and unquestioned way.

I was in the same position as you with guys not being around. Everyone trusts me (commish for 4 years) but I didnt want anyone to question anything. What I did is video tape the draft lottery (I picked names out of a cookie jar) and then emailed it to everyone. I made sure the TV was on in the backround so no one could say that I doctored the tape (the Yankee game was on so it was perfect) and I made sure evertone saw their names being put in the jar and then I made sure that everyone saw that their were no names left at the end of the lottery. This way worked well so no one can question anything.

Of course this is only contingent on you having a digital camera and the software to upload it onto your computer

That's quite a good idea, actually. I have the camera and computer ability to do this. However, your method to ensure propriety (the TV on) isn't really foolproof. I have a TiVo and theorhetically I could keep retaping that lottery until my name came up first... rewinding the TiVo to the same point in the game every time. But, still... I like the concept.

The Dice Server is a great way to pick randomly. I usually take all 12 teams in our league and oranize them by last name of the coach in alphabetical order. That is their roll #. Then you tee up the dice server to roll one 1000 sided die 12 times. Lowest # get pick one and highest gets pick 12 or visa versa. You can cc everyone in your league the results so you all get them at the same time and no one screams collusion. Although I have been having a little trouble with the cc feature. It doesn't like some e-mails or something or maybe there is a cap on how many e-mail you can put in. In years past I usually put all 12 e-mails on it and it's fine. I've found that just seperating the emails with a space works. But as long as you can send it to a few eye wittnesses that can vouch for the authentication that's all you need.Flip the switch and it spits out 12 random #'s that you just sort out from least to greatest and match up to each coach's roll #. Do a test to yourself first if you want, it's very simple and quick.

We have a ten team league. We set up a wrestling ring in the backyard and have a 10 man over the top battle royal. First guy over the ropes picks 10th,next guy 9th,etc,last man in the ring picks #1. Try it,it's a lot of fun, especially after a brew or two. Anyone who intentionaly goes over the top to try to "pick" his spot gets thrown back in,only he has to come back in a thong. Not real pretty, but hysterical.

Good system. Also important that a person is DQed only after going over the top rope. I'd also recommend using the number of tequila shots each owner can drink the night before a draft as a measuring stick.

This system worked very well back in July!

The initial plan is to catch 12 turtles at the cottage, list all 12 participants in the league on a piece of paper in no particular order, tape a number from 1-12 on each turtles back, place them in a rocked off section of the beach in a perfect line and then let them go for 1/2 an hour. After 30 minutes, we will stand behind the rocked off area and read the numbers off their backs from left to right as seen looking out at the water. The farthest left will be the number assigned to the guy whose name is at the top of the list and so on reading numbers from left to right and writing names from top to bottom.

Once numbers have been assigned, we will place the turtles back in the rocked off area and turn them loose a second time for 30 minutes. The same rules apply. The turtle on the farthest left will represent the #1 pick in the draft. 2nd from the left is the 2nd overall pick and so on. Ties will be determined by shell position (whichever turtle has the slightest piece of shell that is farther left at the buzzer with a majority rules decision). We will fold the pieces of paper on the turtles' backs so that it is not readily understandable who the winning turtle actually is and that will allow us to count back from 12 to 1 to keep "The Decision of the Turtles" a secret until the very last two #'s are opened.

Use a role playing/gaming site. They have virtual dice rolls.

Some even allow the results to be sent out to all owners immediatley.

Have one owner list everyone 1 -10.

Then have the dice site roll a 10 sided dice like 5 times.

That is one total. Repeat that 10 times.

Then match up the owners names with the dice roll totals.

The name with the highest dice roll total picks first and so on.

We have owners in Dallas and 2 in Tulsa and one even in NY.

Since everyone gets the information at once, no conspiracy.
